>>
>>175452219
/wowsg/, /lisg/, /hsg/, /tesg/, /csgog/, /nsunsg/, /ssg/, /ksg/, /vsg/, /rsg/, /hotsg/, /gsg/.
All of these contain sg in their names, ssg is already taken, literally any other name even remotely related to starsector would be better.

what does it mean really when a ship is lowtech, midline or high tech?
>>

It does matter because two generals are not supposed to have the same name. One will get deleted.

>>

theres no reason for it to be /sg/ and not /stsg/ when /sg/ is taken and hard to search for.

Its convenient for other people you fucking autist, if I can look up stsg or any other name even 1 millionth of a second earlier than sg its objectively better.
>>
>>175452927
You go after inner-sector bounties that don't require you to travel 200 light years.
>>
>>175452982
All of them are really far away though. I always choose the closest.
>>
>>175453013
You are aware of the fact that there are two kinds of bounties, right?
>>
>start playing campaign
>get to part where you recover derelicts around tetra
>tetra is literally orbiting so fast I can't actually catch it even with max burn
what the fuck man
I painstakingly waited for it to pass to get into its orbit but I can literally reach one trailing derelict before it speeds away from me again
>>
>>175452927
Lucrative salvaging = abandoned stations and domain probes etc floating around in distant systems. Ignore the debris fields. Recovering damaged ships is not profitable directly (i.e you cannot liquify them profitably though you can obviously use them instead of buying new ships).

AI cores come from the REDACTED enemies in distant systems with warning beacons. The beacons range from yellow (easy) to red (hard). These enemies can be farmed indefinitely and even used to hoard supplies and fuel because they drop so much.

I'm 100% sure this patch will see some major economical rebalancing either by the developer or a mod soon.
>>
>>175452982
System wide faction bounties give garbage money and are only useful if you're completely broke.

>>175454738
And yeah you need some machinery and a shitload of crew for both surveying and salvaging. Your first goal after getting 2-4 combat frigates (for abandoned station defenses) should be a mule or other small freighter. I assume you already have a tanker. At some point you should be able to combine bounties and/or exploration missions with the other stuff for crazy money.
>>
>>175455239
Combine the search with missions or other profitable activities, obviously youre gonna go broke real quick if you fly around with a whole fleet while making no money.

>AI cores come from the REDACTED enemies
False. I've recovered many Alpha cores from Domain survey ships and motherships. The defense systems are piss easy to kill too. Although I was pretty disappointed that the mothership exploded after I took out the puny weapon pods. I wanted to salvage it whole, is there a way?

Also, I learned that even if a system has only one planet, it can still have loads of probes, and they will all be in close proximity to each other because the possible orbits (star, planet, jump point, dust rings) are few. I recovered six or seven probes from one such system, all in the range of a single scan.

>>
>>175461863
>false

No, it's entirely true though you could say it's a partial truth. You/he were told to salvage anyway so no damage done.
>>
>>175461863
Note: Survey ships and motherships always seem to have many times longer orbits so they wouldn't be discovered as easily as surveying a planet. Often I only pick them up with a long range scan. HOWEVER, the probes that are found much more easily will tell you if there's a survey- or mothership in the system or nearby, so don't just quickly tap through the salvage process! The message is stored in your fleet reports for a while.
>>
>>175462251
>>175462391
Yeah, there are a couple of issues with modules right now (hopefully they'll get resolved in 0.8.1). That's why Scy hasn't updated yet.
>>
>>175462251
But if you want them you have to add one of the variants to your fleet rather than the bare hull.
>>
Yeah I just figured it out. If you want to stop your Carriers from being suicidal, don't give them any escort. That way they stay way back because I guess they realize they have no protection to go to the front.

So, uhh...

You can install hullmods on each individual pod of the battlestation. And shield mods work.

So now you have hardened+accelerated+extended shields on it, along with flux distributers/resistant conduits/flux coils. And each pod counts as a frigate, so the OP price of hullmods is really low.

>>175465079
It's also bad because I can't install improvised hangars on all of them and have 16 fighter wings.

Onslaught can take on a Paragon 1vs1.

The only disadvantage the Onslaught has comes from its insane fuel cost, which is 15 per day, whereas mid-and hightech have 10 at max.

TL does about as much damage with longer range and has EMP to boot, and the latter can bypass shields if the target has high flux. Plasma is good and all but I'd say the Lance is the best in practical terms.

>>175474637

TT bounties will always have high tech ships. You can recover all kinds of crazy shit from their fleets, including Astrals and Auroras. If you have a lot of money you can restore them and remove their D-Mods, or just invest into the Industry tree and never worry about degraded stuff ever again.

>>175474728

Outside of the Paragon you rarely get what you want. I find there's more mid tech stuff in their ports than actual high tech.

I presume so since the planet they spawn on is only generated when starting a new game. Rule of thumb is to restart for every new mod.

>>175475821

You may have noticed that ships comes in either dark red/orange, white/beige, or with a bluish tint. Lowtech, midtech and hitech respectively. Mechanically lowtech have only ballistic slots and poor shields but excellent armor and hull, midtech have a mix between energy and ballistic slots and have a equal mix with armor/shield ratio, whereas hitech only have energy slots and generally poor armor but excellent shields and generators.

There are reasons lorewise why things are like this but the lore and setting hasn't evolved since 2011. Sooner or later Alex will have to update it somehow.

You get 400 armor on a ship that already has around 1750. Get the right combat skills and you get like 200 extra. You're going to be virtually immune against kinetic weapons and that extra armor will help a lot since the Onslaught thrives in the thick of it.

Onslaught is not about catching fighters. You use Burn Drive to get into firing position, then just outrange most things with your integrated targeting unit.

Yes, java is literally THAT bad.

This game is eating up probably 2-3 orders of magnitude more compute power and memory than necessary just because it's programmed in java. Java is for shitty internet games you play in a browser for 5 minutes because the developer didn't know any better and who cares it took 5 days to make and oh boy look at all these libraries and documentation.

Just the fact that adding mods can use up all of someone's RAM fucking amazes me.

There is a special spawn that occurs when you have trade missions.
They will spawn adjacent wherever you hit hyperspace, and demand as many goods as you're carrying to meet the mission.
I've never had this spawn comm before attacking when I had hostile reputation.

Personally I'd switch the assault chain with a flak cannon , or better yet, dual flak, and remove the two flaks that are on the large mounts and replace them with something else. Cyclone launchers are beastly, but it might be better with annhiliators instead to keep a constant pressue. Believe it or not, but four of those pods will keep enough pressure on a Paragon allowing you to 1vs1 it.

It's a jet of charged particles traveling at 80%+ lightspeed being ejected from the poles of a neutron star.

The way the game depicts them isn't really accurate though. First, the jets are usually perpendicular to the orbital plane, not parallel. Second, they have variable rotation speeds and a lot of them rotate several times a second. (up to hundreds/thousands of times per second, which is just nuts)

Even the slowest pulsar in this video is like an order of magnitude faster than the ones depicted in-game.

Also, pulsar's are kind of rare. Given the size of the map in-game which is like, maybe 300ly and probably less, you'd be lucky to have a single pulsar at all, let alone multiple.

Same deal with the black holes, and the vast majority of the stars should be red dwarfs (like 50%, easily), and dwarf systems should have virtually all planets tidally locked to the star. The only exception would be things like moons orbiting gas giants and the like.

the space genre has been total ass for like 2 decades

Also look into ksp and space engineers

elite dangerous is ass, so is the original elite it was based on. 4x games never got much better than master of orion 2 except graphically, and absolutely nothing out there comes close to matching the writing/plot of star control 2, which is just sad because while it's good, it shouldn't have been a bar so high that nobody else could surpass it. when it comes to 4x the more modern ones are so content starved (endless space/stellaris), or just so poorly put together (stellaris) you almost don't even want to bother.

For 3d space fighter shootan you got independence war 2 (very very similar to star sector, actually), freespace, and some multiplayer version of freespace or something that I think microsoft worked on, which was pretty fun.

Aurora for dwarf fortress in space autism with a UI that is LITERALLY 20 years old from the dos era and quite possibly one of the single worst UI's I've ever had the misfortune of using in my entire life, it's even worse than DF's which at least gets by on usable hotkeys. Aurora is in that transition period from CLI and hotkey commands to nonsensical GUI designed by an idiot, except it was made 5 years ago instead of 20 or 25 years ago. It's an abject lesson in why we don't let the engineer/linux types do their "functional over form" UI thing - they always think rote memorization and abstract concepts are "functional", rather than simplicity and intuitiveness. e.g. they design for someone like themselves who've used the UI for ten years and not for clueless idiot retards with room temperature IQ that you need to actually design for.

Trying my fucking hardest in this doomed fight. Think I did well in that engagement but those bloody pirates don't quit.
I made progress by pretty much sacrificing that wayfarer-class ship to draw off a few of their annoying little frigates.

I would be fine with a fleet wipe but I'm going to lose at least 6/8 AI cores, two class-IV survey datas and a class-V survey data. This is very early game so the cash from those is very much needed.

>>
>>175506276
Go for the ones without ammo counts. There's few rare missiles types that say they have "auto-loaders" so they can fire infinitely. They'll have a slower fire-rate but being able to spit out a missile whenever you need it is so much more useful than being restricted to an inexplicably tiny rack.
They scrapped ammo for the ballistic weapons, and that was a good decision. I never bothered to use them because you were guaranteed to run out of bullets in any fight. And you could actually bait enemies to waste all their ammo, then just mop them up with ease.

I bet they'll scrap ammo for missile launchers, soon enough. Either that or something like 1 reload each minute.
>>
>the flux dissipation rate from power modulation 3 doesn't apply to flux dissipation from vents
Why
>>
>>175507632
infinite ammo for missiles is a meme

You will virtually never use more than 20-30 in a fight with any single launcher, and that's really pushing it. Most of the time just 10-15 is enough.

So anything with that many missiles might as well be an infinite launcher. Especially combined with the extra ammo mod.
>>
>>175507884
The ones with tracking will have 5 missiles on the rack, at best. Dumbfire missiles are different.
>>
>>175506276
>never seems to fire missiles unless someone overloads and then she blows her entire load
That's how the AI uses Harpoons and it's a very good use for them. It might be overkill but it's a very reliable kill and that's important.

Annihilators and Swarmers the AI likes to just fire whenever they're off cooldown, no matter what they're shooting at, or if they had better weapons available for the job. Kind of a waste but they have a lot of ammo and the HE damage is good so it works out ok.

Sabots the AI likes to use on attack runs against Destroyers and above, very rarely against Frigates.

Torpedoes are weird, the AI just throws away as means to try to overload flux even though torpedoes only do 50% to shields.

Rest of the missiles AI just uses whenever they can.

Capital ships can extend range even further with mods

For example, targeting core mod means a tactical laser has 2000 units range, and with optics mod it's 2400 units range

If you doubled the default ranges, you'd get 4000 and 4800 respectively

I think I'd get rid of the targeting core mod if I increased default weapon ranges, for the most part I think the reason it exists for capitals in the first place is due to them being so big they take up like a quarter of the beam weapon's range with their hull just to start with.

That's kind of a problem with the current trading build. I have two Atlas-class and they can buy out pretty much all the markets.

There just aren't enough markets and you can't shift any of them. It's pretty obvious he's put in the skeleton for economic brinkmanship, but it's disappointing that you can't yet. It should be possible to upgrade and degrade markets.

I hope Outposts are basically supply-providers, so even small fleets can daisy chain through the Sector and starve when you find out pirates have ravaged an important link.

Newfag here, when a ship says it'll cost x recovery cost, that means it costs that amount no matter the length of deployment right?

Time to take the day off of work.

It's better to start a new-game so the mod faction can be loaded up with the rest of them and the AI can adjust to it.
If you try to throw a new faction into an existing game, it really confuses the poor computer.

>>

Again I have a very hard time believing that.
With my specs as I said I get well above 100 fps for most battles and the really intense ones can bring it down to 60fps sometimes.
But all of that is with mods, such as the graphics mod that actually is more taxing.

Do you have the JRE updated, to use more than 1GB of RAM?
My game is set to 2GB on start with maximum of 4GB of RAM usage.
You mentioned you had 16GB but I am going to guess you didn't apply this fix and are using only 1gb of 16.

A dev going, "NO ITS MY VISION IT HAS TO LOOK THIS WAY I DONT CARE WHAT PLAYERS THINK" is pretty much exactly the kind of behaviour you get out of autistic bronies and """artists""".

Every indie gamedev I've seen has done this about something. Some little pointless feature that some player innocently asked for improvement and the dev goes full retard defending his decision, attacking the player, the playerbase, calling everyone idiots for disagreeing with his perfect special snowflake vision.

And there's always a few sycophants who come along to suck the dev's dick, too.

The giant turrets look dumb and I don't need to see these turrets to know what weapons a ship is using. I'm not so stressed for time in this game that I need to make decisions in 150 milliseconds or else. I can fucking pause the game and zoom in on ships if I want. I can select the ships to read their weapon loadout mid-battle. I can even open up their full stats page and read their description and loadout.

I don't need the giant fuckhueg guns on my frigates. It looks dumb and I get all the information I need about weapons without looking at the turrets - no less because I don't even know what half the fucking guns look like in the first place, and because it's easier to read the listed weapons than it is to pick out every gun on a ship visually.
>>
>>175579143

>>
>>175578746
All you'd need to do is give fleets momentum and mass and planets a gravitational field that pulls on that mass. It should actually be pretty easy and I think is already in use on stars and black holes.

Getting the AI to react to it properly, and making it easy for the player to actually slingshot around stuff instead of frustrating to control, is something that would require a fair bit of playtesting I bet.
>>
>>175579143
everything you just wrote was hyberbolic bullshit centered only on your own experience of the game but ok

if you dont agree with the dev's vision but care enough to keep playing, just mod the game

I can't find it good for anything. It doesn't have the shield or armor strength to fight anything bigger than a frigate while still lacking the maneurvability to actually hit one.
If it ever tries to face a destroyer, it'll lose its shields before it can scratch the enemy.

Looks like it's just supposed to duck in and out while decent ships do the actual work.
Wasted slot, really. I'd rather just one extra decent ship instead.

the falcon isn't a brawler, you want to keep enemies at range.

>>
>>175605557
It's meant to out-range frigates and destroyers and build up their flux before they get within range to retaliate, use beams and long range ballistics

Not a very interesting ship for the player but the AI handles it well
