Dammit. I tried too hard to make a good OP. Next time, I'll post an OP without spiders, so that you look everywhere but can't find it. And then, in the OP after the next OP, I'll hide a spider again, you'll be like "can't find the spider, someone else must've made that one!" but it'll be here, looking at you. Judging you.

>>175488952
Showing what horrible things people can do. But yeah, should've put the before picture too, but without the context, it would still have been cryptic.
At least the OP is Stellaris-related. I originally wanted to post Seven Kingdoms 2 or Age of Empires.

How high above the Core System cap do you go before the penalties really start hurting you?

I mean early to mid-game.
>>
>>175490172
I often spend most of the early game 2-3 above the cap. It's that uncomfortable spot where you need to expand but don't have the resources to lay the blueprint down for the sector yet.

I never take the ascension for core worlds though, it's always a huge waste later on.

You allowed an Early Space Age primitive civ to exist in your borders? Immediately invade them if it doesn't conflict with your ethos. If you haven't contacted any other civs, they won't get butthurt about it, and the stellar culture shock time is way lower than if you had invaded any other stage. You might even luck out and get species than can colonize planet types that aren't your main species'.

>>
>>175490954
Afterburners aren't worth it. Shield Capicators generally won't be on a corvette because they'll drive the price up and the ship probably won't last long enough once it starts taking hits for the regen to matter.
>>
>>175491126
It's more important then of course. I always set it at .75.

>>175490954
Afterburners. You should get rid of the shields period on them after cruisers become commonplace.
I'd even argue you should stop using them at all once you have a strong enough economy to support a destroyer fodder force. Torpedo corvettes are a meme.

ES1 only has a handful of very small random events that don't tie in to your faction in any way. Only actual bits of lore and story you get is from faction descriptions and wiki. If you dive into ES1 after EL you're going to be really disappointed in that regard.

ES2 on the other hand takes heavy notes from EL in relation to storyline, quests and lore, plus release version supposedly adds a global storyline as well.

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 if you want another "transport" game, same developer as ttd. You can get OpenRCT2 but I think you need the vanilla game, you can find a pirated GOG version somewhere. The whole point of corvettes is to be cheap cannon-fodder.

No amount of shield upgrades is going to let a corvette stand up against a heavy cruiser or battleship. Your best strategy is to make them cheap, fast, and packing as much firepower as you can cram into them and then just clusterfuck the enemy with them.

I'm roleplaying as an Auhoritarian/Spiritualist/Xenophobe faction that is into Slavery.

What should be my reaction when I encounter a pre-FTL species? Should I just outright conquer them? Or should I indoctrinate? Infiltrate? Enlighten and then vassalize?

I've only played Egalitarian/Materialist/Xenophile dudes that enlightened pre-FTL folks so I don't know the best procedure in this case. I'm guessing conquer? But will that have any repercussions?
>>
Is it possible to create a mega-federation by starting with the right ethos and liberating everyone so they get AI traits which have bonuses towards federation acceptance? Thinking of Fanatic Xenophile paired with regular Pacifist or Egalitarian and Democratic authority for Federation Builder AI type.

Or is Democratic Crusader better? They get less total opinion bonuses due to lack of mutual Xenophilia despite the mutual democracy bonus and also lower initial federation acceptance, but I'm wondering if they're more prone to voting yes on offensive liberating wars.
>>
>>175511664

You can play it a couple of different ways because you're set up for it to be one of the following:

Crush the Xenos
The Xenos are an innocent race, teach them the proper ways of worshipping <God>/<The State>
>>
>>175509572
There's Towns, Gnomoria, Rimworld...
But they all feel like Dwarf Fortress Lite.
>>
>>175511664
Depends on the age they are in. They get a debuff on them that lasts for a long time, the more primitive they are, the longer the duration. It's like -50% to all yields. So, if the planet isn't too good, you can't resettle them to somewhere else due to their habitability type, their traits are undesirable or it would take too long for them to become useful, forget they exist and just build an obs post with aggressive as its setting.

If all of those aren't true, invade them with about 3 assault armies and take the planet. Enlightenment isn't worth it unless you're pacifistic. Indoctrination before invasion however is a good idea if you don't want them to shit out antithetical factions.
>>

For the AI crisis to happen, you need Sentient AI, Synths and Synthetic Personality Matrix or something like that. Then, when your synths can produce rulers, they will ask for rights.

No. The real trigger is building synths, so even if you research them as long as you don't build any nothing bad will happen.

Most victory conditions in games seem kind of lame. There is either an arbitrary point of be the first to research the final technology and you win, or build this final wonder building first and you win. The problem is that if someone is just one turn behind you, they'll lose the game, but the other issue is that because they've been designed so you can't usually rush them too much, if you've been in a dominate position all game you just have to wait to finish the projects or checkboxes in order to count as winning the game.

What would be the best solution? Make it easier to get a 'scientific victory' but if anyone is close enough it doesn't count unless you either drop them down enough or reach a second victory condition? Make all victories based on score that is calculated each time you reach a milestone? Something else?

>>
>>175515485
Well, building a better economy/gitting gud would be a start, the AI is shit at planet management so it really shouldn't be outperforming you.

That said, if you can't do it that way for whatever reason, my usual tactic against shit like AE's where you feasibly can't match them in terms of ship quality or quantity, is to distract their fleet whilst I take out their orbital infrastructure and land legions of clones on all their planets, which strangles their ability to produce new ships.

If you can take out all their existing spaceports, hunt down their construction ships and successfully occupy all their planets, you've won, regardless of how powerful their fleet is relative to yours.

Regardless of what FTL you've got, everything goes to shit the moment one of your enemies develops jump drive.

Is there a reason not to have a single massive sector instead of multiple smaller ones? Every time I try to fuck around with smaller sectors with different specializations they invariably end up going completely bankrupt.

I really wish there was a finer-grain way to control sector AI behavior such as "respect tiles' resources only if they contain 2 or more of that resource." Every time I uncheck that fucking box, the sector AI goes completely batshit insane and pisses away minerals on building the most retarded shit imaginable.

>>
>>175525194
>Is there a reason not to have a single massive sector instead of multiple smaller ones?
Well the -25% effective resource production can be painful, but if you get to a point where you're already bursting with resources you probably won't mind seeing the +300 minerals drop down to ~+205, and then you can ignore the boring space shit and focus on building up your planets while letting the AI worry about building stations in the regions your science ships survey.
>>
>tfw the nomads show up a year after you get cruisers and offer you 15 of them with level 3 shields, armor, and arc emitters for only 3k minerals and 1k energy

Its almost as if building sphere is too hard some some one just gave up half way and decided that a dyson swarm is more practical.
>>
>>175525630

No shit it's more practical. Swarms can be as dense or spread out as you want, all gathering sunlight, more privacy for habitats, and if one of them gets destroyed you need to worry less about the whole thing going under. Plus space habitats don't need to worry about the immense structural stress that a giant ring of any material would take flying around the sun like that.

When I make a 4x game I'm going to have one of the arbitrary victory conditions completing a dyson swarm just to rake in those sweet spherefag tears.
>>
>>175524345
I wonder how the physics of a ringworld would work.
>>
>>175504836
That wouldn't stop the fact that if the target dies all of the following missiles are wasted. Either they need to track or they need to have splash damage. They don't outrange the later kinetic/energy weapons anyway.
>>
>>175525840
Theres some calculations floating around and they'd be really quite fragile, a relatively small nudge would destroy the entire thing.

Literally "Lmaoing at your sphere life" the victory condition.

Also massive system defense megastructures when. Or a oversized planetless Spaceport made for maximum ship production built over a star to use its materials via solar forge.

>>
>>175526773
Tile resources only matter early game really, unless there's some kind of local resource to exploit. Try to keep your biggest energy producing systems under your direct control, because they'll just go to waste in sectors. Sectors only need enough energy to be self-sufficient, anymore will just go to waste in the stockpile. Same is true for minerals, but mineral income is much easier to keep high compared to energy when you factor in fleet maintenance. For research, average it out so you have at least 3 research labs per colony. You can have less or more on some worlds just make that your baseline average.

And yeah there's a growth bonus for having a food surplus. Having like +50 food is as high as I bother making it. As you get better farms you can actually reduce the number of total farms you have to maintain that surplus.

Why do you think the ruined ringworlds have living metal on them? They're made of self repairing substances to offset that kinda shit.
>>
>>175533282

i did the growth time reduction but 10 % is not enough to colonize planets that are not the 3 starting types , now with trait that becomes + 20 or + 30 and now we are expanding

He asked about the physics of a ringworld, not half-assed explanations about how it might work in a video game. A civilization that builds a solid, non-sectioned ringworld is going to spend more resources repairing damage (catastrophic in scale mind you, not random cracks in the walls) than a ring world will give them in return.

The physics of a ringworld mandate a type of "stretchy" metal that can adjust to small-scale shifts without eventually shearing. Honestly you might be better off trying to grow a ringworld from some sort of engineered muscle mass.

One of the things this mod adds is the ability to make your home system be one of the FE ones and it adds a bunch, including a Sol system where Mars is a gaia world and Earth is a tomb world.

Starting on a size 25 gaia world is going to be kind of a huge advantage though.

It's fucking terrible. If you were able to get it earlier than the other ascension paths it would be better, but still shitty because like you said, pop growth a shit, SHIT, and you need to pay upkeep for them, (which would be fine if you could build pops simultaneously, or if synthetic empures got a massive reduction in pop construction time.)

Been trying to balance it with mods and dicking around with the console, but it's hard to make it not shit without making it overpowered.

I'm sure it will be fixed in the Stellarisâ„¢ HALâ„¢ DLC by Paradoxâ„¢ coming to Steamâ„¢ in July, 2019 for only $25.99

The UN in real life is shit and useless, but there have been some good implementations of UNs in past vidya.

SMAC was a particularly good example for Stellaris to follow. Rather than making it a "Get enough people to like you and you win! But actually you just need the biggest population..." like the mainline Civ series usually does it, having a UN style body deal with galaxy wide decisions would be pretty cool.

>opening up major hyperspace routes
>gang up on a faggot Awakened Empire together, regardless of past rivalries
>dealing with crisises together
>outlawing AI's and atrocities together
>maybe building some stupidly large not!Citadel together

There's a lot of good potential for a space UN, at the very least getting all the AI controlled empires to actually make a decision on an issue rather than waiting for the Unbidden to come to them.

The problem with this idea is that it basically assumes that we'd ever be a threat to them, or they would ever be a threat to us. They're no reason to assume anyone will be a threat, they will never reach your civilization or take its resources, it's totally pointless.

Humans do not ever need to, nor ever will, leave our solar system. We can build a cloud of habitats around the sun for countless centuries without anyone running out of space, energy, or room.

Any species with the capacity to become space fairing or capable of creating a relativistic kill missile would be as curious and intellectual as humans. Beaming lasers of data towards each other so we can learn about each other is a far better goal, and also logically apparent. Why destroy what you've been searching for? This image seems to imply that aliens would have no interest in speaking to humans, even though a huge percent of humans want to know so badly about aliens, even if they exist or not.

On the 1 August year 53 of the Exile calendar, three Poseidon class exploration ships start their journey..

Honestly, I hesitated upon suggesting it. I found it a bit expensive for what it proposed (just two factions), but at least it doesn't lie. You want a simple game, you have it. No bullshit mechanism about hidden bonuses like in AoE2, no bonus attack from the side or from behind, no hidden skill like in Battle Realms.
It's a straightforward game.

Its main interest is that if you buy the others 8Bits games, their factions are unlocked. That means you can fight the aliens from 8Bit Invaders while playing as the Undead from 8Bit Hordes.
It's a fun quirk, but if you're decent at RTS, you'll get bored easily, I fear.

best is hyperspace in a hyperspace only game mode

if you're playing any then hyperspace is a meme and it's either warp or wormhole

warp is comfy

wormhole is good

stellaris is a baby game so you don't need to minmax this shut
>>
>>175563551
You have a 50% chance of your leader being a woman. Because there are four phenotypes (white, black, asian, middle eastern), you have only a 25% chance to get a particular one.

So, basic math? You only have a 1 in 8 chance to get a white male on any leadership role. If your figures were correct, you'd actually be getting them twice as often as you should.

Just get the Separate Human Phenotypes mod. Won't stop you from getting female leaders, but at that point it's a coinflip instead.
>>
>>175564387
Hyperlanes are tedious as shit. 'strategic' or not, the lanes connect idiotically so some adjacent systems will be 12 jumps away.
>>
>>175564168
warp is slow but can travel to any close by star
hyperlanes is fast but can only travel only predetrmined routes
wormholes are slow to warmup, can jump big distances so quick to travel large distances, but you need a wormhole station in the sytem so are very limited to what systems you can go to until you build them

warp and wormhole are the best, warp good for early exploration
hyperlanes are shit unless you play hyperlanes only then it's ok

No, too much effort, too much distance, too little chance of success.

You're forgetting all the other dangerous species we've rendered extinct (Any predator bigger than a rodent or bird on the British Isles, for example)

Our first contact with an alien race is likely to be a brief "Oh fu-" as a RKV takes out our planet.

>>175566908

>>
>>175567010
You keep missing the point.

When i name my ship Pulaski, i know what it means, i can relate to it - i know the guy, i know the history behind him, who he was etc.
Even with some humanoid empires like Space Babes it was clear when you had ships called Minx, Tasty or Dominant.

But some starfish/anthropod/avian crap with some weird name tells me nothing and i really hate that.

Assuming evolution on our planet works similar to others, and that the universe doesn't turn out like Foster's The Damned trilogy (which is hilarious) then he's right.

There's always the possibility that our planet is spectacularly unique.
>>
We are likely among the first, if not the first, technological species in the galaxy. We are at the beginning of history. Everyone else is probably a million or so of year behind us and we will guide them into the future, if you don't consume every resource in the galaxy within 10,000 years. Also FTL is impossible.
>>
>>175568561
Why would a hypothetical alien biology care about your assumptions? And why americans think that evolution is a thing that happens? Evolution is the model used to explain the bio-diversity and biological history of earth, no the thing happening itself.
>>
>>175568116

And I highly doubt you can even reach space by being a hyper aggressive monkey.

Given what we know about the requirements for multicellular life capable of technological development, which admittedly is not much, you'd expect any other species to have developed on planets fairly similar to Earth, in solar systems much like Sol.

Too much more massive and you'd never get rockets into orbit. Too much less massive and the planet wouldn't retain a magnetosphere long enough for life to evolve sufficiently (like Mars).

Even shit like needing at least one large, Lunar-type satellite might be neccesary. If we'd got hit by a few more comets during the planet's development, the Earth might be completely covered in water, which would make technological development to spacefaring levels extremely difficult or impossible.

In a system with fewer gas giants to sweep up debris, the rocky inner planets would be bombarded too frequently by meteors for advanced life to survive. If Sol was more energetic, radiation would sterilise even magnetically shielded planets, less energetic and the habitable zone would be close enough that planets in it would be tidally locked, leading to violent storms across the entire terminator that would suck so much debris into the atmosphere that the planet would exist in a state akin to a permenant nuclear winter.
