Can I get a quick rundown on the final floor of Sil? Should I kill Morgoth, or just run?
>>

You probably can't kill him with this. You didnt find a better weapon? Take your sil and gtfo imo

killing morgy is the challenge option
the easy/standard way is to just knock his hat off, steal one silmaril, and GTFO

Too bad, that was actually a good thread.
Here, have this.

I know one of you nagas edited it, because you talk about how dcss got worse and worse with every new installment and specifically say "roguelite" when talking about FTL and nuclear throne and stuff even if the title says "action roguelike".

Coincidentally, /tg/ is also one of the most normalfag and reddit-ridden boards on 4chan, which is really ironic due to its supposed status of "le /d/ lite", and largely due to 1d4chan acting as a gateway the same way ED once did before it died, but this time only for /tg/ exclusively.

Maybe, I mean the guys that deal extreme amounts of damage and stick up close to you so you can't run away from their attacks. Also the ones that attack your spirit and kill you in 2 hits while inflicting terror.

Also is it just me or when you play anything that isn't Occultist, are most of the scrolls completely useless or what? I get Darkbolt, Azathoth's Wrath, Mayhem, Paralyze, Fear, Teleport, Opening, Pestilence, Summon Creature and Light; but alongside those there are like 5 billion more types of scrolls that never do anything.

Snakes appearing out of thin air (and spitting at you in the same turn) also tends to happen at the worst moment, not a fan of that either.

>>182236616
IA lets you turn invisible and detect invisible creatures via potions... if you can get those instead of useless junk like Confusion or Blindness (I think there's no need to bother with chucking potions at single targets when you always get attacked by huge groups, and you have dynamites or molotovs).

DCSS is so fucking stupid/
I have MR+++ and STILL got abyss'd. This is the second good character in a row that I've lost because retards thought randomly sending characters to a difficult place with literal random exits was a good idea.
I thought MR was supposed to make you resist getting banished but I guess not.
>>
>>182260729
You can examine monsters to see what their chance of banishing you is.
If it's higher than 5%, you should fight them as if they can banish you on any given turn.

>>
>>182262354
>ogres are bad with their signature weapons
I'm going to keep saying it until you dumb mibes get it through your thick skulls.
Ogres take less experience to get a giant club to mindelay than merfolks take to get a bardiche to mindelay. With the higher base damage of the GC, and Og's better Strength and Fighting apt, the ogre is going to mitigate the difference between the skill bonus to damage/accuracy and the reaching bonus.

Say it with me now:
Ogres take less experience to get a giant club to mindelay than merfolks take to get a bardiche to mindelay.
>>
>>182261507
There are only a handful of things that can abyss you pre-rune, and half of them are distortion weapons that ignore MR.
I think Erolcha and Louise are the only uniques with banishment spell, and ogre mages, spooky deep elves, and some wizards will have it. Psyche and Sonja are the only uniques with a high chance of having a ditortionnweapon, but both of them are nullified by a wand of paralysis/confusion.

All dangerous monsters pre-lair can't wield weapons anyways, and the ones that can are weak as fuck or have shit MR.

All in all, if you get abyss'd it is almost certainly your fault.
>>
>>182262116

plus it can have +9 enchantment, which is also multiplied by the brand. and you can get much better brands than vorpal

highly differentiated, individually interesting combat options (fuck 1-10 vs 2-9 damage type shit)

I dunno, his position seems alright to me, but I might be less autistic than the average /rlg/ regular.

Coolthulhu & mugling are basically saying "it used to work fine, let's just put it back the way it was and worry about fixing it 'right' later"

Kevin's position seems to be "It wasn't fine the way it was, it threw out half the details we've put into all these weapons and it worked in a stupid, limited way."
Also I can really understand the urge to fix it the right way, rather than just do a temporary fix and leave the correct one for the indefinite future. The project's history shows that half-assed temporary fixes tend to stick around for years and cause problems. That's basically what's holding up Z levels, after all.

So both sides have merit, IMO.

This is exactly what the close PR does - he didn't even need to write anything, just press "merge".
>he decided to special-case everything
As if.
He didn't special-case anything, just said that anyone who wants to fix it will have to special case things.

Kevin doesn't exactly contribute any real code to CDDA anymore.
Last change that he wrote was when he reverted mugling's ranged combat changes - the one thing that mugling did do really fucking well. Ironically, he likes mugling's fuckups and prevented anyone from fixing those.

The problem with this thinking is that the temporary fix really is better than the status quo. If we're going to use an inferior system in order to make it as painful as possible that some mystery developer will come over and do a real solution, why not just make it so that guns always miss? That'll make the game unfun, right?

This sort of philosophy does not lead to a healthy development community. Do you want to write 500 lines of perfect trajectory code that will amount to nothing if you fail to perform the pull ritual correctly, which apparently depends on Kevin's mood? I don't.
>>
>>182266642

stepped out, only one non-sleeping enemy.

>>
>>182270314
The problem is, Kevin's "fix" does not actually account for any of that. It only adds them in a different way, with terrible results.

>That's basically what's holding up Z levels, after all.
No, what is holding Z levels is lack of good 3D vision algorithm.
It does not depend on the "right thing", because vision is calculated on caches anyway.

Don't forget that he did reverted mugling's gear thing for vehicles.
And mugling disappeared after Kevin came back from having a kid.

Out of all the people with merge perms, no one has done anything that affected directly the game.
And the only stuff that Kevin has done in the past few months are the travis CI and covers support. With some tidbits regarding libraries and generally maintenance type of stuff.

At this point, if you want to contribute changes to already existing code that works bad for any reason, you first need to make sure Kevin hasn't state any guidelines for it. Which aren't recorded in any place but random posts spread around the project.

Also you have to remember that this isn't a democracy.

>Don't forget that he did reverted mugling's gear thing for vehicles.
The gear thing was actually pretty badly done in multiple ways. Though Kevin did not care about the actually bad things here, only that it broke multiple engine vehicles.
Vitamin system and jacks and cranes are pretty much all bad. Kevin defends them by setting arbitrarily high standards for anything that would make player's life easier.

>Out of all the people with merge perms, no one has done anything that affected directly the game.
It's supposed to be in a feature freeze until 0.D stable. Some people are actually fixing things to get it closer to release, Kevin is just shooting down QoL and reverting massive improvements to aiming.
>>
>>182272730
>Vitamin system and jacks and cranes

I kinda like these, especially the vitamin system. It means I have a reason to use all these different food types in mid-to-late game, and vitamins in early game, instead of just "oatmeal and water all day erryday" like I could before.
>>
>>182272730
>It's supposed to be in a feature freeze until 0.D stable.

The feature freeze is recent, I meant in the past 3-4 months.

And I guess what I want to say is that out of the people with merge perms, Cool is the only one that has actually worked in fixing stuff that directly affects the players. That tells you how motivated the "core" devs of CDDA are.

There isn't much, but it's fun before you run out of things to do.
>Is there any interesting content after the first days?
At some point, all zombies start evolving into giga niggas and you have to actually rethink your "build".
>>
>>182287072

Most people either build a deathmobile and roll across the countryside, or set up a base and start bringing NPCs to help build it up.
>>
>>182287072
The first year or so can be pretty interesting as you build up a deathmobile with everything you need and quickly become an unstoppable killing machine. But after that every character feels kinda samey. I haven't been able to bring myself to play it in almost 6 months and with some of the changes I've been seeing recently it doesn't seem likely I will again any time soon.

Notice how many successful Python roguelikes there are that are based on that tutorial (not many).

The Python 2 part is actually not the problem. Do anything with Python and you'll realize that even though 3 is better, your project depends on some library written by someone else in Python 2. The issue is that the tutorial-writer is pushing a component-based architecture that is too counterintuitive for newbies.

>By using Unity spice to spice the food in your restaurant, you acknowledge and accept the policy that: (a) If the spice contains tracking bugs, that's perfectly fine and you won't complain, (b) Anyone who eats food spiced with the Unity spice also agrees to have ads displayed through whatever means necessary
>>
>>182307979
Instead of going straight to metaphor, maybe you should take the time to understand that usage statistics means stuff like "how many times per week does he run the program", not anything that hurts you to have Unity know about.
>>
>>182308932

Yeah, that's clause a, but you know what "analytics and advertising services" means, right? Adware/spyware/tracking.
>>
>>182308932
"Aggregated usage statistics" could well mean all your system data and anything only vaguely related to the software in question.
PROTIP: If it doesn't state the limits strictly and exactly, it allows (((them))) to do anything

HP is replaced by morale. If you hate /rlg/ too much, you stop browsing and "die".

Attacks are all spells, like in ToME.
Names of attacks are related to shitposts.
Every shitposter specializes in a limited set of shitposts, so this is kinda like a spellbook/ability set.

Instead of hunger clock, you are forced to attack or be attacked once in a while to ensure /rlg/ stays bumped.

I've been playing a ton of dynahack and the worst issue is typically food. Who the fuck thought this was a good mechanic?

From what I read from the wiki, food starts to be plentiful once I reach Sokoban/Minetown but I always get food troubles before. So, do I just dive to Sokoban/Minetown or is it worth clearing out the levels at the start?

Even corpses and food besides rations barely give me any nutrition.

The point of butterflies isn't to distract enemies, it's to act as a line-of-fire/movement blocker.

Ogre mage with banish comes around the corner and you have 0 MR? Get some butterflies to stand between you and him and he can't cast spells on you anymore.

Running away from an enemy in a corridor? Summon butterflies behind you and swap places with them. Now you're not in melee range anymore, letting you abuse overpowered scumbloat like the < key.

It's a kitchen sink apocalypse, it's just zombies are the front-facing threat because they've got most of the best loot and have wandering hordes on the overmap right now.

Throwing in everything you can think of doesn't make something less generic.
Infra Arcana's creature variety can be evoked here. It has beings taken straight out of Lovecraft, stuff lifted from Blood, stuff derived from Lovecraft, some pop culture references and generic enemies. It works more or less perfectly, simply because of how well they blend into the theme. Cataclysm on the other hand has the generic zombie apocalypse theme in the first place. How and why Shoggoths fit into this (and how is everybody not dead with wild Shoggoths running around)? Why did the Amigara Fault appear? What do Chuds have to do with anything? And so on.
It's just meaningless, directionless bloat that nevertheless has a good reason for existing: the game lives on such accumulation of junk. It wouldn't be worth spending more than 5 minutes on otherwise (still isn't if you ask me, but different strokes etc.)

>>

yeah you maybe have petrify which is not as good as it has a delay
also Leda's Liquefaction which can be good to slow enemies rushing you down, but thats about it

If you want utility maybe enchanter is what you want? You confuse or paralyze them and use a short blade or dagger weapon which gets bonuses if you attack disabled monsters.

Otherwise Ice Magic, they have different disabling spells (one for mr enemies and one for rc enemies) and can buff themselves.

>Adding defenses, disabling monsters etc. What would be better for that?
Petrify works fine for gargoyle.

In a broader sense I'd recommend checking out Translocations, Necromancy, Hexes, Ice Magic, and Transmutations.

In practice people usually pick whichever small set of spells are convenient in that particular game. If your idea is to be a fighter who learns a handful of support spells, I'd usually go with Blink, Regeneration, Beckoning, Passage of Golubria, Passwall, LRD, Gell's Gravitas, Apportation, Sticks to Snakes, Summon Butterflies, Mephitic Cloud, Summon Lightning Spire/Ice Beasts, and on the higher investment side of things maybe something like Statue Form, Simulacrum, Death Channel, or Invisibility.

Hexes are good too but rather dependent on your spellpower keeping up with monster MR.

This. I can also use ttyrec to record a play session and play it back later, to show it to a friend, or to analyze where I fucked up. Used to do that a lot with nethack.
>>
>>182420470
Maybe because I haven't played a Roguelike like that, but what is the appeal of that? I assume you get a registration and can compete with others on the high-scores table? Maybe I'm just living in the past century, but isn't it a hassle to be only able to play while online? What if the server goes down or your connection break and you lose your progress?

And aren't console roguelikes slower than graphical ones? I mean clearing the screen and rewriting the whole string.

I'm experimenting with a character based one in HTML5 and Javascript, but I'm unsure if a browser roguelike is a turn off for some people or not. I personally just find this approach interesting.

Generally, no. Not on any decent console or terminal. The linux text console is crazy fast, and most of the X terminals are at least respectable.
>>
>>182421359
>Who said "only?"
Well, I assumed that if we talk about SSH, that means you have to be connected to a remote host.

>The linux text console is crazy fast
Well, that's something I can confirm.

This idea sounds fun, by the way. You only have to develop for your server, basically, and anyone could play through any kind of SSH client.
>>
>>182421808

Thing is, if it can display on a text mode console, you can shunt it straight through SSH without any further coding. Adding a few network-aware features (like maybe a "force save" feature for when SSH loses the connection) can be nice, but isn't absolutely required.

You wouldn't have to worry about crushing loneliness if you were an elf/magical cat/orc/necromancer.
Everyone wants to pet a magical cat and rape an elf, orcs always band up, necromancers can make slave waifus and husbandos.

So it's not unrealistic for roguelikes not to need to handle that.

I actually like wounds being a death spiral, if the player is otherwise given some ability to avoid dying. Dwarf Fortress is a bit too brutal, with the arrows to the brain being instant death and half the attacks severing nerves leaving you a permanent cripple, but I think the system in Liberal Crime Squad is okay. All your limbs have separate damage pools, there's status effects for organ damage and lost limbs, and rudimentary shock mechanics for characters with a lot of damage.

It balances things by not being a roguelike. You have more than one character, with the ability to recruit more, and even if your leader dies someone else can take over if they're high enough level. And the combat portion of the game is reduced to short raids, with time to rest and recuperate and steal a wheelchair inbetween.

Anyone can see the difference between a real roguelike and a roguelite.
There is no need for discussion or grabbing examples from things that happened thirty years ago.
No matter what you say people will always want to be contrarians.
We had an official group of people deciding what a roguelike "is", for crying out loud. And people then nitpicked at it trying to find flaws.

You know what roguelikes are.
Play them.

it's extremely rare for non-glowing items in dcss to be cursed, to the point where you can just ignore the chance of it happening unless you're going for a 40-win-streak or something

it's such an unlikely and irrelevant thing; they should either massively increase the chance or remove it
>>
>>182471269
yeah man. unless the item specifically says "uncursed __", then it *might* be cursed. The chances probably increase (well "increase" in a monty hall kind of way) if a monster was previously wielding the weapon.

>>182471463
Without even really delving into the small tactical/strategic errors you might have made, the key thing with Zot:5 is to take it slowly as fuck. Like, really REALLY slowly.

The usual method is to find/create a choke point outside the big vault, and then shout-'n-lure enemies out of the lungs and into your chokepoint again and again. If you do that, then you shouldn't find yourself getting overwhelmed.

>>
>>182451802
>prey felt like all those other (modern) games before it
Except most of all those fucking suck, including the stuff the devs themselves did before (like Dishonored).
I understand his arguments but his premise that going "beyond" the "constraints" of a genre is necessarily good is a little stupid. Just because Thief -one of the best games ever made- managed to do it so well doesn't mean that most attempts will end up successful. Specifically regarding roguelikes, we can probably all agree that there are tons of well-crafted roguelikes that have a familiar feeling, but never feel the same as each other. Being able to do that is both much more difficult and much better than making a mediocre game like Strafe.
Separating roguelikes from roguelites is perfectly justified. If there was a game played in the first person that had you fight enemies and get items, but do so without positioning and weapon use, nobody in their right minds would call it an FPS and people who would compare it to fast shooters like Doom and Quake would not be taken seriously, for good reason. The same goes for every guy who uses permadeath and randomization as a cheap and easy way of implementing challenge in a game that would otherwise be extremely easy, and then wants to call it a "roguelike".

As a Tm I have no idea when I should be training what i'm d5 and this is what I have so far. I have just enough transmutation skill to cast iceform at 26%. I havent had enough time to train any fighting dodging or unarmed.

I figure I should train fighting and unarmed pretty quickly, but when should I train dodging? I feel like I'd need it for lair, but on the same accord don't have enough time to get my unarmed up even close to the level it needs to be by lair.
>>
>>182486402
I typically just don't bother with any transmutations besides StS and just train UC and then fighting/dodging. And then I would get blade hands once I feel comfortable with my offence.

Unless you're an octopode, ice form is not at all essential.

>Doing vaults

Really upset that my drops were terrible, didn't even get see invisibility until vaults, never got resist electricity, had to juggle resist poison with ring of slaying and ring of protection ( which I needed because even alligators were wrecking my shit )

So when are you supposed to do vaults? Because it seems like if you get locked from going back up the stairs you're dead unless you get lucky with teleports.
>>
>>182487116
usually I get spider form, then ice form and completely bypass StS should I probably be doing it the other way around?
>>
>>182487671
>>182487116
Oh and I'm a Dr I just figured iceform would be nice for the poison in lair. And having only bladehands in lair would fuck me over with hydras
>>
>>182487671
StS is one of the most broken early-game spells. It will destroy any enemy for you, and if you quaff a brilliance potion, you can spawn a billion moccasins and obliterate any tough enemy that you shouldn't engage with.(e.g. Erolcha,Rupert)

You can do fine with just plain UC + StS until you get blade hands. Hydra's should die to normal punches and snakes, but I would most likely pick Okawaru and hero/finesse everytime just to be safe since Dr gets no GDR, or just lure them up a level since they move at 1.0 speed.

here's a morgue of a similar character that used transmutations, I was using plain UC until lair branches.

The V:5 plan is:
-read magic map turn 1

-look around for good quadrants to fight in with the capital-X key

-if there's no suitable ones where you can't funnel enemies, fight in the outer corridors

-use a blink scroll to get out of the enemy surround to get to your preferred fighting area.

REMEMBER: ALL ENEMIES CONVERGE ONTO THE MIDDLE STAIRS, DO NOT FIGHT IN THE MIDDLE
>>
>>182488150
okay thank you, i've been doing it wrong the whole time.

What about poison tho? What if I dont get lucky with pots (I didn't last game I had 2 cure potions by d7

Okay so my mistake was my character not having enough endurance to withstand enemies even whilst funneling
Makes sense, I had almost no evasion and only around 30 AC
Ended up wasting my healing pots getting kited by stuff when I was running away

At least it wasn't the abyss.
>>
>>182488751
Poison is honestly not that big an issue at that stage in the game, even if you have a small amount of curing. I haven't ever been full-HP poisoned in lair in a long time.

Just remember that spiny frogs and mamba's have crap MR so any wand of paralysis/confusion should make them useless. Also, snakes can probably soak up hits for you.
>>
>>182489234
The idea is to initially go into a quiet area, kill the enemies there and lure other enemies to that cleared area.

The hardest part is establishing that space, and I can sympathise tbqh, V:5 can quickly overwhelm you. Have you tried worshipping Makhleb? His heal-on-kills should make V:5 a breeze.

Bucklers only need 4 skill to negate any spellcasting penalties, so I just put some points into shield once I had my main offence online.

blade hands melds shields though, so it may not be worth it until you find statue form. Dragon form is also pretty viable and strong but the defence it offers is just shite for fighting crowds.

With Tm (specifically DrTm), the "rhythm" I developed was:

0) Train UC at the beginning of the game until your desired spell is learnable (Sticks to Snakes is safer overall, but you might consider the offensive power of Spider Form, too).
1) Get the desired spell safely castable (i.e. white instead of yellow/red) -- in general, invest more in Transmutation than whatever other spell school you might need
2) Train UC (again) the second the spell is castable
3) Once you're doing decent damage with the form, train Fighting/Dodging
4) Train Transmutations to get success rate even lower (below 10% for Spider form; maybe lower for Ice Form, Blade Hands, etc.)
5) Optional: train some Spellcasting if you want/need more spell levels. Unless you're miscasting the form up the wazoo, you probably won't need the extra MP; the slight boost to casting success is also not needed.
6) Repeat from #1 if another form can be learned; otherwise, go to #2 and go down

Most importantly, Sticks to Snakes makes pre-Lair a LOT safer than you'd expect. Learn to rely on it, especially when your forms and your offense aren't as strong as the danger you're facing.

You talk about that like it came out years ago.
>>
>>182525141
It's probably a joke about those retards who jump on a new shitty indie platformer every second week.

im pretty sure anime IS a roguelike, so i'm just coming here to recommend that you all watch Tsurezure Children this season

ok thanks
>>
>>182526138
That's not even the anime which is most like a roguelike this season.
I am of course, referring to Made In Abyss, which is literally angband.
>>
Fapping to futa is roguelike
Doing a no-vagina futa fap run right now
>>
>>182526226
andband doesnt have robots though
was the android race added in PosChengband, Chengband, Hengband, or Zangband?
>>
>>182526274
fapping to bogdanoffs is true roguelike futa and anime fapping is roguelite gay shit
>>
>>182526353
Angband does have the borg though.
>>
>>182525247
You say that like we are not playing a quite populated, indie fueled, niche genre.
>>
You guys should check out Rogue, it's the roguelike of roguelikes
>>
>>182527714
Actually I say it like we are not playing a genre where a new game which costs money comes out every week.

Not in DynaHack. In fact it's not even guaranteed in vanilla.

Zin's war room, no fighting allowed.
>>
>>182507428

Looks like an okay game but DF did it first.

Anyone have a favorite roguelike dev?

I'm too triggered to play DCSS anymore. I visited the tavern and the sheer autism there left a very sick taste in my mouth. The game just isn't fun anymore.

A dishonourable polytheist you shall make.
>>
>>182537847
Mind to elaborate? I'm new here and haven't played DCSS before, but I'm curious.
>>
>>182540079
DCSS is notorious in this thread for having retarded developers who are constantly removing things that players like and making retarded decisions in general.
>>
>>182540079
>I haven't played DCSS before

Let it stay that way.

Shh! In my defense I actually started out with Zin before switching to team TSO.

Also, check out this sweet luck.

Also they're SJW commie goons who sperg over everything. Disagree with a tiny little thing and somehow thats a feminist political issue. They're literally insane desu.

I've gotten over it though and I'm playing again, those forums are really something crazy though.

He will not follow me upstairs, will he? I'm wondering if evoking feet is the right choice or reading a scroll of teleport during the turn he's confused.
