In his Confidant he basically acts like he did for the first ~30 hours of the game.

The character interactions kind of go to shit after Makoto joins the team. I think the writers just aren't good at balancing that many characters interacting. Every event became "okay, let every character say a single line so we can move on".

Also it was stupid that immediately following the "sacrifice" scene everyone just shit on him. I don't know what the point was unless at some point in development the last act of P5 would see a lot of people die like in DDS2 only to come back later when you rescue them in the Prison of Regression, and they already had the anime cutscenes done at that point.

Well it's not just that but...let me put it this way:
Ann and Yusuke act in the story in a comparable way to how they act in their Confidants. They may be growing in their Confidants but their main-story equivalents are still comparable people.

But with Ryuji, his confidant has compassion and rational empathy for tons of people (his mom, his teammates, Joker, Ann) just like he did, to a degree, in the first dungeon arc. But after that, even starting just with the second dungeon intro, he acts like such an asshole and becomes such a fame-chasing douchebag that I wish I he just stayed dead.

Like he actually starts to resemble Kamoshida's personality in a lot of ways.

Ann and Yusuke and Morgana aren't GREAT people but they aren't actively malicious like Ryuji is:

This too, though there are still some good ones.
Part of it I think is that not every person has a role like they did in P4/P4G.
In Persona 4, they were on an investigation team so they each had specialties and strengths in thinking and deduction.
The issue is that there are some characters that are legitimately useless from a qualitative standpoint to the Phantom Thieves, and Ryuji is one them. Once the marks went beyond the scope of the school, there was no benefit to having Ryuji or Ann on the team beyond their personas, which were now overshadowed by Makoto and Haru and Yusuke and even Morgana.

Yusuke is smarter about the city and in general than Ryuji or Ann. Makoto is definitely smarter and better at deduction than Ryuji or Ann. Haru has better people skills than Ryuji or Ann. Morgana is more functional than Ryuji (Morgana can turn into a car and can use a persona, Ryuji can use a persona and sometimes get the party into trouble with his idiocy)

Morgana often considers the ramifications of the meta-verse: he's the one who brings it up in the first place with Kamoshida.
Morgana isn't a good person neccesarily, but he's not actively an asshole like Ryuji is. He thinks he's great because of his skills, but most people can tell he's got his own issues he's grappling with. Ryuji thinks he's superior to other people in the way that Kamoshida did.

See, I never had issue with Ryuji calling Morgana a cat, because that's what Morgana was. It wasn't sensitive, but it was hardly any worse than what Morgana said.

That's when you go from normal person (some good, some bad) to an actual malicious asshole in my book. Like Ryuji's entire sense of morality in the story changes from "It's bad because people suffer" to "It's bad because it gets in our way or opposes me."

Tons of people like him, that's the overwhelming response when I talked to my friends about the game.

He was really enjoyable in the beginning and in his Confidant (I followed it through to the end despite hearing that the insta-kill ability was shit).
But he gets completely caught up in the momentum of being a Phantom Thief, he starts treating his status as one like it's a fuckign Olympic Medal. That's when I started hating him: when he became just as shallow and self-centered as the mementos targets he dealt with.

Everyone else begins to get concerned with the hysteria around the Phantom Thieves and all he can do is fellate himself with the attention

Morgana can potentially knockdown any non-phys-block enemy and can heal and deal damage. He can turn into a car too.
Ryuji can deal damage and that's it. He can use a support skill that I usually auto-apply to myself mid-game anyways. He actively takes away from the group in the story given taht his contributions (often choosing the laziest reaction to any danger or issue) actually hurts the Phantom Thieves' ability to prepare and respond.

This depends on how you intend to deal with the enemy. For example, on hard in Futaba's dungeon, even an AOA may not be enough to deal with Anubis. You're better off going with pure damage, or some status ailment strategy, then hoping for a lucky crit. While Morgana can be great for getting free crits and saving SP, it's not useful if the situation can't be resolved with an AOA.

Not if you're on Hard Difficulty...then Anubis' damage output becomes a thing to avoid at all costs, especially if given that I tried to get to the treasure from start to finish in one day (minus the calling card).
Maybe it was just me but the crits were crazy useful going into situations I wasnt neccesarily equipped with to deal with.

This kind of really annoyed me during Futaba's palace. We continue to get glimpses of this story about just how sad and fucked Futaba's life is, from watching her mother die before her eyes to being so depressed she doesn't ever want to leave her room.
Yet aside from Ann, I don't think a single other person gave a shit. They just wanted to save her so that she could help them with Medjed. It's really kind of fucked up and doesn't seem like how any of them would normally react.

Also, at least on Hard, healing is less critical in this game than maybe any SMT game before. You barely even need to heal during the final boss.

The game had its fair share of obvious narrative cliches but I really liked the contrast between how Sojiro and Tora deal with their experiences and tragedies.
Sojiro focused everything on the handful of people he cared about and he never really opens up to you or treats you better properly until after Medjed or just after the beach trip proper. Not a bad person neccesarily but he turned inwards and secluded himself and was cautious about opening up to people going forward
Tora does the opposite, he turns outwards and tries to keep helping the world, often at the detriment of his own personal success and status. I never got the sense that he had any significant family or friends outside of politics

It does resolve a little too well I suppose, but I think this is due to how his Confidant being Sun should be showing a way ahead and Tora truly getting past his own issues with no Mementos request. I see it the same way I see P3's Sun Arcana, these two are important as the closing chapter of the Fool's Journey since Judgment is always auto-maxed if you're on the right path but the Sun is what you sought for being fulfilled.
