Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

So hey, the /vg/ League 8 has opened up signups. We've taken part in quite a few leagues now, last time getting screwed out of advancing by goal differential of all things, so I figured you guys might want to have another go? I've got an actual computer now instead of a potato, so I can probably do more testing than I've done before since PES won't lag and I can turn the speed up. Downside is, I've been catching up with the last decade of gaming since I got my new computer, so I haven't played much Dominions at all.

Oh, and in case you don't know what I'm talking about, the VGL is a competition between /vg/ generals where teams of AI-controlled memes play virtual divegrass/soccer/football/whateveryouwannacallit. Alright, so first I look at their rec anywhere battlemages. For MA Man, they're 195 gold for N1+1?AN+1?AN, so a good number of them will be N2, a slightly less good number of them will be N3 or A2. 195 gold for a tstriker/elespammer isn't great, but it's...doable. The N3s can cast any number of big battlefield-wide nature buffs, so that's what I would focus on, sort of like a worse Pangea. The Cap onlies follow this trend, and can also occasionally cast Storm, so it's N buffs and tstrike/elespam for flavour.

Next I look at what troops they have that are worth buffing. For MA Man, that would be...nothing. Logrian Cavalry and Tower Guards would probably be the only things I'd recruit (jesus christ 30 and 13 gold respectively), the Logrian Cavalry as actual killy things, tower guards as blockers. Mass Protection/Wooden Warriors will make them into decently high prot troops, and uh...Howl I guess will distract the enemy? Fucking hell MA Man is a mess.

OK memes aside heres my take.

Cap only mage can do storm and whatever N spells you want. Its ok.

Logrian wise man is easily recruitable. 1/4 can do magma, 1/4 can spam E spells, 1/4 can do RoS and 1/4 will be useless. You should probably get magic3 for those guys. With enough of them you are bound to amass enough FE and E2 to use in battle.

Daughters are useless, avoid.

Mothers are ok when you have the gold to buy them. I wouldn't unless really rich.

The sacred has very solid protection for MA but it is very slow. It could be situationally useful for chopping big targets.

Knights of Avalon are solid but verye xpensive both in resources and gold. Wouldnt get them really. Other cav also seems useless.

Your main combat troops would be foresters and longbowmen. You can do both flaming arrows and wind guide so that covers your early game. For mid game you need to buff foresters with protection, fog warriors and give them extra killing power with strength if giants and weapons of sharpness. Then they are poor mans revelers.

I would take F4 on pretender to make sure you get those flaming arrows, perhaps some kind of awake. Dragon maybe.

Having just tested vanilla man, >>174815593 is very right. Taking f4 on a dragon is a solid option for early expansion and ensures flaming arrows which will help you out a lot against early aggression you would undoubtedly face when you play Man. The extra expansion offered by the dragon is also key since Man expands shittily, and you have easy access to N so you can cure it's afflictions later on. Magic/Growth scales are good, you could take growth 2 magic 2 with 1 point into cold. Alternatively an awake boar or earth snake would with e4 would give you a nice bit of reinvig for your sacred mages and expand better than a dragon. A thrice horned boar with e4 can have mave magic 3, earth 3, and prod 1 while being awake which would help a ton. You would have to rely on random chance to get fire arrows but with an awake boar expanding it wouldn't be a nightmare. Whatever you do make sure you test what your awake expander can and can't deal with when it comes to fighting indy troops.

Knights of Man are fantastic cavalry in the MA but they are expansive, if you have the money they're solid to recruit. Your main force will be mostly longbowmen and spear infantry though. Wardens make solid stealthy raiding forces since they'll easily smash most PD, just set them as far forward as possible and set to attack closest. This would obviously be during wars though when you have at least 2 forts up and can afford to spend some money on a scary raiding party, and you shouldnt make more than 2 groups of 10 or so to smash through most PD.

But it's still shit.

It also makes everything they have slightly better - more A2 mothers, more A3 crones, cheaper cavalry (logrians go from 30->20, which is pretty big) but the most important change is the addition of the national buff spells. Leaving out the UW nations: Eriu, Machaka, TC, Marignon, Xibalba (on a low cave map), C'tis, Arco, Shinuyama (provided unlimited Immortal works got fixed), Pythium, and seemingly Bandar Log (BL does shit for reasons I don't fully understand).

Summod buffs them harder than any other nation in MA, and harder than any nation period sans EA Abysia. The low research AOE 5 double buff spells let Knights of Avalon steam roll over quite a few nations with Luck/Twist fate/Legions/SoG, and later an AOE 5 0 gem wave warriors+weapons of sharpness is incredibly good.

Bewitchment is also a very good spam spell for A1N1s against anything not mindless.

How is this fair? They're pretty much unmatched bang for buck. It's not like Ulm's troops are awful either. Their sacreds are bad but Steel Maidens are very good and are stealthy to boot.

most all thugs use some magic. Pans can easily cast a ton of self buffs like iron skin, enlarge, strength of giants, reinvig and regeneration, and they have enough health that they'll survive. They can also get frost brands from dryads with W random, though you'll have to find the gems for it. They're far from ideal, but they're more than capable of taking out most PD people will set up, and they're even recruit anywhere which is nice.

Your Smiths only cost 105 each and provide 9 research each. They're also your site searchers and battle mages. They can also craft Lightless Lanterns and Owl Quills for 3 gems each. 1 gem each with a hammer. Your shamans can craft Skull Mentors. EA Ulm are research gods. There aren't many factions that are anywhere close to being this good at research. A rare few are better.

Research goals are super hard to get right since they heavily depend on what you're facing. If you're getting rushed by small sacreds then Earth Meld is really important to get early. If you're not fighting anyone early on you should be going for Construction to grab the research boosters. If you're going to be fighting a major war in the first few years you want Maws of the Earth, Blade Wind, Destruction, Earthquake.. Summon Earthpower is of course important. Being the first to grab Rain of Stones gives you a massive advantage and is an "I WIN" spell against bad players.

EA Ulm is incredibly versatile and as such it is incredibly It Depends.

Considering how well bats were doing at first, it would've been suicidal not to attack them in the long run. After the Anti-Bat Alliance collapsed and bats seemed weaker I was willing to leave them alone, but they immediately went back to raiding my territory with 150 or so bats while killing Niefelheim. So Baby-RNGesus is over. Marverni takes the win. It was a long and stupid game.

In the beginning 2 nations stalled turn1 and Vanheim and Mictlan were swallowed by Fomoria and Berytos. Sauro started to stale and was swallowed by Maverni and TC. Helheim also stalled and was swallowed by Maverni and Fomoria. TC stalled was swallowed by Maverni and Fomoria. So in the end it was just Maverni vs Fomoria. I was able to make 1 fully kitted golem every 2 turns so Fomoria started losing every battle everywhere. Gift from heavens killed all his kitted SCs and then AIed. From there on it was a slog to finish the game with throne points.

Whoever hosted Baby_rngesus I hate you for leaving basically turn 20 and letting nations stale.

With an awake expander you want to meet a threshold of "captures most provinces," and there are several ways to get there. You want growth and magic typically as shinu. You can take some sloth. Growth for your old mages, and magic since you'll be very very reliant on your old mages casting spells. What other nations play like EA Ulm? Their mages are strong, cheap, and good at research. Early on you can mass them for battle magic. The other ages of Ulm. If you mean in EA, Caelum has decent research mages that can do some stuff in battle. The only expander Shinuyama has access to is the Earth Snake, which can go e4 and take growth 3 and magic 3 with a dominion of 7. itll expand fine just like that. you can put 2 or 3 points into sloth to take some order or luck if you want. you dont want to take disorder 3 or cold 3, especially not both since they'll hurt your income way too much and your mages are expensive and your troops take gold more than resources. if you want a rainbow then make them dormant since there's no point in them being awake really, and don't give them dom 9 unless you really need it.

But you must consider the following: a d5w2 (or whatever the required paths are) mage is a very valuable asset in both RP and casting. For the turn that it was cast another global or something else could've been cast instead or just simple RP. As therodos which already get freespawn it's not that big of a deal. Especially since the freespawn from this global is the shit sacreds that they have. The only good side to this global I can see is the freespawn mage (which I have yet to get a single spawn of ;_;). I think it would've been better to save for Foul air or something more worth my time.

As Therodos, don't you use Turmoil-Luck scales? You get some income thanks to that, enough to build a fort when you need it. Pic related was my territory as Therodos at the end of a game around turn 75. As you can see, I had 10 forts and 2 of Abysia's forts were in fact mine and had been conqueered just a few turns ago. I'm not even a great player, and it looks like kind of a normal amount of forts. Of course, many nations can get more, but it's still more than enough for our purpose here.

How does the spell work exactly by the way? It's from Magic Extended right? Cause it's not listed on the inspector. You said it's a global? Why do you need forts then? Is it, like, 1 W gem per turn and fort you own, + a freespawn chance each turn in each fort?

I posted earlier asking for EA Caelum pretender choices. Someone suggested an awake Azi.

I'm not a fan of having to take high enough dom that him getting gibbed isn't as threatening, so I'm going to pass on that. I've tried out both of the following and am leaning on the demilich, who can teleport and cause shenanigans dying comfortably within his own dominion.

Someone else suggested not taking sloth, so you could mass troops, but Caelums troops are pretty garbo all around, so I'm not sure what that really does. I'm generally not a fan of Luck+, so misfortune could be at -1 or so, especially with the Order scales.

Caelum seems to really want to have as many forts as possible to recruit as many mages as possible to research as fast as possible so they can raid as much as possible as often as possible. I think this build does that, giving bonuses to the eagle kings.

Actually, for Caelum it's not that hard (compared to other nations)

One of your Greater Daeva is D5, so you can just get him and shove two death boosters on him.

Many of the other Greater Daeva are D4, which you can get to D5 easily with the artifact misc death booster (requires D/B, which is also available on one of the Yata as well as one of the Daeva. Failing everything else, you can just empower a D4 Greater Daeva once.

D5 pretender with full slots is cheaper than any of the above, of course, but you probably want to look at picking up extra tart summoners if the game goes long enough.

Actual damage isn't reduced for most spells (Heat from Hell and the cold equivalent do get reduced, though). However, the secondary effects (chill/freeze for cold, burning for fire) wear off much faster in opposed scales. Those can often be surprisingly impactful.

I hope you know that this is a terrible strategy. If you're not doing it just for fun, you should probably reconsider.

Kailasa has sacred archers. They're not great, though, too expensive and too hard to mass. Also your units are very low-armor, which is bad when you're throwing around lots of arrows.

LA T'ien Ch'i has sacred horse cavalry with bows. They have the same high cost/low availability issues that plague Kailasa's archers, but they are actually pretty good at range because their arrows cause fear.

Really, your best bet for a sacred-archer focused strategy would be some natgen nations. I've seen cheap sacred rec-anywhere crossbows before, which might make this strategy somewhat viable. If you want vanilla nations, LA T'ien Ch'i is the least bad option.

The main factors for how good an archer is are how many arrows you can get in the air, and how much damage they do.

Sacred archers are very hard to mass, because they're cap-only, usually much more expensive than normal archers, and recruitment is limited by dominion strength. They don't have a sufficient increase to damage or rate of fire (even when blessed) to make up for being far less numerous than standard archers.

Compare 300 composite bows to 100 Yavana in a fight, and you'll see how much sheer volume of fire matters.

His Bane Venom guys are in my best provinces, knocking out about 20 income per turn. I am small, and that's income I'll never get back. I also don't have Thaum 7 because why would I? And need to save my W gems.

Depends how many mages he has.

If he's willing to expend enough resources he can make a fort basically unbreakable through a direct attack. In that case you should drop bane venom charms, Murdering Winter, Flames from the Sky, and other such spells on his fort (or just sit your own medium-size army with 3+ RoS casters outside and continue taking all his land).

If it's a relatively low number of mages, you can probably just send in a SC.

Also, you can also still 'win' in gems even if you lose the sacrificial guy you send in. A 4 path mage can be bought with gold, given armor to survive RoS (5 gems, 3 with hammer), and given 2 gems. That's a total of 5-7 gems, which you can spread around a variety of paths. Your enemy will be dropping 10E for those 5 RoS casts, plus extra to buff his troops to survive it. Keep doing that and raid his land, and you'll quickly exhaust his earth gem supply.

Weird Marverni/bless rush hybrid. Generally you don't want to go too all in on bless (N9 or W9 is fine), use the sacreds to expand quickly and possibly gank someone, then invest in coastal infrastructure for your good mages and mediocre human chaff. E/S is great and versatile, giving you buffs/debuffs from communioned earth magic and also some evo options, even if the mages are inefficiently priced compared to, say, TC's geomancers. You can continue to use your cap sacreds as either elites in fights or as raiders with cap-elf leaders, and also mix in big air magic to your E/S squads. E/S has no problems dealing with elites in any flavor, you can either use matrices to round 1 earthquake or cap mages to RoS v mage/skelly balls, and use amphib stuff for coastal harassment to supplement your stealthy raiding.

They count as independent forces, so the idea with them is to not win the battle but to kill the enemy army. Same concept as horror bombing.

They're not very strong against troops with magic weapons, but against mundane chaff their invulnerability and ethereal are pretty strong. Their best feature by far however is their fear. I've used them effectively before, and enjoy using them as an anti raiding measure if I have a province with a fair bit of PD because sometimes your pd commander will survive and win it for you.

Depends on the thug, but if you're suggesting a vanjarl their wraith swords will counterattack the mistform after the first strike. Definitely an easy way to mass troops with magic weapons if you lack them nationally. I would just worry about them hitting it enough.

If you have the time wights with some mage support might do the job with their cold aura depending on your dominion or a spell to tie them down.

R'yleh is very fun and strong as long as it isn't late age, LA r'yleh is interesting but kind of awful to play. MA Ys is very strong, especially if they don't have to fight for the water. They're basically underwater elves. MA Pelagia is one of the best, they have a wide path variety and plenty of land units. LA Atlantis is actually a top tier nation and probably the easiest, though they start on land and have to expand to the water. My favorites are R'yleh and Ys though, all ages.

Aside from claiming thrones, leading armies and casting Sermon of Courage/Fanaticism (with crystal matrix), they're really good at banishing undead. Divine Blessing is also v useful for your Shamen (sacred but without priest levels) and Sacred Serpents, especially if you went for a N9 bless (turbocommunions with regenerating Soul Vortex'd Shamen slaves guarded by regenerating Sacred Serpents and S-random Sauromancers as masters).

Please don't take an N9 bless on EA C'tis unless you know what you're doing. It's really bad for anything other than the communion niche benefit thing, and C'tis doesn't normally field communions at all. You can still use communions to boost up low levels of paths you normally don't get access to so that you can turn your E1 witch into a big buff caster or sosuch, but one doesn't need a turbocommunion to do so.

C'tis fields communions as a side thing for larger fights or to cast a specific spell rather than as a core tactic. You use them to boost to cast larger
battlefield spells rather than as a battery (compared to Rus, Nief, Marv, Sauro, etc).

Personal regen does not make the communions stable with more than two casters (3 with Enlarge), so you're definitely not going to use it for supporting a bunch of skelly spammers unless you're just looking to sacrifice some shamans to get more casts out for a hard fight.

They all look really homogenous and I have no idea which ones I should be recruiting. you should just be playing another nation. but if you have to play atlantis, then your best unit really is the war lobster for expansion. once you get some provinces war shamblers are better to recruit more of if you have the resources since they can leave the water, but if you have the money war lobsters will expand very nicely. if you have shit scales for whatever reason then idk what to tell you

Shambler guard are also fine if youre resource hurt, they don't lose out on much. for some filler its a good idea to grab some light infantry too since theyre cheaper and okay troops. without war lobsters youll have a harder time no matter what though

Since the sacreds look bad, I was going to go for either a dormant utility magic build with great scales or a cheap awake of some kind, so I expect to have a ton of scales to work with to make sure I have enough money/prod for expansion.

Does Atlantis need any non-national magic? The only thing I was really looking into was the E/S crosspath and maybe death

W/D and W/N crosspaths on your pretender are worth it, since they allow you to spend W gems (you're going to have a shitton of those - 5 out of cap alone, and 1/4 of your Kings are literally base W5, so Maelstrom is super easy to cast) on Kokythiads and Naiads to break you into their respective paths. Sitesearch with Voice of Tiamat, which should give you at least some A gems, summon Faeries later on. That's how you get full (except B, I guess) diversity. Not sure if E/S crosspath alone is worth bothering with - your casters are super powerful already and you don't need to plug them into communions and you probably won't have enough spare pearls for Golems anyway.

Remember to take Magic scales and fort your entire coast to spam super cheap labrats there. Beeline to evo7 for Acid Storm.

Reef Warrior is probably the best troop to mass. Better than War Shambler against most things.

With maybe some Shambler Guard early on since they're less resource expensive.

MA atlantis would like an awake expander. Earth serpent is the obvious choice, but if you want to be really thematic the kraken isnt awful if you boost its s for safety and e to 5 for the extra protection. The dagon will work but get a ton of wounds. Magic diversity would help a little bit, but you have solid mages. Kings of the deep can cast a ton of good spells.

If you went with a dormant one some N and D would be good, that'd let you summon lamia queens and and naids and kokythiads for a lot of diversity, the draikana is a good chassis for that.

Make sure you take cold 3 if you do mess with your scales that way, as ice elementals are the shit

I wouldn't go with the Snek, since as you say you want Cold 3. It will expand fine regardless, yes, but afterwards it'll die so much easier due to exhaustion in just about any fight.

The WE 2-headed regenerating Wyrm expands equally well but is a lot better later on.


Also maybe Ghost King could be made into something workable, since you get the high HP version and with a discount. If you give it N, you could cast Barkskin + Skeletal Body upon reaching Alt 1, should be good for most indies.
