I'm playing the game for the second time.
The game kinda ended unexpecetly fast without any warnings. I was kinda trying to do all side missions etc before finishing the game but i didn't prepare for it to come that fast.
I'm happy the things have have been happening in my second run this far but it feels kinda bad if i have to do all the side missions that i did previously again. Like investing around 200k in the inventor robot. How does this part work?

I got a friend who just finished Automata and said to me that he won't go deep into the lore because he's got enough of lore fagging with dark souls before.
As I haven't played souls games - how do they compare to Nier lore-wise?

Souls games are completely different as even with all in-game materials you only get a vague understanding of what the fuck is going on with multiple possible interpretations. Taro provided a fairly extensive and finished narrative in Automata alone, even without side materials.

Though Bloodborne's lore is fairly complete, especially with DLC. And the game has a few extremely powerful moments.

I just finished the game...and although I enjoyed it, anyone who says the story is anything more than a 5/10 needs to read more books. It's literally babby's first existentialism. I will admit the story concepts are well executed and there are great setpieces but if I have to read like 4 non in-game novellas and short stories and concert shit just to get the full story, I think something's wrong, even if it is a Taro thing. I don't mind there being side content, I just mind that so much of it isn't in-game.

Still an 8/10 game to me and probably the best game released this year so far, but I felt almost nothing for the characters. The world and atmosphere was great as a tangent from the original Nier though.

I agree that the game isn't 100% about existentialism, a large part of it is the nature of consciousness, but I'd say the dominant theme is existential. Which is perfectly fine, I just found it to be treated in a fairly sophomoric and trite way.

Okay, so it is, fair enough. Taro makes interesting games and concepts, but I think that the fact that he hides things in side content hurts the narrative of the game itself. Just because it's his thing doesn't make it good, I just think it needlessly obfuscates things. And I'd be totally okay with it if it was in-game. Morrowind is a perfect example of a game where you really had to delve into lore books to truly understand the narrative; but the difference is that those lore books are all available in the game itself. It doesn't help that I personally find the novellas, short stories, and concert scripts to be mediocre at best, at the very least in translation.

I don't hate the game or Taro at all, as I said in my original post I give the game an 8/10, I really enjoyed it and put 50+ hours into it. But I think the story was one of the weaker parts. It built a great sense of atmosphere and mystery in certain parts, only to be concluded in an unsatisfactory manner. I think certain stuff about the characters, like 2B and 9S's past relationship, ABSOLUTELY should've been included in the game. It would've been so much more impactful. Plus the lack of development for A2.

It's fine that you enjoyed it anon, I just have a different opinion.

Giving away more details about 2B/9S backstory before the final 2E reveal will only make it less impactful.
The only new thing in side materials was about the creation of YoRHa. Everything else was in some form available in the base game if you paid enough attention.
Inserting all this 2Bx9S fanservice into the game won't make the story any better.

There was a visual novel behind Anemony's terminal wich gave a good summary of YoRHa stage play. But I do agree that there wasn't enough of A2 playtime and her development was rushed.

I agree about the reveal. But I think the reveal could've been built up to in a better way. The relationship between 2B and 9S is never really questioned (I mean by the narrative, by the player of course it's different). I feel like there could've been a couple more snippets of dialogue or scenes that would've made you be like...huh, what's going on there, why are they so close? Then you have the 2E reveal, and then maybe a quick flash back or "novel" portion where a bit of their tragic history is revealed. It wouldn't have been hard, just a few adjustments. I don't think it would've been fanservice even, it just would've made more sense and developed their characters more since they're pretty much the only thing we have to latch onto. The 2E reveal evoked nothing in me, it was just like, k. Even just a little bit about it to give a bit more context would've been fine. I think that the narrative has a lot of great ideas but suffers from padding, pacing, and somewhat poor to mediocre writing. A few changes here and there would've easily brought the story from a 5/10 to a 7/10 in my eyes.

As for the other stuff...fair enough, I suppose I should've paid a bit more attention. Another thing about A2's development is her whole thing with 2B...I just think that leaving that revelation to side content takes all of the oomph out of it.

Basically, my whole complaint with Automata is that it doesn't stand on its own to the degree that the original NieR or Drakengard did. Maybe part of that is because it's the culmination of a lot of threads in the series, but I think the problems with Automata's narrative entirely lie in character development and not in worldbuilding. It just didn't have characters that excited you or endeared themselves to you like NieR. So while it's a very good game, it's narrative isn't up to the standard that Taro himself established.

9S literally says about him being repeatedly killed in ending D monolog. Not hard to connect the dots from Amnesia, Wandering Couple and some other quests/events with 2E reveal. And there are also Virtuous Treaty/Cruel Blood oath weapon stories.

what are you talking about? The only thing we've learned from the concert script is that A2 killed both 2B and 9S before a couple of times - it doesn't add much to the story. 2B being based on A2 was also said in the game.

Did anything ever explain what the "logic virus" was? I get the part where it makes androids (and machines) lose their reasoning, but what's with the "slowly turning into rust" thing with 9S in ending A/B and side materials? And why is there a "vaccine" for it? The virus is a computer program, so anything that can fight it should be a built-in antivirus program, not something to be injected when an android is down.

I think I had that or something similar sometimes. It was caused by the Steam overlay. I accidentally brought it up and some key that was pressed at that time got stuck and the game wouldn't recognize that I let it go. For me it went away when I restarted the game. Honestly, I was hoping the hidden dialogue in the Emil fight for A2 would be him seeing something in her that reminded him of Kainé - even if it was just one line as he's dying, it would've been super nice to have it confirmed.

Well, the main thing I have an issue with is the fight with Adam - they kind of went for a Metal Gear Rising Monsoon fight sorta feel, where he was taunting the hell out of Raiden and eventually got him to snap, you know? The 9S impaled on the wall reveal thing was supposed to be that moment for her.

Except... it fell flat on its face entirely, because 2B didn't get nearly mad enough outside of one outburst (that has no consequences in the actual fight). Since she has no relevant gameplay mechanic, there's nothing to make the fight different as a result of it. Again, to compare it to the Monsoon fight, when you push someone with even the best intentions too far, they snap - and Ripper Mode was a great addition to the feeling of that fight. I feel like almost everything about the Adam fight wasn't impactful.

Complaint: The sound design doesn't lend itself well to the fight, and it felt plain unsatisfying to hit him. Him having a shield, and having tiny little dinky sounds happen, or none at all, instead of a satisfying hit/slice sound was such a poor choice.
Missed opportunity: 2B has no gameplay mechanic like 9S or A2, so even a visual effect on screen, similar to what you see when you start casting a self destruct, saying something like her vitals are going into unsafe territory, would've been fine.

Complaint: 2B says nothing during combat the entire time she's fighting him.
Missed opportunity: You know how in Street Fighter IV, when you fought your rival, and they'd have all this back and forth taunting and banter if you hit them/they hit you? I feel like this is the one time 2B SHOULDN'T have been holding back emotions, and it would've been perfect to see her UNABLE to hold them back seeing someone doing that to her Nines.

Even A2 killing 21O was more brutal, and that was just making SURE she was dead. 2B is god damn 2E - we could have gotten to see her actually be good at executing someone other than someone she loved, where she holds back or does it as cleanly as possible. This should have been the one time she showed off that side of her, but we never get to see it, we only get to see her holding back even more, when we've already had almost a whole route's worth of that.

I just feel like this could have been a pivotal moment in showing off more facets of her character, and making you connect with her more - a lot of people I spoke to complained that even after the end of route C, they still didn't really understand why 9S loved her so much - and if you haven't read the side stories/concerts etc, it's really easy to understand why someone might feel that way. I personally shouldn't feel angrier at the big bad boss man than SHE does for impaling her totally-not-boyfriend - if anything, my emotions should be unable to match hers in their intensity.

Also, finally, I feel like the OST they went with didn't lend itself well to the fight - I loved the first phase of it, where it's still the Copied City theme, but "End of the Unknown" just doesn't have enough strength to it to carry the emotions that fight is supposed to make you feel. A good example of a fight that goes well with its OST is the fight in the factory in the dark, with Possessed by a Disease playing.

That's just one thing that frustrates me about this game.

People who let emotions cloud their judgement during actual combat are the ones who get killed. 2B is a pro; review the scene in Memory Thorn where the machine lifeforms show up and she transforms from unsteady girl to murderbot instantaneously.

The side materials answer those questions, but yes, 2B has always know she was an E model, and no, she has not been looking for opportunities to kill 9S, she only does it upon order from command. While androids do store their data, they do not restore 9S to the version that knew whatever secrets he wasn't supposed to know, before he is assigned with 2B. She wouldn't do it if she didn't need to, she loves 9S, he's the most important thing to her, but for them to be together, she must keep killing him, since he is a very advanced model he always eventually discovers SS rank information, and must be terminated. She may have even killed herself, but 9S, during one mission where he discovered her true identity, made her promise to keep killing him, so that they could stay together.

I believe that in an effort to imitate humans more, androids would eventually develop a way for male and female android models to mate, females having a mobile android fabricator in place of a womb, and the male's semen delivering his own model and personality data to be compiled with the mother's and randomized to produce a child. This right here. People seem to have this idea that blind furry makes people better fighters but the opposite is true, a cool head always wins the day. This is one of the reasons I like the English versions of 9S's "conform the death" speech because it hits the right balance between combat focused and audibly enraged. With 2B she was already pushing it and anything more would break her character IMO.

Yea that one. In the jap the final few lines are string together and spoken very quickly but in English there is this almost tranquil fury to his lines. You can see this difference through the animations which have a lot of jerkey head and neck motions while the English lines are spoken in a much slower and more deliberate fashion.
