Netcode implementation is not the problem. knet/raknet exist.
A modern remake in 3D would be good: a lot of the mechanics are obviously geared toward a 1st person or close-3rd person view, not far-3rd person as in byond where you can see someone coming out of a locker 100 meters behind you.

Atmos is NOT what makes ss13 good, autism potential is. It can come in other forms such as robotics/AI as an extension of tcomm scripts, for example. Likewise, it's perfectly viable to have very lame atmos in exchange.

Most of the problems come from the scripting language, really, with a good amount of additional problems being a consequence of server-only code in byond as well as severe restrictions on how UI and gameplay in general is allowed to work. These are the areas that would automatically, for free, be fixed by a remake.

Thus the real problem is simply content.

The only part of atmos that actually matters is airflow and bombmaking. It's not like anyone uses the other atmos capabilities as antag for anything but BLASMAFLOOD :DDDD after all. Even the meager atmos setup people do as atmostech are overkill almost always. This further shows why atmos is not truly relevant, but the reason why I mention it is that many remakes focused on recreating the atmos first before any gameplay was even available. The point is that airflow and bombmaking shouldn't be the first priority for implementation, and additionally don't need to follow real-life processes if it's more useful, gameplay-wise, to do it differently. In the first place with the zas preset on /vg/, for instance, you might as well have a single toggle "there is a gasmix" vs "there is no air" since it spreads so fast between boundaries. This is one illustration.
