> what are some weird scenarios?

Defending yourself while taking a shit.

It was common to hide in drop toilets with spears or swords in the middle ages, wait for someone to sit down and then just stab them in the scrotum.

People were also at their least guarded when going to the toilet, so it was a good time to attack. Generally, eating, sleeping, fucking or shitting was the best time to attack someone because they were either hungry, tired, aroused or preoccupied.

So taking your weapons to the toilet and being able to move at a moments notice is important. For example, taking off your pants when taking a shit. That way if you get jumped, you don't need to worry about your legs getting tangled up.

Toilets, especially public toilets are popular places to attack people. In a modern context, staying on your guard and using the toilet intelligently will help you win a combat encounter in the shitter.

Urinals for example, great way to attack or get attacked. Stomp kick someone into the urinal is an easy set-up for a beating. I never use urinals for that reason, its way to easy to move up on you and take advantage.

There are so many others, might be fun to make an assassin game where you kill people in weird ways...

-Dicking around with proc gen
-Gore bouncing around now makes more gore.
-Enemies can now attack and there's a neat system for animations
-Experimenting with lighting
-New movement and camera

Also experimenting with GPU instancing which so far has yielded an actual loss of performance. Mh.

So I hate being an annoying fuck about godot but is there any reason to learn it if I am primarily using UE4 for blueprints and shit? I get godot is better for 2d and UE4 is better for 3d but it's not like godot is going to have an easier drag and drop system or something right?

Ghost Knight Victis

Some ideas for the rapier. Thrusting weapons like rapiers are very fast and direct. I felt like the rapier in your game was too slow. I think the damage is just right, but if you increased the speed by 4x or 5x times it would feel just right.

Don't have a rapier myself, but the knife or longsword is the same principle.

In this video I look exclusively at thrusting with swords and knives.

Godot will have visual scripting in 3.0, but the engines are so different that your choice should be based on the kind of game you want to make.

>1.
For a linear transformation (I'm not a native English speaker, is his the correct term?) an eigenvector is a vector (i.e. an element of a linear space) that is transformed by it as if it was multiplied by a number (i.e. an element of the number field). This number is the linear transformation's eigenvalue.

>2.
By counting the determinant of a matrix of the coordinates of three vectors in an orthonormal basis (?) you get the volume of the parallelepiped built on these vectors, or the negative volume of it, depending on how the three vectors are oriented.

This is hard to do when you're a brain slug who can't play videogames and hasn't played any since super mario. Or even worse if you have literally no sense of humor or for fun.

basically gogem's yesdev series is him repeating things he has read in game design journals and from agdg. But with his label on it. It's piss.

And sure there's a shit ton of money to be had. But most of that is split between the top 20% of games or something like that. There's a lot of failed games for every success. Now that doesn't mean that you shouldn't try but you shouldn't get into gamedev because of indie millions.

Also, succeeding in this industry isn't as simple as "just make a good game". If you think that then you're a fool.

I got the same feeling playing xcom 2012. it feels so hollow and full of odd non-sensical design choices compared to the original. sometimes "streamlining" things is okay, but a lot of modern devs don't seem to have a good grasp of basic concepts of what makes something fun or balanced.

Assuming the 1,5m copies is accurate you need to realize that most of the copies weren't sold at full price and quite a few of them would've also been from humblebundle. That on top of steam's 30% cut and his two teammates there's no way he made 10m.

He probably did still make enough money to not ever run out if he has been any wise about spending it

That's not how memory works. I like the songs, I like the art, I like the gameplay, The way it all sticks together, that's what makes the game. It's a way more memorable experience than something trivial and with little interaction as Social Interaction Trainer. It's not like their objective is to spawn a whole new genre of monolith likes too, but maybe some facets of the gameplay that have been brought to the foreground by it will be incorporated by further games in the genre.

Something new this time. Implemented the use for the daijoubu button. When the purple bar is full, you can activate it and enter the super state. While in this state, hitstun is heavily reduced, damage is reduced slightly, attack speed is increased, and all magic costs are reduced. The meter fills up very slowly over time passively, but it also goes up faster if you take damage.

Some moves don't really benefit from increased attack speed, and I'm not sure what to do with those. I will also have to figure out some kind of effect for activating and deactivating the state.

>i realize yall hate on me for finishing games and them getting popular and enjoying myself

this thing you call hate, in reality it's more of a pity

you don't even realize how delusional you are and it's honestly kinda sad to watch

every time you fuck up, people in here try to knock some sense into you but you refuse to listen, you continue to live in your own world and pretend like everything's fine and that you're on the right track because you had some minor success

truth is it's frustrating to watch because obviously you could achieve so much more, but you instead choose to be toxic to everyone trying to help and think you know everything better than anyone and are the best there is while objectively that's not true

I hope you change your mindset sooner rather than later, although apparently you've been this way for many years now so I'm not optimistic

>If you want to get rich then someone else who knows about that shit can help you with that but I know they won't say gamedev.
based on my interests in economics i'd say we're in a rentier capitalism boom for the time being.
create any sort of automated service to hookup consumers with producers (or potential consumers and advertisers) and put in the work to get yourself a controlling usershare and now you can charge both ends 30% (change to match your market control) on everything they do through your service and laugh at cheaper/opensource alternatives die even as people complain about your predatory practices because no one wants to be the first to go out into the wilderness.

By noisy holes do you mean the blocks of the world? I suppose I could fill those in.

Not sure about drop shadow, do you mean like the raycasting type or the HTML type? Either way, I doubt that I have the skill to add a good-looking shadow to it.

About the switching: essentially, I'm thinking of having two "parallel" worlds, connected, and actions in one influence the other. The transition effect would indicate transition between worlds.

we were going for a cross between Ryuji Yamazaki/Rokkaku Gouji/Albert Wesker/Jacob Crow

he's an egotistical, sadistic millionaire megalomaniac at the helm of a massive bioengineering and weapons corporation called Vertigo

Vertigo is in control of a large city that, because of Vertigo, has become the leading city worldwide in bioengineering and technological research

but the city itself is dystopic and cruel under vertigo's rule as his company pretty much exploits its people for the gain of the company and himself, furthering his bioengineering research to turn himself into an indestructible, super-powerful tyrant. All his corporation's goals are self-serving to turn him into effectively a god

corny plot but thus is fighting games. We tried to express the semi-militarized nature of his corporation, his wealth, his superiority, and his science/bioengineering in his visual design.

hard to tell, but his face is covered with scars from what is presumably operations done on him in the name of his bioengineering research, and he stands at about 7 feet tall from probably all the fuckin drugs and mutagens he's pumped into himself

he's gonna have a stance similar to Ryuji's, but hunched over like he's staring his opponent down and towering above them. no concepts for that yet

that data isnt actually useful in this context.
A) you want to make something new
B) skewed by whatever game is most populous in whatever metric they're measuring...it's probably not a survey of what they "like"
C) "most women" is inherently false as "most women" dont play vidya at all so you're missing the majority of women in any statistic of whats currently played

>LITERALLY FUCKING MUDS

Well, literally no one has made a turn based multiplayer roguelike. It would be amazing to have the depth of a roguelike but be able to play it with another person.

The problem I realized when starting to work on one, is that as you increase the number of players, you make it more and more prohibitively slow. Hell, even two players would be prohibitively slow.

Some things that could fix it (auto explore, mouse pathing to walk instead of keyboard input) make it better, but still would be awkward at best when one player wants to sit and think about the situation and another player just wants to walk a few goddamn tiles

Jesus christ, I haven't been following crypto snce May.
I just looked at the chart for Bitbean.
How did this dumb meme break 300 sats

yeah but how many dollars did that make you

I'm not sure how to do this with a traditional roguelike. I feel like a lot of the core functionality is having many different enemies, items, and environmental things that affect the gameplay.
>>
>>182008523
8x whatever he started with, before accounting for changes in the price of BTC, which could've made his gains closer to 16x.
>>
>>182008716
Well, you'd plan to do something unique with your roguelike at least, no? You could prototype that first.
>>
>>182008716
Some take that fact to mean that roguelikes are in general not worth developing anymore
>>
>>182008716
You start by making one of each.
>>
>>182008728
doesn't answer the question

>>182008716
if your game is "it's nethack/dcss but I made it" then nobody is going to bother to look at it

if it isn't like that, then, well, you have something to prototype
>>
>>182008846
The problem with this approach is if you have a fun core prototype with your new mechanic. Why would you ever choose to graft a roguelike onto that instead of making a focused game that stands on the merits of the new mechanic?

People who have been developing/learning games, do you do it while having a day job or you are self dependent.
I am in serious dilemma currently. I have a 9 hour day job and its very tough to do game development that includes overhead like cooking, home chores, eating, shitting.
Any advice?
>>
no thread when? ive got some progress too post and i'm not about to have it buried

Sounds like a great solution to me, not a problem.

Anyone know a sprite-based game with a great sword user?
I'm looking for references and there aren't really any in BlazBlue or Guilty Gear, so I'm at a loss right now

>>
>>182008972
Depends on the mechanic. If it can stand on its own then sure, might be better to re-think. Could probably still stand to benefit from more complexity if you're going for the roguelike crowd.
>>
>>182008846
I'm not sure. What I plan to do is have a roguelike where there are no classes or leveling up or magical abilities, everything is decided by what items you get and how you use them to fight enemies. And all the enemies should be unique.
>>
>>182009038
To start off, do you have weekends free? That's about 20-30 hours.
Spend the workday thinking and planning if you can, depending on the job you can even write design docs at work. Ruthlessly cut out everything that isn't essential to living or helping you progress at your game. Even 5-minute blocks of time add up, >>182009194 is not a joke. Cut out pretty much all media and shitposting. Make meals that you can cook one night and eat the next. Etc. Really think about how you spend your time.

All this assumes that you really want to dev seriously, and not just as a hobby.
>>
Is 600000 polygons/frame too much?
>>
>>182009038
Yeah man, I'm 35 and a well functioning member of society (aside from being here, I still can't figure that one out)

More and more I dev instead of playing vidya like i used to in my free time. I always made time to game on despite long work hours, relationships etc. You've just gotta squeeze it in where you can. I've been tinkering on and off for 20 years. Its a hobby for me, one day I might make something that makes a few bucks but I'm not betting my bank account on it. Its a bit like being a musician really, your either a rock star, or a busker and even rock stars end up playing shitty gigs in crappy pubs eventually.

$400 in at 30 sats
bought new graphics card and headphones and that money i've put into ICO's
... i'm up 900% since start of year even considering the massive losses over the last weeks
>>
>>182009387
Sounds like you can definitely prototype that and get useful results. A handful of monsters and items would be enough to tell if the idea particularly works.

That said do you have a plan to make early game not awful once you've played it a bunch of times? Without different classes to dick around with, the early bits will start to feel like a grind earlier.
>>

what makes your game different from brogue?

it was around 20x including the change of btc price in the time i bought it and the time i sold it for btc

i'm up 900% of my $3000aud i started with at the start of the year today
was up as much as 1600%

Currently doing this. I cook once in a day.
While commuting I am reading things needed for development. While eating and even taking shit. Still man I wish my dad were rich and I had no job to depend on.

Quaffing strength potions is Brogue's leveling
>>
>>182009807
I might start the player in a town where they can buy a few basic items to sort of build a custom starter class.

>>182009909
Brogue is my main inspiration. I kind of wanted to make brogue with more content, more types of weapons that behave differently. I'm not sure how to make it unique beyond that.
>>
>>182010295
brogue is open source
you can always, just, add more to it

I guess the only other thing to do is make sure that your game scope is small enough and that you're working on an idea that at least has the potential to be successful.

I've got a weekend job that gives me more than enough money to live comfortably. Plenty of time to drop on my game and not have my soul crushed by what can feel like a second job.

For a wage slave... I'd hahah I'd advhhahah... I'd advise you to find wayhshahhahhaha

Here's a thing about discipline that will at least help you spend the minimal time you do have a bit better

I work full time, single parent with two kids. I dev every night after I put them to bed for at least 2 hours.

My advice, is to make it a habit. It takes about two weeks to make something a habit or so they say. When you sit at your desk you need to be in a "working" mind set, not a shit posting or game playing one. I listen to music and drink a coffee and get cracking. Any work you do out side of your normal habit time is icing on the cake.

Pixel made Cave story while working as a salaryman.

Human beings vary by at least an order of magnitude at skills, don't take a personal failure to do something as proof that it's impossible.
>>
>>182010872
Oh, I'm aware.

2 hours/day is just a really wank amount of dev. Perhaps enough for mobile games / something simple like a platformer. Nothing wrong with that either, but I certainly wouldn't be able to make my dream games (which are all rather complex/big in scope) on that schedule.

I have never programmed a game outside of a high-school classroom while being tutored by my teacher using java. The game sucked ass compared to anyone else's.

I want to give it another shot, and this time take it seriously. What should I know before getting started in game development? what kind of engine would you recommend for a beginner to learn the ropes? what should i look forward to? what should I beware of?

I realize it may take me months or years of learning new programming languages good enough to begin actual development, but I'm willing to put the time and effort in place if it means I can create something I love.

I'm interested in making a short game, possibly a platformer to start with, or maybe a more technical type of game that will allow me to better learn development patterns.

sorry about the comments you're about to get

also you're a bit retarded for doxxing your kids
>>
>>182012231

I'm thinking about starting off with unity, but if there's another engine that helps with new guys, that'd be great. I'm not entirely familiar with engines yet and if there's some sort of pointer or tutorial as to what i might want to start off with i would appreciate the insight.
