Which matters more, looks or personality?

I feel like this event is a pretty good example of the limitations of F/GO's storytelling. It's a gacha game, so every Order needs to have a varied cast to convince players to roll the gacha. And similarly, every Order's plot needs to somewhat fit into the framework of "(you) and a couple Servants investigate a problem, encounter a powerful enemy, and eventually manage to overcome it". This works out most of the time since F/GO is pretty much the summer blockbuster of the Fate series: as long as there's enough spectacle, most people can ignore that a lot of the characters are pretty flat.

But then you get this event, which is a collab with Extra. Extra is fucking huge on introspection and development, so to reflect that this event takes Melt and Lip as they were post-CCC and turns them into more reasonable people. Problem is, while that's easy with Lip (CCC did most of the heavy lifting), Melt requires a lot more focus to handle her issues.

But at the same time, a character like Melt isn't going to warm up to the MC that easily. I guess Nasu could've tried to pull an Ereshkigal and write in numerous one-on-one bonding moments, but this is still an event. The script can't be as long as an actual Order, and most players probably want intrigue more than romantic drama. So the solution Nasu came up with is to have all of the important stuff happen in the past, and to bring up flashbacks to particular key points. That way the plot can progress speedily and he doesn't need to explain why Melt is so cooperative. The fact it adds to the whole mystery element the story had is an additional plus.

Again, this is fine from the perspective of "F/GO as a summer blockbuster" but for me it's also disappointing because I wanted to see how Nasu would develop Melt.

Also I'm a sucker for tragic romances so the original timeline hits all of my buttons.

Nasu has been using his blog more and more as a dumping ground for half thought-out plot ideas, so he might flesh out the original timeline there.

It doesn't seem like there's much to it, though. You run across Melt when both of you are at your lowest states, you team up, and then you bond over the course of fighting Servant after Servant. It's the kind of thing that would be doable in a regular VN (well, maybe. You'd have to cut the 40+ Servants you fight down a few notches because that would get boring) but would be immensely boring in the format of F/GO because it'd just be Battle With Only Melt -> Story -> Another Battle -> More Story -> Repeat.

Personality and Design. It's Fate, so there's not really any unattractive characters. Even Jinako doesn't look horrible as 2D, and she'd be a whale IRL. Even some of the boys look good. Looks just sort of let you settle.

I would say personality on the long run but looks are extremely important to caught your attention.
I wouldn't care to know more about a character I don't like at first sight, but I would end up caring about if I end up finding I like his personality, thing is I won't look for it but I can only find it along the way. I have found quite a few characters like this, Medea comes to my mind since I normally like only lolis or petite girls exclusively in terms of both but she managed to hit all the right buttons and I loved her character.

I'd say it's less an issue of length and more an issue of focus.

To get a character like Melt to develop, you'd have to basically do what happened in the original timeline: (you) and her are in a desperate situation, and since there's no other way out you two must cooperate. Melt struggles with her newfound weakness, tries to reconcile how generically nice (you) are with her image of humans, and in general wrestles with her own sense of self. This would have to be a slow, longterm thing and the entire time it'd just be (you), Melt, and whatever enemy Servant you're fighting this hour.

It'd be perfect for a romantic drama, but it'd be absolutely fucking awful for F/GO. People want character interactions, not therapy sessions.
