Man, after playing Ao for a good bit (I'm up to chapter 5), I'm kind of worried that CS is gonna disappoint the shit out of people when it comes out on PC. I want that game to do well financially so XSeed have the incentive to eventually localize the Crossbell games and CS3, but at the same time, but it's a pretty jarring step back from all the things Crossbell did right.

To be fair, every single new location starts out slow. Cold steel just happens that the setup took 2 games before the plan actually went into full motion.
Plus, Crossbell will also be a part of it, since it was a two step plan. So the stuff that happened in Crossbell, is probably related to what will happen in Erobonia, so i have high hopes for it.

Cold Steel had some pretty hype moments. I'm not going to spoil them here but CS2 in particular did an awesome job of setting the atmosphere with the scenario and also the soundtrack, which made everything more epic.

All just as hype as anything in Zero. I'll admit the ending of Zero was probably better, but pretending that Cold Steel wasn't fun to play is so fucking lame. All those events are just as good as their counterparts in Crossbell and Liberl

I don't think I can agree with those, although the contextual reasons for the third one makes it pretty interesting but the highlands got pretty old with me by the time I finished. Keep in mind I played CS1-2 before I even touched Zero and I don't think the stuff you mentioned matched the entertainment value of Zero's Chapter 3. CS1's ending is probably my favorite part of it, aside from bonding with Jusis at every opportunity. In retrospect, I enjoyed Legram and the spooky castle a lot more than some chapters, and you didn't even mention Garrelia Fortress.

Probably the most accurate assessment. Although, compared to the final "dungeons" and set pieces, I felt the Old Schoolhouse wasn't generally as interesting as the setpiece of retaking Grancel Castle and finding the best musical piece accompanying one of the least interesting final dungeons and raiding the cult temple, how matter how long it was

But I will admit, Realm of Great Shadow and what lied beneath there was great the 1st time, not so much the 2nd time.

Crossbell has tons of political intrigue too though. You see it all the time with how Crossbell keeps getting kicked around due to it's laws, since they are being squeezed by Calvard and Erobonia, plus all the Mafia shitting all over the law.
It also helps that the cast is as really likable, since unlike Cold steel, you see them interact with each other a lot, and there's not stupid drama, like Fie being an ex-Jaeger somehow being a problem, or Jusis and Machia's poorly finished rivalry. Cold steel's cast was kinda bloated since you had too many people at once at all times, in sky you did have a good amount, but each city made you stick with only a few of them at a time, until SC developed them further, and so did 3rd. Crossbell's main cast is smaller and thus easier to develop, and when Ao happens, you get to see even more and new ones added as permanent members.

I don't mind Cold steel, but i don't see it in the same light as yours personally. The other arcs were just way more polished and nicer by comparison. I still liked them, but not nearly as much.

Zero was a slow burn, but it had a lot of consistency and polish in its design. Having Crossbell City serve as a central hub was a pretty smart move on Falcom's part. Zero had you trekking all over Crossbell from a fairly early point in the game. That allowed for more interesting and varied quests than Sky or Cold Steel, since you weren't just stuck running around a single town's periphery (well technically, you were, but you know what I mean).

Cold Steel 1 went back and tried to polish up FC's formula, but it made things too rigid by tying the plot and progression to a fixed schedule. Almost every field study plays out as such:
>group arrives at their lodging and eats some delicious food
>spends the first day doing chores for NPCs
>some shit goes down on the second day
>group resolves the issue and boards the train back to Trista on the morning after

You can argue that FC and Zero were also somewhat structured and formulaic, but not to that extent. They also didn't have dumb shit like the Old Schoolhouse.

Why do people feel the need to argue that one arc is "better" than the other in the first place? I loved every Trails game I played.

I think 6 would be fine, or the current amount. The main issue is having them interact properly, or do it like FC, where you will be stuck with only certain ones at a time for a good chunk, and them see more sides to them, and when everyone comes together, have them share a few moments.

They could have fixed a lot of they tried to maximize some of the bonding events to include more than just one character sometimes. The inherent problem with this is that you'll miss out on other characters' bonding events until the next playthrough or just savescum to see all of them but I feel like they could have been ever so slightly less mundane and have more of the cast interact a lot regularly with each other. I can only name one non-event bond-raising activity being finding Fie to have her go study with Emma which raises both of their bond ranks.

From what I've seen, it seems that Red Constellation is a family-run group of psychopathic murderers that enjoy their line of work while Zephyr seems more way professional given how they have uniforms and how they were financially and mentally stable enough to raise a kid and still not have her do any dirty work.

Tio probably likes him too, but hers is more of a young girl type love, while he doesn't see her that way. Elie on the other hand, has Lloyd literally try to snatch a kiss from her in Zero's final bonding event with her, and in Ao confesses that he was charmed by her from the start, and tells her he loves her too, while with everyone else he's not upfront at all. Noel he gives a Dogtag, and says he'll give an answer after it's over, Tio is just a cute bonding moment, Rixia is more past reveals and helping her cope with it.

Seems weird that a random punk like Wald actually has a portrait. At least with Wazy, it's obvious he will have a larger role in the story.

Different kind of game in the first place, a lot more about Cold Steel-like NPCs, sidequests, and stories in not-Tokyo, then segmented dungeon-crawling and combat mixing CS field attacks with Nayuta/Zwei II. It's apparently got a really predictable, LN/narou-tier main story with good and great NPCs like you'd expect. The music's awesome, playing on the current sound team's strengths, and it certainly looks decent on PS4/PC. So I'm hoping the new rebalancing/highest difficulty in eX+ makes up for pacing issues and how much the game recycles from previous games.

I liked Celceta, more than I expected too, but it seems like Ys VIII might beat out all of Falcom's games since 2012. Even impressions I've heard about the story sound better than the writing in CS (II), not that I haven't enjoyed this arc so far.

Dungeons in VIII are much improved from Celceta, and the ones added for PS4/PC, mainly just for Dana's story, are apparently even better. I don't know why Celceta's dungeons turned out that disappointing myself, as some have great concepts but either force you to swim (which sucks in that game, unlike just walking underwater like in Seven and now VIII) or don't have much of interest at all. Underground Ruins and Tower of Providence are easily the best dungeons in Celceta because they're paced just right, keep swimming/gimmicks to a minimum, and have great combat.

Then you get wastes of time like the Colonia Research Facility, which is cramped and boring to get through, and Sacred Beast's Lair which takes forever, looks dull, and ends with two stupid bosses. At least the Komodo burrow's easy to complete, but it still has that worthless tunnel gimmick which the game never develops. The other two Elduke dungeons are decent, but feel rather gimped, and Iris feels all over the place (I prefer the silver road just for being quicker and less focused on puzzles which keep you from combat).

I think it really comes down to what Olivert's end plan is. Rean seems adamant that Olivert does not want to be like Dreichels, but we as the player have seen a very different side of Olivert that he hardly shows to everyone as seen in an number of scenes throughout the series (his private conversation with Osborne being the big one) and SSS/Kloe in Ao. Rean only knows the public and playful side of Olivert, he does now know about the more manipulative side of him.

Was that the cast for all of the Liberl and Crossbell games too? I thought by the end you were good enough to deal with the problems of the games.

Obviously you'll be outclassed at the start because that's usually how JRPGs work, otherwise you could end the game 50 hours earlier than they should.

Cold Steel's the only one I can think of where you're mostly helpless. CS1 ends with Crow BTFOing Rean even after you beat him and having to run away like a little bitch, and CS2 has you constantly need rescuing from stronger characters all the way up through the final dungeon and even at the final boss Rufus steps in to arrest Cayenne and take out Vita and rescue Cedric.

The only time Rean isn't outclassed and either saved by someone else or let off because the enemy's plot was ironically when he's the antagonist against Lloyd.

Rean's a soldier, Lloyd's a cop. That's pretty much the difference right there. Lloyd's trained to nonlethally arrest steel level criminals, Rean's trained to fight in wars and as of CS3 has finished his military training and fought in several wars at this point.
