Another thing about Persona 4 and the fact that the cast felt like your friends was that it made me really excited to play the spinoffs, just to see my old friends again. Every time a new game came out, it was like taking a trip back to our home town after leaving for a while. The cast in 4 is more fleshed out than 5, but in the end their bond still feels...superficial, I guess? Most of the time their interactions are easygoing and take place during fun times, and the one point of strain when things do take a turn for the worst in the hospital nearly tears their group apart. They do hang out with each other, but they still tend to divide into subsets that are constantly reused all the time, like just splitting off the upperclassmen from the underclassmen.

So there's a lot of underutilized interactions, Chie and Naoto barely interact for example, even though their character arcs are extremely similar and should intersect. Kanji and Yukiko knew each other from childhood, but they barely try to reconnect even when they become a part of the same friend group. Yosuke always ends up talking with Chie or Teddie even though he would have more discussions in common with Naoto or Rise, people who spent more of their lives in the city.

I just look at P4's team and see a lot of wasted potential because they keep going back to those same interactions, so it feels like more like friend groups and their mutual acquaintances rather than one big cohesive group.

While yes P4 had more goings with IT as a whole I think it's wrong to say PT are only together because they can fight shadows.
I personally felt that they grew a bond together as being a group where each member was shunned by their peers. They all genuinely cared for each other and it's a shame that most of their conversations were through texting.

That said I prefer SEES because it was my first Persona/SMT game and I followed them the most.

I think they should be able to grow as people without their powers changing with them. They do achieve those powers ultimately: just in a higher pressure situation than they did in the games. The movies just ran on different logic, Makoto didn't even need the Velvet Room to fuse.

If I'm not totally wrong, Ultimate Personas in P1 and P2 weren't even tied to character development, rather key items instead. In P4 and P5, Ultimate Personas could be achieved with after as little as a week or two of amateur detective work while eating ramen with your buddy.

I can see why you think everyone should have had their own individual moment the way Trismegistus and Messiah did, and why those scenes are weaker without them, but I was personally alright with it. The last movie's group awakening was pretty good

If you've never played an SMT game before, Apocolypse isnt so bad. Its sort f a half step between Persona and Mainline.

The problems occur when you start expecting a typical SMT and get themes involing friendship and unity. By all and all, I think SMT4A's characters were fine, if you werent going in looking for a successor to SJ, Nocturne, and SMT4 (ironically)

But most of the mainline games will present you with a choice between a hero of choas, a hero of law, and some other option(s).

I dislike the term "dark" because its used so often that is has no meaning. I'll say that essentially every Persona has focused on friendship and unity overcoming the obstacle. I'd say that in nearly every mainline game, it seems more concerned with dedication, pragmatism and sacrifice to change the world. Oftentimes this comes at the expense of people you once allied with or called a friend.
