There are about 15 players 58-60 who've logged in in the last 2 days, everyone else is still levelling up. All the OG Salty Dogs like Grimlic and Trux and etc have moved on. I got a few Placeholder/Comfy players to come across though. Looking like 40 man raiding is a long ways off still. Guild isn't dead though. If you are fine waiting and don't want to deal with normies (dank buddz collective) or the nonsense on alliance with MoH, still a home for players on horde side Elysium.

Depends on the grinding.
The absolute fastest is questing with grinding at times. All of the speedrun questing guides tell you to kill shit as you go and have portions where flat out grinding is superior to questing.
It depends on class, spec, gear, and the mobs. A warrior wouldn't have a lot of fun grinding a camp of disarming mobs, for example.
It also depends on the server. Even now on elysium where there isn't a huge amount of people leveling, most of the good spots will still be taken up and competition means shitty xp.
If you google grinding spots for 1.12 there is a big list, some are great, some aren't as great. I like spots that have drops that complement whatever my profession is, or has mining nodes that respawn. Chests can also be a bonus.
Either way, if you kill shit as you go and try to minimize downtime as much as possible, you'll level at a good rate.

What names? They'd have to be very good for real cash, but selling them for gold is doable.
As far as advertising, you can do it several ways:
epicnpc and ownedcore forums
spamming discord (throwaway accts since they will ban you)
leveling throwaways and spamming /world (same as above). You could also embrace your inner chink and get a mailing addon.
Elysium and wowservers reddits - again, they will get removed but the mods on wowservers are lazier so you may get some eyeballs there. As a bonus the flurry of shitpost replies will attract attention, as nearly anyone who posts there gets raging boners at the opportunity to be the first to type something edgy/snarky/memey.
Finally, can also try to get buyers here but know that no one here has gold or cash for anything as they are only interested in (you) dollars.

How does vanilla gear work in terms of pvp and pve being separate things? Is it possible to gear up by pvp and 5 mans or is it necessary to raid in order to be able to handle pvp?

depends. if you're a healer, you don't really need much gear. just whatever questing greens/blues you have at 60 will be adequate for early ranks and you can do pretty well. if you're a warrior, you'll want at least some of your preraid bis if you want to take part in premades for higher ranks, otherwise grinding for the blue set is possible but a pain in the ass

most of the best gear available right now is 5 man gear. since there's no resilience in vanilla you use stam as your survivability stat. basically just replace some of your pure dps gear (str/agi/spell damage/healing) with some more hybrid statted gear, especially if you're cloth. later on raid gear is pretty much superior to what pvp has to offer until they update the pvp gear where it becomes equal to BWL/AQ40 gear and after that naxx gear completely shit on the pvp stuff either way.

so to answer your question: if you're not planning on getting r14 gear you will need to pve to stay competitive in future patches.
