I love X6, but that's also from knowing the scores of broken-ness in it (and that once you navigate them, it works well enough)

I prefer this type of broken-ness over X5's (unskippable cutscenes, unskippable text prompts EVERY New Game with each character, Armor Parts that take forever to be able to be put to use, the works)

What they both stand as is a sorry state of a proud franchise though. I'm replaying Soul Eraser a bit and the shoddiness also shines, in all the wrong ways (Launch Octopus and Flame Mammoth's BGM were switched, Launch Octopus' sprite reverses to HAVING ARMS if you cut them off, Flame Mammoth's trunk remains even if it flew off when he was killed, etc)

if anything, I'd say Xtreme 2 is one of the best X games, even if Berkana and Gareth are actually lackluster bosses.

it's admirable that many of the stages are 100% original, aside from Mammoth and Octopus.

"Many are 100% original" is a stretch since they're mostly remixed versions than fully originals, though there are some. Neon Tiger's for one has its last stretch considerably lifted from Sting Chameleon's.

The screen ratio also doesn't help (some bosses like the Two Headed Tank just feel outright cheap because of it) and they didn't do a good job of translating enemy sizes (the bats' head is the same size of the giant krakens in Octopus' stage. The result is the bats are more of a threat than a sub-boss is) and I've had issues already with controlling like the character hugging a wall when I hit the opposite direction.

But then again I only have the japanese copy and I heard they fixed the BGM order for Octopus/Mammoth. This was a time IMO Capcom was just really going "just, like, do whatever" with X series because X6's japanese version has an incomplete version of the Intro Stage theme, missing some guitar riffs added only in the US version.

Quality Control wasn't much of a priority it seems.

FULL DISCLOSURE; I like Soul Eraser a whole lot more than Cyber Mission but SE is showing quite a few flaws my goggles had forgotten.

Once in the final stage I tried climbing a wall and I ended up inside it, and couldn't get out no matter what. I could scroll forward because the collision detection pushed me all the way upward beyond the screen, but I couldn't pass the boss gate.

And about Model W having sentience, all of the other models (be them made by Ciel or Albert ), so why it wouldn't have. I mean, it's probably not like the other models since Siarnaq mentions that Model W have different levels of awakening the first time you see him.
And then there is that bit where Serpent's mind went downhill after he started to hang around Prometheus and Pandora.
So its (Model W) consciousness is probably split between the pieces: the more of the together, the more aware it is and more insane its host get.

Given that during Albert's evil reveal he had 4 of those portable Model Ws to protect his ass and a huge storeroom full of model Ws, he could easily be more Weil than Albert when he made Grey.
