It's more useful to prevent being doubled than to double. The only way Legions will deal any significant accumulation of damage to Xander on a fort tile is by doubling him and triggering their specials over and over. If your speed is high enough to prevent that without axebreaker, you're fine. You don't particularly need Xander to kill the Legions any faster because that will just start triggering more reinforcement spawns and as long as their AI is caught up trying to hurt a high-def sword unit on a defense tile, they're not really a threat.

Blarraven does great against that invisible-defense archer up top, especially with any TA tier, taking 0 damage as opposed to the damage it does to other units whilst proccing Moonbow every time, you definitely want him out of there. In addition, there's that red mage on the side you want to kill, and Robin can help pick off the spare Legions and that red knight while you camp near the bottom. If you have Blarraven and want to slap it on a better blue mage, then go for it, but Robin's the only one I had.

It takes like 3 weeks to get 20k feathers, but it literally takes 36 stamina and about 5 minutes to do the 10th Stratum a couple of times and get 20 Great Badges.

There's no set definition really. But some of the confusion comes in when there are whales out there that drop $500+ dollars a month (or per banner) and yet people see a few merged units and cry whale. To be fair, part of what makes the Legion battle difficult is that the amount of anti-buff effects going on make it impossible to use the copious amount of stat-boosting abilities available. Normally, the weakness of 3 star units can be mitigated somewhat with abilities that improve stats, but you can't use any of those here on anything that will exchange a round of combat with a green unit.
