Are there people who legit think these romances are well-written and feel earned?

It’s like someone took a “How to Write Forgettable Anime” guide and flipped to the “How to Force Your Characters into a Soulless Partnership Based on Stock Personality Traits” chapter.

“Hmmm, I have an original idea that’s never been done before! Let’s pair off the naive hero-type with the tsundere! Brilliant! It will go perfectly with our genki friendly heroine type and sad mysterious boy with a past couple!”

Remember when this series was about subverting that kind of established tropey nonsense?

It would bother me less if it weren’t detracting from the characters themselves. And honestly, they ALL suffer from it. It makes HaruMaki’s cooperation entirely dependent on how wet she is for Momota, it makes Monota a sexist jerk who doesn’t respect personal boundaries, and it makes Akamatsu put Saihara’s self-worth above everyone else’s safety. Unlike the other 3, I don’t even like Saihara, but the story ramming his days-old crush on Akamatsu down your throat as if he’s lost his wife of several years makes it really hard to take his guilt (which IS a realistic and interesting aspect) seriously.

While it gets a bit excessive in early Chpater 5, the subtle way you can tell Shirogane has a thing for Gonta actually is done well–she cites specific fond memories of him, and has been friendly and kind to him this whole time. She didn’t get up in the first trial and defend him for absolutely no reason leading to wooden exchanges meant to substitute for actual chemistry.

The problem I have is that Maki is indeed quite cold and to the point, but unlike characters like Kirigiri who actually embrace their talent with pride the entire point of Maki is that she's trapped into so many obligations it was easier to just cut herself out of the picture and Kaito played a big part in getting her to see this isn't something she should do.

Frankly, my issue about so many of these shipping complaints too is that upon looking once more and especially looking at how Maki asks Saihara about Kaede in chapter 4, it's pretty clear these ships aren't just about stupid teenage love but also about finding one's self which is why Maki saying she does love Kaito before his execution is an important part of her character as it's literally the first time she's fully made a decision of her free will in spite of how painful it is.

I love how Ouma's free time events expand on Kaede and Saihara as well as Ouma himself. IIRC, only Chiaki and Komaeda's free time events did that with Hajime.

Something people forget about what made Kaede shine as a character is that she's rash, naive and unfortunately didn't listen enough to the people who told her to be cautious but she did in a way set Saihara on the right path by advising him that only people who pursue the truth can decide their own destiny. For someone like him who became afraid of revealing the truth after one murder case Kaede was a massive inspiration.

The ultimate message of the game is that the truth that is 'you' is something only you may decide, which is beautifully reflected by how Beatrice lives in illusions and never accepted herself while Ange was eventually able to accept the horrible truth and create a new truth from it.

But yeah, considering Amami was also worried about Kaede as she's someone who's 'honest' I can see the wisdom in Ouma's words especially in how he said lies present so many possibilities- While he certainly loves silly pranks and acknowledges how lies can be used for good, too many people seem to think that means he likes lies and ignores the very real possibility that a liar with much more ill intent than him will whisper sweet deceptions that sound like a nice 'truth' into one's ears which in turn becomes accepted as people don't want to look at the ugly, unchanging truth.

Not gonna deny that. But she was rather the person that kickstarted his development rather than be the one main source of change, Kaito more or less picked up that role afterwards and that's what truly helped Saihara change and keep going even when neither of them were around. Without it, I think he'd eventually revert to his original truthphobia within days of Kaede's death.

They'll take HICKSHON fairly well, and there'll be a lot less "KAEDE DID NOTHING WRONG AND DIED THIS IS FORCED WRITING" complaints. Characters like Tsumugi, Ouma, Amami, Iruma, Kaito and Maki will be more clarified due to some people still believing false translations on them to this day.

Yeah, I agree with that. I actually like that once you look past his shonen hero qualities Kaito is as much a person who pursues the truth as Ouma in that both refuse to accept things the way they are. Where Ouma plays the role of a skeptic and challenges others, Kaito uplifts people and believes in those who show their will to change, something very much reflected in how he wasn't going to wait to take the exams to be an astronaut and how he got his dream to see space in death because he never gave up on it even when he was done for.

Likewise, Saihara and co. couldn't have found a chance to discover the truth had they chosen either Hope or Despair at the end. It was only when they were more willing to die than to fall for another lie forced upon them that they got a shot at discovering the truth.
