Plus the bracket was purposely built that way: last tournament MehGamer did very well, and the following round won't be easy for DME as the other fleets built up to counter them before the finals.

Could I please get some points on what types of missiles are best suited as secondary armament in vanilla?

Right now I'm using swarmers/salamders/pilums for the AI, and annihilator rocket launchers/pod or sabbots if I'm piloting the ship.

And so far I only had a single Venture class ship that used missiles as more of a main armament.

Haven't had yet a ship capable of mounting the large variants so I don't know much about them.

It's almost impossible to go wrong with slapping sabots or harpoons wherever you can fit them. Sabots rip through shields and harpoons have very nicely sized booms.
Reapers are also a good choice, and the AI is alright at deciding when to blow its load.
If you can get a critical mass of Pilums firing they'll make a ball of death that rips apart damn near anything then retargets to another hapless victim. You'd need dedicated missile boats to do that well, though.

Sabots are pretty OP, you get fucked whether you block it with armor or shields and the range at which they engage makes it hard for PD to hit it.
Salamanders are good if you have multiple launchers. A single missile is easy pickings since chances are there's nothing else for the enemy's rear facing PD to shoot at.
Annihilators are useful for applying pressure without flux costs, though the small variant isn't really worth using over Harpoons/Sabots.

Also the scripted damage doesn't get improved with High Energy focus so that ship is probably not the best one to use it on. It also used to have a much worse armor penetration than the HIL, but the changes in armor damage calculations threw that out of the window.

It is definitely hands down the best large energy weapon I've found.
Bursts harder than most, is upgradeable with Expanded Mags unlike Tachyon Lances and similar beams, generates hard flux, has 1:1 damage to flux ratio, etc.

Tach Lances don't really compare because they don't melt the fuck out of armor. A full 3x SCPB burst with Expanded Magazines will kill a decent number of large ships if you bring their shields down first. Only the most heavily armored ships tend to survive that.

Its not really meant as an argument in this discussion but my #1 trigger when it comes to SS, is people measuring weapons by their damage/flux ratio/DPS exclusively and not the various other factors.

Everything from projectile speed, hit strength, how many projectiles are fired at once, to spread characteristics and chargeup can be meaningful and be a reason to pick the weapon over something else, especially based on the ship it is on and waht other weapons are used in the same loadout.

Assuming everything else equal, upfront damage is better over continuous beam-like damage. It works better vs armor, it's better for taking windows of opportunity (IE shooting at a frigate when you only have a split second opportunity before it fucks off back into the ether), and making the AI lower its shield/overload it faster since a single shot could send it over the edge whereas a continuous beam would allow it to just tank it till the very last pixel of flux capacity left before lowering it, at which point you'll be dealing with the armor as mentioned before.

Let's assume you deal 1000 flux worth of damage to the shield
The enemy has 3000 flux out of 4000
You hit, you bring him at 4000 flux, short overload.

If instead the enemy is at 3999 out of 4000 flux and you hit you will theoretically put him at 4999 flux effectively, since it can only have 4000 flux max the remaining 999 flux is converted into overload time, meaning he won't be able to raise it's shield for a looooong time

The problem mainly stems from it not knowing what it wants to be. The Maelstrom is a better "combat carrier", the Pandemonium is a much better "combat carrier", the Gust is a more efficient "combat carrier", the Storm has no niche to fit in except an extra two wings on top of the Gust. It works fine as a support role, but doesn't really do much in a front line combat role.

But for its cost you might as well get a Maelstrom or a Gust depending on whether you want high cost or low cost.

Like can instantly teleport a giant fleet hidden on the opposite side of a planet as soon as that tiny scout fleet bumps into you huge. Because reasons.

Recovery Operation skill bumps the chances for ships in general by 15%, but a specific boost for an individual ship doesn't exist.

It's "sort of" not that huge of an issue as something will always drop that you can use. It might not be something you'd normally consider hence the "making do".
The only thing that will cause you pain doing this is if you're looking for a particular ship, which can take a long time.

Dynasector: creates randomized loadouts for individual ships. This works on ships from unsupported mods but AFAIK it cannot add weapons from those mods to the random loadouts it makes. You will still see the unsupported mod's weapons on any default variants that came with the mod.

Nexerelin: You won't have the option to start as an unsupported faction, they won't show up in the faction directory menu, and they won't get any markets in a randomly generated sector. You can work around that by using console commands to give markets from an existing faction to the unsupported faction. Adding nex support to your mod is fairly easy if you follow Histidine's examples and look at how other mods are implemented.

Then get one of your other ships to distract it for long enough to:
1: fire some weapons to deplete the Neutron Armor (it acts as a regenerating 200 armor that act on the whole ship rather than being locational like normal armor, it also gives a hull damage reduction of 90% while active but i've talked with the modder and he said he's thinking about reducing it to 50%)
2: once depleted apply your favorite source of HE damage to the exposed side
3: kill the ship
4: move on to the next one

Metelson seemed balanced and the visuals fit the game. Not sure about dassault. probably just going to remove all factions and start a new game when i get off work.

I was actually one of the bigger advocates, and I'm actually kind of fine with this nerf. It was best in slot without a second thought, it was that ridiculous.

If you love the gun so much, I'd suggest switching to Tachyon Lances, they work very similarly. I've experimented with replacements today because I feared the gun would be nerfed into nigh uselessness.
Post-nerf seems to compare well to Shadowyards' Deva CAS Beam, which is what I'm using in place of it right now (and will likely not switch because it's more fun to use)

When it comes to "cheesing" the early-game, you take Technology - Navigation 3 and Industry - Surveying 3 and build a salvage fleet to make shit tons of dosh. You're going to want Navigation for that sweet boost to sustained burn, because you're going to need it to properly run away from pirate fleets.
Although I guess you could always take Safety Procedures 3 but I kind of hate it.

The only worthwhile late-game Industry skill is Field Repairs 2. Surveying stops being useful once you've surveyed everything, D-mods, once you have enough money to repair everything, only become relevant if you minmax non-detrimental D-mods (and if you're doing that, reducing their negative effects has no impact anyway), and Salvaging becomes pointless.

Salvaging 2 lets you open most important salvage points toward the outskirts of the sector. Salvaging 3 is required for some bases though. Salvaging lets you get the juiciest of hull mods in the early game, BUT, if you check every market, always, and buy every hull mod you don't have, this quickly becomes pointless. Cash rules, and Surveying is the best at generating that if you have next to no fleet. Just slap surveying equipment on literally everything, including those shitty 4 D-mod pirate frigates that you don't even have weapons for.

Trading if you know what you're doing
Surveying if you have the skill and a somewhat suitable fleet
Missions are a big deal. Look for procurement contracts, you can sometimes buy necessary items on-site and deliver them right to the destination without any fuss
Bounties if you have a military fleet. Getting a hang for how dangerous a bounty is might require some experience though

Don't bother selling or scrapping ships, just become a junk pirate and throw them at pirates until they fucking explode. At worst, they'll be an efficient meatshield.

Now the THI Qianzi-class destroyer sprite no longer looks like shit. Folks always liked this ship, so it was worth putting a bit if extra work into the sprite improvement pass.

Most likely no except for a new fighter or two. But, depending on how things go down some of which sit outside my own control. There could be others as well. Pretty much we shall see, timing of things is chaotic and unpredictable.

terrible ship mod. shields are *always* useful especially once you start running into massed bombers. PD is literally hit or miss in best of circumstances and i'd rather risk overloading from a torp volley than lose the ship outright.

Any way to increase market stock for all weapons? With how often I can't even seem to find a shitty light machinegun for PD after running out of everything else, it's as if lategame your fleet outpaces the logistical limit of the entire sector.

Are what I'd add.
Messy adds almost 300 portraits, but there isn't really a coherent style. You can find a dl link in the archives.

Outside of boss faction shenanigans, Neutrino is probably one of the easiest starts on there, due to how strong their ships are. Them being buddy-buddy with the Persean League also gives you a lot of friendly ports, and plenty of opportunities to deliver food relief for big money.

the combat in starsector is fantastic and it's the main reason I play the game so much, outfitting ships to aid in that is something that I think makes the combat more diverse and repayable. The modding community is great and one mod (Nexerelin) lets you capture planets for either yourself or whatever faction you are aligned with which makes the game have more of a goal.
Overall I'd say don't grab right now if the combat doesn't interest you, but remember that it's still in development and will be forever and gets one major update per year usually, and when that happens something major is added, so check back next year if you don't want to shoot niggas in space.

If you have the right skills you can use the Dmodded one and spend less in maintenance on top of the lowered deployment cost.

You should be able to make an Eagle work, depending on dmods. SO Eagle with a couple of heavy blasters can carry you through the early game.

the thing about the eagle is that it's a jack of all trades but master of none. it's a solid cruiser but don't expect it to surprise you at all. get some good medium kinetic weapons on the front to pressure shields and then fill the medium energy slots with phase lances or blasters or something else good against armor

I gave the eagle to one of my officers because it's no fun to pilot when the entire rest of the fleet rushes forward and you're left behind.

I managed to find one of these in a shipyard, though. Only 40k.

I'm running with maybe ten to fifteen ships, 2-3 destroyers one cruiser and the rest frigates and shuttles. I got crushed pretty bad trying to take on a 160k bounty but the 130k ones are ez pz. go figure.

might want to do some mods.

the difficult of bounties varies massively even at the same value

Comissions are 99% for access to the "military" section of buying ships at some size 6/7 world.
Those offer the best + largest selection

Though you could get all the same ships by just doing deserter bounties which start at like 300k+

it's not an ideal match since the plasma is a bit short-ranged and the sunder is made out of paper, but it's the cheapest large energy mount you can get. plus you get HEF for even bigger plasma balls.

If I've got a Tartarus Cruiser from Shadowyards with 5x Phase Lance and eventually a Tachyon Lance for the large mount, but zero PD, what would be some good support ships for keeping my ass alive? I can pretty much BTFO of anything that looks at me wrong, thanks to Siege mode allowing me to just near double my range and actually fire my full burst, but survivability is a minor issue. I'd use them for PD, but they're all basically used in one giant burst of fuck you, since 5 of them will instantly strip all shields and often the hull off earlygame ships.

Carriers can be fantastic if properly fitted.
You have a lots of choice, from frigate chasers that can also threaten destroyers in large numbers to bomber of all kinds.

Heck, you can't go wrong with Kopesh bombers when it comes to cruisers and up and the Kinetic bombers are self-replenishing sabots with a burst PD to sweeten the deal.
Or what about the fighter with both a burst PD and a ion beam for long range harassment? Stick them on a Buffalo MkII with converted hangars, makeshift shield and a pilum (plus any other missile) and it will be a supreme annoyance to most early to mid game enemies for a low low cost
