Good morning /agdg/!
What progress are you making today?
>>
>>174606098
Show the game, but no. Almost definitely no.
>>
>>174606098
pretty good =/= profitable

You are naive if you think your game will become successful purely based on its merit as a game, you also need some serious marketing work, not necessarily scummy shit like botting but just having the skill to get your game out there and being a social butterfly.
>>
>>174606148
it's not inkscape, it's every vector program, you either export a bigger image then scale it down, or apply a blur filter in inkscape, you need to play with filters, but why the fuck are you using vector art if you're not exporting to svg

Are you the same guy from the last thread? That's wrong. If you have a good game, which usually implies it's also at least presentable, all you need to do is to show it at a place, which has people who'd like that type of a game. The quality will carry it from there.
>>
>>174606627
You're supposed to drop something you do for exercise not just slap it on to your dailies.

Aren't Kickstarters nowadays just another marketing tool for people who already have enough demand for their game, at least for 1MA?

Can you really put up a unknown game and make like 10k, assuming you did all the work with a demo, trailer, and all that?

sdl says taht certain functions should only be called from the main thread or whichever thread called setvideo

so my engine can call them from any thread, this can be a source of lockup, so I implemented wrapper functions that insert a userevent into the messagepump and block on a semaphore before returning, while the underlying SDL function is called from the main thread on receipt of the event, and then signals the semaphore.

seems to work nicely

Just doing some meshing passes now that the blocking-out of the level is complete.

Showing side-by-sides of the previous BSP geometry and the subsequent static mesh geometry to give an idea of what sort of changes are being made.

So far it seems fairly performant but going with a complex-collision-only model for actual geometry (since I hate invisible walls on 'detail' surfaces in platformer-type games, it's annoying to try for a jump you should be able to make and then be forced off) could potentially have a performance impact down the road as the tri count increases, we'll see.

Really LOVING the foliage tool, too, it's super performant and easy to use. I'll probably wind up doing it for all of my detail-meshing, including stuff that isn't "carpeting" areas (like rubble or stones that will be randomly placed).
>>
>>174609045
I can't speak for the 'architecture' but I don't think it is remotely worth using over UE4.

In my experience UE4 is better in every regard besides foliage and the ease of landscape painting, and when you look at the few games who actually do use it, they tend to have a lot of foliage and landscapes.

I'm a lazy idiot that doesn't know much, I listen to edgy music, and I use any information i can to my advantage(Not in a bad way), I love oldschool games such as Banjo Kazooie, And Pokemon stadium, I am a very confused person, My favorite game genres are mainly 2d/3d platformers, 8bit, fps, and any kind of RPG. Me and my friends play games all the time. I also enjoy Web development, I'd like to say i am fluent with HTML, CSS, and some python. I suck ass at math. I want to be able to make games with unity, I want to make a 2D 8bit type game with intense physics and music, it would be like street fighter but with Chibi characters that are bad ass, I also want to make a 3D platformer with a peacful environment, Pink leafs on the ground and a very comfortable feeling with fluid controls. I grew up with a N64 and it has impacted me in a big way. I also enjoy drawing very odd things, mainly distorted versions of 90's cartoon characters. That's about it, I hope I'm not disliked for being unorganized with myself.

Made a neat sword trail thing to show exactly where the tip of the blade was in a single swing. I also greatly improved my hit detection, and this sword trail was very helpful in helping me debug an issue where the sword trail was curving off a full frame sooner, which is not good with an attack like this.

>>
>>174624848
Seeing the trail of an attack after the fact seems kinda useless, unless it's meant to be nothing more than a cool visual effect. Is that attack going to be part of an attack string or is it an opening attack? It looks like it might be slightly difficult to aim.
>>
How was your latest meeting with your marketing advisor?
>>
>>174625278
A lot of general beginner gamedev tutorials don't use an engine at all (at least for the first episodes), cause they're trying to get people warmed up to programming first or something.
>>
>>174625338
Currently it's just a test attack. I wanted to test out the simple sword animation system I made, and I decided to make some sort of an unsheathing samurai attack because I thought it would look cool. Also, I described the reasoning for it poorly. The sword saves to memory where the tip of the sword is when it also does its hit detection. This let me see that it seemed to be way off when it was doing its hit detection, because the player was supposed to stop moving the same game tick as the sword swing was supposed to end. But the player was stopping moving a full game tick later, meaning the hit detection was further back. That's also why the sword changes color, to show what states of animation it's in. Orange is the one where actual damage occurs. The sword changing color won't be in game, but although the swing trail is crude and hangs much longer than it should, I can at least turn that into a neat visual effect later down the line.

I actually like that it's an attack with a wide a nuanced area of effect, so I didn't want to discourage you from using attacks like that in your game, but it definitely seems more like a situation usage move than a bread and butter attack. That's all I was trying to get across. If you have other, easier to land attacks OR if the the game is based around precise and skillful use of attacks like the one in your .gif then I'll think you'll be doing good. I guess maybe it's too early for these types of criticisms to be particularly relevant to you, I dunno how far along you are or how concrete your combat design is at this point.

not participating in a game jam is not retarded. The retarded thing is saying you're going to join, but then when the theme is announced you give up within 5 minutes.
Those are the retards that I was calling retards.
It takes me up to a few hours to come up with a good idea for the jam sometimes, and the whole point of it is to finish something, even if you skip the theme completely.

Anyone know a good bit about RPGMaker's vanilla battle system?

I want to edit the "attack" so that there's multiple options. Like for example, I want the actor to be able to choose between a "swing" that has a higher hit rate and less damage, and a "slash" that has deals more damage at the cost of less accuracy and things like that.

Old video. I have been spending all of my time redrawing backgrounds for the past couple of weeks so not much new to show but I did recently add a total of 3 playable moths. I don't think I will be able to have stage 2 presentable in time for DD14 but there will be more playable characters than last time plus a rebalanced/paced intro stage and extra options.

sorry for the video quality. I have gotten better at it but again, this is an older post

Absolutely! 3 selectable moths, a (hopefully) better intro stage, more options to customize your experience and a reworked control scheme. I also learned from my DD13 outing and will be maxing out the player right from the start so that everyone who plays will be able to experience the full intro stage. I know it is frustrating when you cannot seem to progress no matter how hard you try so I will be doing everything in my power to facilitate that this time around.

Stage 2(+) in DD15 and beyond!

If you meant a game with a live representation of other players and not just an abstracted battle between resources of online players:
Those are probably rare because the usual RTS, FPS and racing games are pretty battery hungry and need the user to commit some time to a game where he has to focus, whereas other more browser-game-like games game can be paused at any time, allowing the user to log is and do some actions almost in every situation.

No you don't get it.
You make a typo and it gets a giant red underline indicating there's a problem in the code, therefore you should never get compiling issues due to simple typo mistakes. (Unless you're blind and just hit the compile hotkey every 5 seconds)

The last time I had a typo issue was when I almost just started programming.

Redpill: when an IDE shows you a red line it runs the code through the lexer of a compiler in the background.

no need to have another parent object for this, if you attach the actor to the platform, you can still move it, but the platform will also affect the actor's movement. The actor is still free to move in the same ways he always is.
Just attach it, when you collide on top of it, and detach it when you jump, it should be easy to test, and it should work perfectly

These dogs look so happy. They're just living and being dogs and having such a good time and they don't mind that they're goofy little shits who never accomplish things. That stuff doesn't bother dogs. And it's such a good picture of them. The colors work well, the poses are so readable, and the composition is satisfying. It's like I'm right there. I can imagine exactly what their woofs sound like and even how they smell and how it would feel if I could pet them.

I miss my dog so much.

I should have spent more time with him. Just one more day would have been fine. Enough to say goodbye. I didn't get to do that. I have dreams that I see him again and I can take him for a walk and throw his favorite ball and then I wake up to the same empty room I always do.

I don't want to make games at all. I'm not sure I ever did. I just want to play with my dog, and I can't now, so I go through the motions to try and fill the void.

It's fine. Most people are still stuck in 2013 where Unity had poor support for 3D.

2.5D + 2D makes it the perfect tool for modern 2D. Hell, you can do 2D yet have 3D rendered BG or effects.
>>
>>174638198
Depends if you want to do pixels or not, I mean, Unity can do pixels but it wont hold your hand through it. You need to set it up yourself.

The people who sperg and say Unity can't do 2D properly just lack the knowledge. Still, there are better tools for 2D games, Unity is a 3D engine first.

Godot uses GDScript for scripting. You can make modules with C++, but you have to recompile the engine with the module for that to work.

In Godot 3 that's changed though, you'll be able to use C++ without recompiling the engine. And there will be C#

Did they fix that weird bug in Unity where your game will forget what joypad is connected to the computer and start swapping existing joypad slots around and adding duplicates? The way I heard it you essentially had to buy a plugin that kept track of joypads when they were re/disconnected, when a program like Game Maker does that by default.

This is not a flaw, it's meant to be like this to provide extremely accurate response to your input , physics calculations, and all that.

You really need to start again instead of polishing a turd.

I presume you're trying to make a fighting or beat em up type game so take a look at some character sprites and go through their movement frame by frame and study how they were made and how further animations link together. For instance, you've way too many tween frames which is why the movement looks so sluggish and weak.

Timing, weight and movement of the core figure are way more important than extraneous details like hair bangs.

- a better slash/trail effect

- damage effect for enemies
- speed boost for one of the attacks (to make closing in easier)
- stun/knock up effect for other mechs
- proper model for the sword

Re-implemented the down-ice attack and passive MP regen. The down-ice attack functions pretty much the same as before, though the magical exploding hockey puck can be hit around a bit better. Probably need to make the persistent AoE larger.

Passive MP regen still requires the appropriate item to be equipped, which would be equipped by default and you'd start out with it.

well I create the semaphore in an unsignaled state, put the semaphore into the userevent data2, and sent it to the messagepump, and then block on it

then the main thread will grab it from the data2 pointer of the userevent message, it will perform the requested action, then it will signal the semaphore

then the thread will continue, it will free the semaphore and return to the engine caller function

that is how i have it working, now you're probably thinking that this means the semaphore is being allocated on the heap and freed every function call, but I can easily make it a static and allocate only if it isn't null, to get rid of all the malloc/free events

It's a ghetto ranged attack and is tiny (so it could go through tiny holes I guess). It can have a bunch of applications if you put your mind to it.

>Boss is in the air and can't reach at the moment
>Call a puck and knock it up into the air to the boss
>Boss now as a persistent AoE on it

It also 'spikes' an enemy, so if it hit a flying enemy it would get brought down a bunch.

Legs are completely separate objects from main body. If a leg is too far away from its designated place, it will start moving. There is also a condition that legs in front/back and on the other side can't move at the same time.
That's pretty much it, it's amazing how simple it is.

> computer science has a lot in common with magic.

Only figuratively.

It's like physics in that respect.

Program in CS = Highly compressed representation of a family of trajectories through a very large (discrete) state space

Equation in Physics = Highly compressed representation of a family of trajectories through a very large (continuous) state space

And the appropriate algebras give structure to the descriptions in both cases.

The pixel art is in place because I felt mixing and matching line art with the otherwise 100% completely pixel rest of the game would clash a bit. It is something I would like to experiment with one day because I feel HD art would limit me a lot less than the pixels I am working with now (there are lots of details I would like to add to the outfits). As it is though, at 640x480 resolution the difference in presentation (plus the amount of work involved to update all currently existing 21 portraits (or conversely update all other pixel aspects to be line art) would be a massive scope increase that I am not sure I can justify just yet. Thank you for the suggestion though, anon! It is definitely a thing I have thought of and, time permitting, when I get further along with stages I might revisit the idea.

i remember other themes being "two buttons" or "a game on one screen" (something like that), which seems to imply that a theme which describes a smaller scope - an easier kind of game to make, is the kind of theme that will be most popular.

Basically any theme that sounds easy to do is the kind of theme that will be selected.

Usually it's really simple like switching between idle, preparation and attacking states.
The most interesting part is the mechanics to help switching those states and pick the target.
Enemies have defined types of objects and their reaction towards them. So for example flying enemy hunts down small insects, but it's afraid of bigger creatures.
The reaction can also change on the fly towards a specific creature. When player attacks it can trigger self defense reaction, or even cause whole mob of angry enemies.

yeah okay:
1) the mountains and the clouds should be at different parallax layers

2) Try even making the bottom most clouds scaled larger and on a parralax closer than the mountains, then the mountains, then the far clouds, because the mountains look very far away and the bottom clouds look like maybe they are close than the mountains

3) walk animations for the npc sprites of course

besides that it looks good to me

>>174644291
I suggest forcing vsync on and just always run with vsync, and either time the period between frames manually to do delta timing, or run the rest of the game in a separate thread that is capped to a set rate like 50fps, which would probably result in camera updating at refresh rate but npcs not changing position faster than every 20ms

you could later revisit it and have a previous and next value for everything instead of an instantaneous one, and then the rendering calculates the current period position through that and interpolates and renders the interpolated positions.

I've thought about doing that but never actually done it so that one is just an idea.

I think it is a good idea though, because your logic can assume a fixed logic per second tick rate, and if the user has a super fast pc at a high hertz monitor, he can still see smooth movements, and you don't need to do delta time in the game logic

or so I imagine

It's perfectly fine to make things just to learn or prototype or just for the fun of it. Wasting years on a project that goes nowhere is a different matter. Some devs right here do that.

As a prototype that seems to be coming along very nicely but you'd have to invest quite a bit in developing that art style if you want to make money out of it. Would probably need some gimmick to make it stand out from the mass of survival games. Or multiplayer and pvp to make it the next FOTM survival game since that playerbase keeps hopping from one game to another.

Don't fucking do this. There is zero reason. Just use delta time. Not only does using delta make it so you can set the timer based on real second (1.0 = 1 second), but it also means this code will work exactly the same no matter what the FPS is.

yeah C++ shit with templates and complex header files makes the build time take forever

you have to set up precompiled headers and shit like that

meanwhile C files compile in like 1/5 of a second

Just have an initial movement state that's fairly short and initiates running if it detects another press.
>>
>>174680495
I went from C to C++.

I use it as C, but with namespaces, STL, interfaces, better type checking, and easier memory management.

You don't have to use C to write good C++.

How often do you guys use normal maps? Is there any reason to not use one at all?
>>
>>174682170
There's no reason besides the effort of making one
>>
>>174680840
You're the first person I've ever seen that enjoys rigging. Unless that was sarcasm
>>
>>174682005
so you like making class objects on the stack and having their destructors run automatically when they fall out of scope?
>>
>>174682489
Sure. Or, for global instances, I do this kind of thing.

static class KillThis {
~KillThis() { /* run on exit */ }
} instance;
>>
>>174682005
I hate the namespace syntax in C++ personally (the fucking ::). That being said, I prefix most of my functions, in the style of "Namespace_doSomething()".

I also don't think memory management is any easier in C++ - if anything, its confusing, especially when somebody goes out of their way to abstract it all away. Copy constructors and things of that sort also prevent simple memcopying. That being said, I generally avoid the standard memory management tools other than for allocating a larger block at the beginning of the program.
>>
>>174682828
so you use global arrays of objects like

Sprite sprites[MAX_SPRITES]

or something like that?
>>
>>174682828
Smart pointers let you reference count, which is really nice for certain shit in games, such as image resources.

Also, I prefer not having to explicitly destroy things that go out of scope.

I do agree that creating a nonstandard memory layout that screws with memcopy and the like is bad, but you don't have to do that just because it's C++.
>>
>>174683016
Pretty much, although those are usually tied to some sort of larger structure, like a level or scene.
>>
>>174683073
that probably helps it have better performance because the compiler can reduce the indirection or do more inline optimisations or something
>>
>>174682316
I usually hate rigging but this one was so easy to get looking decent because I settled for simple. To me, rigging is rewarding but it's usually a grind, so when you don't have the grind, it's just easy rewarding feeling!
>>
That, and objects being closer to each other is friendlier to the cache. At least personally I also want to keep the game state as close as possible to a single block of memory, as that makes serialization easier since you can almost just memcopy the thing.

Trying out Godot for LD, I actually really like the idea behind it but documentation is kind of limited/confusing...any solid tutorials for something like a simple platformer?

Welcome you fags to how people actually finish commercial products instead of working on prototype shit in their moms basement for 10 years. Everything is fucking derivative

Stealing an enemies overall design is not being derivative. There are a million different ways to model various elements and he blatantly copies/cubifies/and pastes so-many-things.

A cross between Guild of Dungeoneering and the Fallout Shelter quests where you explore a huge dungeon. Depending on the theme it would lean more towards making dungeons or creating them. Small worlds = small dungeons = no fun

Are you actually reading books (pdfs) or just drawing a lot? You should be reading, because books will teach you exactly what you say you can't do.
