So I nabbed Front Mission Evolved during the Steam summer sale, what am I in for?
>>
>>181746783
5/10 Story and 9/10 gameplay with wanzers.

Multiplayer is dead as fuck but when it was active was a blast. They really should've removed that skill that would remove all your boost energy though and not let you boost for a long time.
>>
>>181747160
When you say Wanzer, you aren't referring to the DLC packs are you?
>>
>>181748128
No, the wanzer is what the mechs in FM are called. Also, don't purchase the DLC for a dead game.

Only five more days until AC 20th anniversary.
>>
>>181751407
Gonna have some cool shit to show off for the 20th. I figured out how to give grenades the flaming AC effect upon impact, as well as how to change stagger so that weapons have a more noticeable stagger impact now. Right now still working on range and muzzle velocity, which is the last thing I really need to find in order to have all the "necessary" part stats found for a release.

I also figured out how to change shell weapons to energy weapons, funny enough: Ammo price and Usage Drain are the same stat, when you swap a weapon to "energy" type, it uses the same ammo price as usage drain now and just changes the label.

For the 20th I'm going to show some of this stuff off in a compilation video.

What's the best strategy for taking on Wanton Busker and Vola Volant? I can take out Busker, but I never have enough AP to take on the other one.
>>
>>181747160
Everyone told me the gameplay was awful. Was I lied to?
>>
>>181768591
Hide behind the dam and use orbit weapons + extension vertical missiles against Busker, then swap a linear rifle and handgun against Vola Volant.

Volant has AWFUL stability so you can stunlock him really easily with linear rifles. He also overheats really easily.

Once Busker's legs break, he becomes a sitting duck for any vertical missiles. Micro missiles also kill him super fast but they tend to cost too much ammo price to get an S rank.

https://indigogaming.itch.io/garrison-archangel

I have been playing this for like five days in a row. Gonna update again next week and add some new mech parts, new guns with limited ammo and more power instead of infinite reloading, it might have a glaive, and it might have a new Horde mode that sends waves of smaller mechs in after you in a holographic city with a full mech every 10 levels or so which they showed off in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXSF8n6eLJM

I've been really into the Falcon mech parts with the big jets on the back and either an SMG, rockets, and rifle or drill, gatling guns, and fist. With the SMG I like to stay away and either zoom in and empty a magazine into them or punish them for boosting toward me and then empty rockets when they exit their stun animation. With the drill it's bullfighting or emptying the gatling gun into them and timing a big lunge to the end of their stun animation and then close up punches to finish them off if I'm getting antsy.
>>
>>181783052
I saw good things about it before. How is the customization? Is it just weapons or can you change body parts too?
>>
>>181783395
Right now there's only 3 sets of body parts to choose from, your general medium, light, heavy types. Next update there's at least two more. But you got head, body, arms, and legs and the legs have weight they can support. There's also left and right hand guns or shields or swords or a hybrid of them, shoulder guns or missiles or jets, back missiles or jets, and some bonuses like more armor or bigger magazines. There's some stats like armor, stability, and a melee bonus if you stay under your max weight load or something like that. You can get up to 100% melee damage bonus if you're really minimal. You can also change the color with some preset palettes or you can choose your own color with RGB sliders or a big palette and have unique colors for different parts and guns.

There's a big ass sword that fires railgun shots, a drill that turns into a big hammer, a thick sword with a pistol on it, an SMG, a rifle, a shotgun, like four shields two of which parry and one or two tackle, an axe that turns into a scythe, etc and there's way more stuff in the files they haven't put in the game yet like a backmounted railgun and dual grenade launchers and anti-missile systems.

I think stabilizers are a ~ 10% increase across the board to max speed (they don't have diminishing returns) so with 10 rear stabilizers you might be able to hit 3800kph.
>>
>>181802082
Yeah, the singleplayer is an arcade mode which is just 1v1 duels against AI with different difficulty levels or a custom game mode which atm is only FFA or team deathmatch with up to four players, human or AI. Eventually it'll have Horde mode.

I recently emulated a gamecube game, "custom robo", because of childhood nostalgia, and love it, then found this.
I don't have any consoles anymore. Do you guys all play on a system or do any of you emulate these?
>>
>>181881467
Fuck yeah custom robot is the shit, I did the same thing as you about a year ago, but never beat it, I need to go back and finish it.

A lot of people emulate the PS2, PS1, and PSP games. Emulation isn't good enough for PS3/360 games, but it's easy enough to buy a used copy of them, at least in the U.S.
>>

what ac game.jpg
2MB, 2200x3696px
>>181881467
These days, most people emulate. Since AC is mostly 3D, it upscales well.

Try PCSX2 if you have a decent PC, but if you have a toaster, the PSP ports on PPSSPP are much lower requirements.

Armored Core 3 is by far the best place to start, and it's available as both a PSP and PS2 copy. The PSP games have native netplay so you can log into the coldbird server for multiplayer, but the PS2 games are local co-op only, requiring Xlink Kai to play with others online.

You can also pick up Armored Core Verdict Day on PS3 if you want something more modern.
>>
>>181882109
I decided play it again after finding my physical copy of the game. But, i moved a lot and all my early consoles. Figure since I still own said game, emulating would be fine. Took all of a few minutes to get everything going once you have everything, and you can use a modern controller with the buttons remapped.

Go back and play it, there's two divisions of the game. Main one has a definitive conclusion (i.e. bad guy), and the second half are a bunch of tournaments w/ different conditions.
Small word of warning though, emulation means no save data to load from (at first), so you'll be starting from scratch.

>sold PS3 because reasons; only have a PS4 now

But I'll look into those things you mentioned, thank you.

>>
>>181881467
I have an original PS3, so I can play all the old PS1 games, but they don't upscale very well. I've been emulating them and they run perfectly fine on mednafen, it just took a little to figure out how to do the disc changing in MoA and how to transfer the save data between them. I also just picked up Verdict Day so my physical collection is finally complete.
>>
>>181885676
Why do you think they're superior? I haven't played many PS2 era ACs, so I'd like to know the reasons of someone more qualified.
>>
Is there really no lock-on that lets you strafe around an enemy in AC3 Portable like in 4 Answer? This is really clunky coming from 4A and any later FromSoft game.

>>181890572
Yeah, the pre 4th gen AC games don't have a hard lock on so you have to control your movement and camera at the same time.
>>
>>181890108
AC4 and ACV really messed with the formula and lost a lot of the unique sense of progression by making it more or less just a reaction shooter or RPS. ACV/VD redeems itself through multiplayer, and AC4/FA redeems itself through visuals and characters, but neither really capitalized on the customization, character immersion, and sense of achievement that I get from the PS2 games.

It's mostly because the later games don't really have well-thought-out missions ore arenas that require changing your AC up more, and they remove the cash penalty of failing a mission.

>>181890108
customizing the controls is part of the game

>>181892383

>>181893056
Ironically, coming from a background of pre-4 AC, the addition of the aim assist took some getting used to for me. I found myself struggling againt the aim assist for control of the camera from time to time, especially when the battle got heated up, i.e. "all weapon buttons pressed down at once, palms sweating as fuck and frantically jabbing at both control sticks to get maximum aim and evasion" hot.
>>
>>181893775
For me it was
>"wtf is this bullshit?"

I think that they added those features to AC4 to make it easier to play using the default AC control scheme, which was intended more for ground-based close range stuff instead of the long range aerial fighting in AC4.

>Bit like modern AC with the lock-on
AC's used the same lock on system since the PS1 days though

Having not yet played Garrison, I'd say it looks closer to Gundam Extreme VS than AC, and that is NOT a bad thing. Extreme VS with AC customization is an arcade mech fighter's wet dream.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TG_tthSynM

I'd also compare it to an arena version of Mobile Suit Gundam Battlefield Record U.C. 0081. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYnqRlvPJh0

Also I'm pretty sure Battlefield Record is either heavily inspired or straight up ripped from ACV's gameplay, just slowed down a lot. The two are uncannily similiar, just like how Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn seems to be built on the ACE:R Engine. From didn't dev battlefield record, but Bandai was well involved in them by that time.

Also if any of you guys can deal with a game written in Japanese, I highly suggest picking both those games up. I'm not really into gundam but Extreme Vs was fun as hell /spoiler]
>>
>>181917250
How's the story for the games? I'm never a fan of Gundam's plot, but all I need is for it to be "tolerable". I don't need Shakespeare, just something I won't cringe towards.

> just something I won't cringe towards.

Extreme Vs? Given that it's all in Japanese and I had no real idea what the fuck was going on, I'd say it was pretty good. All the screaming slogans and announcing your special attacks got annoying.

Unicorn or Battlefield Record? Watch the anime, if you can stomach that you'll be fine.

So do you guys emulate any of the AC games? I have AC-ACMOA on my PSP, as well as the AC3-ACLR portable series. I'd emulate more, but I never opted for a higher level memory card.
>>
>>181990580
I emulated AC3 portable and I don't like it at all.

Might be able to emulate PS3 games, I mean there's an emulator for PS3 and Persona 5 works but I don't know if something like AC will.
>>
>>181992536
>and I don't like it at all.
How far are you into it? The hardest part about enjoying the game is figuring out a control scheme that feels comfy, if you haven't done that yet then you're still missing out on a large part of the game.

AC PS3 emulation is nonexistent. The 360 ones apparently let you get into menus but you can't play.
>>
>>181997013
I did the first mission and the first two battles in the arena. Yeah the controls weren't great, trying to move and keep the enemy in the lock-on window was a bad experience, and landing the sword attack seemed out of my control. Any ideas?
>>

>>
>>181997286
>I did the first mission and the first two battles in the arena.
You haven't really played the game at all then. It takes until getting halfway through the game because you really start to figure out how to make a good AC that feels and plays great. You're supposed to create what feels best for -you-. I mean, even with 1000+ hours into the game and years of experience I still discover new things and combinations of parts that feel better/worse than what I usually do.

Practice more. Read up on all the stats. Try different control mappings. Try out a lot more weapons and different frame parts. Swapping a few parts will drastically change how the game plays. Watch some gameplay videos and compare what you're doing with what they're doing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHjN1rp9FvI

It's always going to be PS2 era clunky, but you have literally billions of different combinations and parts to pick from and an infinite number of control schemes to mess with. Take joy in figuring out what works best for you.
>>
>>181998368
>>181997286
Also:

The point of AC is to go from a bumbling awkward idiot to a literal god of destruction by learning to use the tons of options the game gives you at the start. What right now looks like a bunch of weak individual parts, will eventually become pieces in a puzzle that you assemble to create something completely unique and (hopefully) powerful.

Missions teach you how to customize by throwing circumstances at you that are unique and require different parts to approach. The faction you take missions from will also give you more access to their types of parts as you win their favor.

The Arena is how you expand your customization safely, by giving you a free (no consequence for failure) way to get money and see how other NPCs use their parts to give you ideas on how you want to use your parts.

If I may share some of my wisdom; I use the control stick to look both up and down by assigning the "up" feature to the right, and the "down" feature to the down position, so if I ever want to reset my camera, I can just turn the stock to the bottom right. Overboost activated with stick left, and I think I mapped extensions to stick top. So essentially the left stick controls everything that isn't me moving directly. I let the d-pad handle that. L and R strafe, square and circle handle the hands, x jumps and triangle does something else I forgot.
>>
>>181910032
You have two options.
The first is a gatling sentry nest. Put them all somewhere annoying and keep them between you and your opponent so that they'll keep locking on to the sentries.
The second is spreading out missile sentries. In this, you want to take the fight to your opponent so you can get missile damage/stagger while your opponent is occupied with you.
For both of these, angle up. VD is super touchy about letting sentries stick to the ground.

How many MTs or Normals would it take to bring down the average NEXT while working alone?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1m5y8IKDhI

This mission pretty much was exactly that. Silent Avalanche in both games is the only MT squad that can actually fuck up a player if you're not careful. They're well placed, have ECM, do significant damage, and rely on team work.

The advantage of MTs was that they were cheap to deploy in swarms
The advantage of ACs is that they can be highly customized to fit the situation and take advantage of the environment
The advantage of NEXTs is that they are the strongest possible thing to face 1v1, but struggle against groups.

Really, a group of about 5-10 decent AC3-ACLR era ACs could take down an AC4 NEXT unless the next pilot was very skilled. And a single ACV AC can take down a "weak" NEXT like N-WGIX
>>
>>182023246
Nexts are pretty fucking OP though.
Silent Avalanche was an exception since they had great terrain to prep with.
A NEXT with a grenade launcher or dual miniguns can tear through a group
N-WGIX is only killable because the pilot was a dumbass who disabled his PA armour.
>>
>>182025516
>who disabled his PA armour.
Pretty sure his PA fails in the second half of the fight, he doesn't disable it. I always interpreted it as the PA on N-WGIX was really unstable

>Silent Avalanche was an exception since they had great terrain to prep with.
That's literally my point. It wouldn't take many normals to take down a NEXT, but it is absolutely dependent on abusing terrain, ECM, especially if it means disabling PA. AC4 was pretty good about this, a lot of the missions it's actually the environment you're fighting (like A Dark Night's March) than the MTs themselves.

>>182042562
It's up to interpretation. You're sort of an Ayn Rand superhero, using sheer force of will and desire to not be controlled to destroy all the established, flawed leadership and lead humanity to the surface. Not because you wanted to help humanity, but because that's just where being powerful leads you.

But on a more ethical note, there's a lot of details scattered thoughout the game that imply the Controller is going haywire (or is designed to start to fail once humanity can survive on its own) or that the controller is possibly under manipulation by one of the corporations. Either way, it starts targeting high profile ACs through bogus missions and picks the wrong target to kill, aka, you, and so you're just there to survive and clean up the mess.

>>182047697
Was it explicit that layered would be uninhabitable? Controller going haywire for some reason is definitely a thing though. I thought they talked about being able to continue to live in Layered without the controller though, and isn't that accomplished by the time SL starts anyway?
>>

From what I remember, the big MTs and the ACs with the Cricket heads are all under the Controller's direct control and they randomly show up to thrash parts of Layered.
I'll pop AC3 in later today and try to remember more specifics.

digital, obviously, given that they are shown to have computer-controlled interfaces/HUDs and keyboards in a few cutscenes

NEXTS actually seem more "analog" since they are controlled through the AMS system rather than physical pilot controls, but none of the ACs seem analog in a way that implies there's no software coding behind their controls and movement.

Arena rewards grow exponentially. They're also free income, so usually you kill 5-6 enemies to be able to buy something. Once you reach C and B rank you should be able to get 20k per kill or more.

Also, you can SELL items. So having more money means you can hold more variety at one point. After acquiring ~500k total credits (beating most of the arena), you will have all you need to build any AC in the game, you just have to sell a few parts to build it every time you need to change things up.

Missions give you less than arena if you are inefficient, they give you more than the arena if you know how to save ammo and damage.

R - Stick (D-pad remapped in PPSSPP) Look up down right left

R1 - Jump/Boost

X - OB/EO
Triangle - Switch Weapon

you won't be able to look reset or purge but you'll be able to at least target. There's an email you get from Laine that mentions
>The infrastructure that maintains Layered is failing. History tells us that Layered has always been under the guidance of The Controller. It's the only way Layered can exist.
Mirage sends an email that explicitly states The Controller is malfunctioning and they were trying to make a play for its power. They're scared of what happens without The Controller.
Crest also reveals that they know The Controller has been malfunctioning for quite some time. On top of that,
>Malfunctioning or no, if The Controller has decided to destroy us, then that is our fate.
I started at the bottom of the list and am working up, so here's another from Mirage right when they beat Crest and tried to gain access to The Controller
>As a result of The Controller's recent attacks, many areas within Layered are experiencing serious problems: power and oxygen shortages, flooding, and radiation leaks.
Another email from Laine reveals that The Controller's forces have been attacking corporate facilities and equipment vital to maintaining Layered's infrastructure.
Union tells us that the malfunctions are resulting in things like ecosystem changes.
There's an early email from Laine that says
>All aspects of life for those living in Layered are managed and maintained by The Controller.

There are also the two massive weapons deployed by The Controller for unknown purposes. Considering they both rain hot death all over the place, it can't be very beneficial.

Your job is to put an end to this bullcrap. That's why you're not the villain, The Controller is, and everyone else who just unquestioningly accepts the whims of their leader is a faggot.

Figured out how to modify weapon range in ACLR, and I THINK I found muzzle velocity (maybe). There's another stat in the same data block that looks similar.

It turns out that while most of the data in ACLR is coded little endian, range (for SOME reason) is coded mid-little endian, so manual searching wasn't helping. I think muzzle velocity might be also.

I did some testing and it looks like weapons of the same class all seem to have the same muzzle velocity. Not sure if that's because it's tied to weapon class or if because they just designed it that way. Even despite a description saying "high velocity rounds" WR98L doesn't have faster shots than Shade. I think the higher accuracy from this weapons is actually from a larger hitbox, not faster rounds.

Being able to change muzzle velocity is a key different between PS2 and PS3 era gameplay that would significantly improve LR's pvp, given that the current velocities are far too low (more designed for PvE).

>Defend Naire Bridge
>This part can be found immediately below the main bridge near the mission starting point. To reach this area, jump down to one of the side bridges and walk to where it ends. Turn to the opening below the main bridge, and land on the nearby scaffold. There should be a large gap existing between this scaffold and the area below the starting point. Begin flying in that direction and land on the highway. You will find the part at the edge of this highway.

Not a damn thing down here!

I think you might be on the wrong side, you have to cross a death fall gap to reach it I think.

Also jeez man, if you can handle it, crank that rendering resolution up. Even my toaster laptop can handle 1080p in that game.

What's the best way to kill the 10 thousand AP Leviathan that shows up in Launch Preemptive Strike?
>>
>>182177295
To start, that thing is a real cunt.
If you're really good at leading with rockets, those will work. Multi-warhead missiles will also take sizeable chunks out of it.
So, what you really want for this fight is range. I forget what the preferred cover is, I think it was either the structure in the middle or the walls, but this usually isn't a quick fight. You make a few shots and then you get behind something before the plasma eats you alive. It makes wide turns and long passes, so you need to make your attack and then be falling into the cover right as it's launching its attack. It'll also launch a ton of missiles, but I feel like the cover should keep you safe from that too. Might want to bring decoys just in case.
>>
So according to /v/ if you don't care about the multiplayer in Armored Core and always played for the customization, you're a "secondary."
>>
>>182178126
is that the pc term for beta
>>
>>182178126
That really only applies to 5th gen. The 'competitive' play in anything pre-ACV was a joke, to forced, at best. Sure, there have been tournaments, and online play in previous titles, but anything from AC1 through 4A were designed as a single player, story-based experience, so playing for the customizing is perfectly fine.
>>
>>182177828
high ECM, use the missile weapon arms with volute2 (or perhaps Monju).

The hardest part of the mission is getting a solid lock on. You have to attack it from the side. If you attack it from the front, it will shoot at you, if you attack it from the rear, it will outrun your shots. So you need to catch it right as it turns and is slowing down for a bombing run, but from the side.

Weapon arms are good since you won't get the parallel processing FCS penalty for having two attacks, and firing two attacks at once is important.

For the missiles, the missile interference shoulder units work pretty good, and that saves you from wasting ammo cost on shoulder missiles.

It's kind of one of those "Everything" bosses where you need an AC with no obvious weaknesses. You should have:
>High vs ECM
>Fast, long, and large lock-on (Volute2 w/ standard or Cowry/F69S with ND)
>Can reaction dodge both missiles and laser cannons
>needs high damage output
>can turn fast enough to keep track of the enemy
>can boost long enough to catch up
>Good VS missile systems

Sorry if you're on Xbox, I'll just be using PS terms, because I don't know Xbox controls.
Leave the sticks as they are. Place High Boost on L2 or R2 (or R1/L1 if you like using the bottom "triggers" for weapons, like most people), then put jump on the other. Boost toggle, bay swap, recons should be on the face buttons, then it's really up to you whether or not you want scan mode or shoulders on R3 vs. the last face button.

Personally, I have booster toggle on R2, high boost on L2, weapons on R1/L1, shoulder on triangle, recon on O, jump on X, bay swap on square, Scan Mode on R3, glide boost on L3, and then purging, pinging, and quick-text on the D-Pad.

Also, you sound new, so here's an in-depth video guide: https://youtu.be/FMsWxunJPGQ

It's actually a lot better to use the triggers for high boost since you can charge it more precisely, and is absolutely necessary for second/third staging in AC4/FA.

the trick is to learn what stats you're willing to compromise for strategic advantages.

>Energy EOs so you don't need a blade, but have low defense
>No blade means Dual weapons or weapon arms so now you have extremely high DPS
>High DPS so you don't need be as evasive in order to beat down enemies
>low required evasion means higher defense
>end up with the same dps/defense ratio but now with unlimited ammo EOs

you come full circle by compensating one stat for another until you've made a build where all the parts work in sync.

Well, they finally made a tweet acknowleding AC, only in the context of some other Japanese site holding a survey/questionairre about ranking the games.

Also, a LOT of the comments (easily 75% of them) are from Japanese people waiting, asking, or looking forward to AC6, which makes me wonder if there's something more to the publicity that we're not getting in the west if they seem to take it for granted.

Go spam them with english tweets asking for AC6.

Not to be Mr. Negative, but that's not exactly true. There's an announcement of the Onionbro figure, about a month ago, that's seen more attention. Also, the "_pr" account isn't exactly the main account for From. It's mostly used for things like patch and maintenance announcements.

Hey /acg/, I need your wisdom.

I have been working on the AI and just recently added wingman/companion behavior. It's still really dumb though, it'll charge right in and eventually end up getting swarmed and killed. To make them a bit more useful I give them a 2-3x multiplier to HP and 1/2x to damage. So I've been thinking, why not make them better, smarter? Maybe make them proper partners, that you can customize just like your own mech. However this would take lots and lots of time and I always considered mecha games more of a "lone wolf" experience, so I am not sure if "squad based gameplay" is a feature people would really appreciate in such a game.

tl;dr: Working on AI, not sure if I should leave friendly mechs stupid/expendable and focus on more important stuff or go balls deep and make them a more integral part of the game.

Also, if you have any features in mind that you always wanted to see in mecha games, just blurt them out. I might use them later.
>>
>>182250542
I don't think they should be integral. Based off my experience with UNACS in ACV, they were mainly bullet sponges, and please make them follow you around or stay near you in some way,. My main problem with UNACS is that they took forever to get to a fight

Another thing, I was thinking of adding another internal part called "Attractor" which governs how many nanomachines you drain from your enemy when damaging him(read: life-leech, based on distance though). Is that too rpg-ish? I think it would make the game more fun.

But what you could try to do is place a single two-lane road somewhere down the middle of the map and see what it does. I believe that it's not so much having a lot of detail as it is having something on-screen to reference for size. But again, when you have mechs that can turn on a dime, the sense of weight and size is kind of lost.

Also the last mech in your webm where you walked around reminded me of pic related

You know that's probably the best approach, instead trying to fill the whole map with stuff I am just going to place a few structures in key areas.

Unfortunately without the right lighting it doesn't look as intimidating

You don't need to rely on in-world light sources.

You could also clamp the angle that light appears on the mech so it's only on flattering angles, like http://twvideo01.ubm-us.net/o1/vault/gdc2011/slides/Ben_Cloward_Art_Cinematic_Character_lighting.pdf which is an interesting slide-format presentation on Star Wars: The Old Republic's character lighting.

Man, I really have to learn more about shaders. Thanks for the link mate.
Also if anyone cares enough, here is my shitty twitter:

There is also this fruitcake:

Nice guy, works on a similar game but his game has a focus on fighting monsters and whatnot.

>Because of the Human PLUS enhancements, she is able to fire the GERYON2 railgun without having to assume a stationary pose first and the performance of her AC overall is greatly boosted. Her MOONLIGHT in particular was powerful enough to cleanly bifurcate Amber Maiden VU, a well armored heavyweight unit, in one swipe. Her AC is also equipped with a new and experimental motherboard super processor that essentially allows the pilot to predict any and all moves made by their targets down to a tee

Something you've gotta add is squads of weaker mechs, tanks, helicopters, airplanes. Make me feel like I'm commanding a little army. I always loved that from AC3. Have them do some support fire, but essentially they're not really gonna pull the weight of the mission. You don't even need to program them to be that smart. Just basic attack drones that have a variation on their AI based on their weapons and movement patterns. You know, strafing runs for aircraft, seeking cover if you're a tank, defensive roles for mechs with shields. That kinda stuff.

>Maybe make them proper partners
Allow them to be programmed to move into relative position to each other and ALL enemies.

The critical failure of UNACs was that they would only move in response to the enemy they were targeting, so to any player that was not their priority, they ignored them completely, refusing to dodge unless their target priority was first changed.

On top of that, it means that you couldn't form UNACs in "formations" unless they shared the same target, and even then it was just moving in opposite directions. You couldn't program a UNAC to always stay 180 degrees opposite of its partner (aka, surround the enemy on both sides).

If the AI had a simple algorithm where it stayed within an average range of all enemies on the map (or even just the two closest ones) along with having it move in a circle away from its own partners whenever that range was maintained (until it was directly opposite) that would be sufficient to make them optimize strategy. That way they would always try to stay in the range of their weapons and always try to flank while doing so.

Doom.

Doom is your model for level design. I'd say that most AC games are doom-inspired (though more like just coincidentally similar) in their level design too, but Doom is a back-to-basics approach with enemy rooms and situational awareness.

The campaign is supposed to work a bit like in Dawn of War Dark Crusade, so there will be missions where you support an assault on the headquarters of a faction. I was thinking of making it a bit moba-like with endlessly spawning cannon fodder and whenever you fulfill a mission objective your "minions" move further forward.

You know I always wondered why UNACs are the way they are but I kinda get it now. Circling an enemy is not hard at all, what's really really hard for the AI is to efficiently navigate through the terrain, my game is ground-combat focused so I only have to make the AI "think" in 2D and it's still really hard. They still get stuck all the time or do stupid shit that gets them in a bad situation. I can't even imagine how hard it must be to make an AI function in all three dimensions.

>If the AI had a simple algorithm where it stayed within an average range of all enemies on the map (or even just the two closest ones) along with having it move in a circle away from its own partners whenever that range was maintained (until it was directly opposite) that would be sufficient to make them optimize strategy.

This is a really interesting idea, I'll try to add this to the companion AI. Can't promise anything though.

>Doom
huh can't say I thought of that yet.

I don't know if that's a good idea. It feels like it would be too easy to just let them soak up the damage, then come in and do damage, and rinse and repeat. I never knew Armored Core like that. In most games if you let your fodder allies or teammates die, you had to take the whole hoarde by yourself. Having them respawn infinitely means that you no longer have that threat.
