Merric is potentially one of the worse characters in the game even with SI. Shitty Atk and middle-of-the-mill Spd. His personal Tome is garbage since most fliers have high Res and is better countered by Bows. He comes at 5* so he will reset your pity rate, cost more effort to become "good" or useable because his default set is shit and he isn't available at 4*. His best build is being a Green MRobin, but FRobin is free and comes at a lower star rarity so she can actually gather enough SP reasonably. Merric is shit.

Think about what you're having trouble with.
Look at your characters and their abilities, and pick some that give you good coverage. You can't be ready for anything, but you can be ready for enough things.
You almost always want to have one of each color, triangle advantage is just that significant.
Consider skill inheritance. Having a few really well put together characters is better than a pile of shitters.

Don't understate the importance of the skill changes, either. Basically every fucking skill in Awakening just gave you a bunch of evasion, hit, or crit and therefore did jack shit for your overall gameplay, whereas all of the Fates skills are deterministic and can be weaved into your gameplay to do interesting things.
