90% of items are just stats, most passives are on hit damage procs or stat buffs, and there's only a handful of on use items to learn

Get Regen Master at 1. Get burning rage at 13. Get spinny hammer at 16.

Regen master is where most of your tankiness comes from, by going block you're wrecking your late game for a bit stronger early game. Get 13 and 16 damage talents to make DPS afraid to damage you. If they have to kite you half the time thats half as much damage you're taking.

I finally broke down and immediately uninstalled Dota 2 the other night over a bully in an unranked game.

New heroes costs up 750 gems and less, so you could save it for a hero you really want, that's the only practical use for gems.

Alternatively the featured legendary skins costs 500 gems, so you could get 2 good skins.

Gold is used for buying heroes or rerolling shit boxes. If you get at least 1 skin then it's not bad, even if you don't want the skin you may get the skin again eventually and receive shards instead. If you have a lot of skins there are more chances to get multiple duplicates which gives shards and you can use shards to buy the skin you want. So you may not get many shards at first, 40+ shards in a box is pretty good

Heroes costs 15k gold on release but they lower it to 10k after 2 weeks. They also discount heroes randomly up to 2k gold. You should buy some of the cheaper heroes with gold.

The 30 day stim pack is not bad either, but you should wait to get the free stim pack at level 10 to see if it's wort for you.
