The WA is supposed to do 2x the damage of a regular shot but its inaccurate, eats FP, requires 10 bolts to do 4, must be 2 handed or held in the right hand to do so, plays a very noticable animations, and is overall not the Arbalest.
Also, it has a 20 dex requirement. Not sure how a crossbow has a dex requirement.

For low level PVP you're better off pumping the points into vigor and endurance. Go with a raw weapon with just minimal stats in order to wield it.

low level you either go raw or go 27 str. The stat requirement for frayed blade is too high for that level range, especially when you will tend to be in 3v1 situations. If you want use use a katana then try going for lower dex and pick a more optimal starting class

DS2's biggest failing is simply Art. Art on every level beyond its vague concepts. Not simply graphics, but the overall effort which went into achieving a consistent look, the styles chosen for the underlying design of everything before a renderer was ever involved. It's not a lighting engine problem, for people who are bitter about a trailer, it's a Lead Art and Design team problem.

This is something Fromsoft is typically absolutely amazing at, it's their greatest strength as a team, they have genuinely fucking superb artists behind the core design of everything, and apparently they either weren't involved in DS2, or their vision was completely compromised by other decisions or the general development fuckup. This has a knock-on effect for the perception of every single thing the game does, because without having that typical style and polish which ooze nothing but pure quality out of every other Fromsoft title, whatever the game tries to do ends up feeling illegitimate.

This is part of why other titles get away with things which DS2 gets shit on for, because in other games whatever Fromsoft try to do looks TIGHT, it looks purposeful, it looks like it's all intended to be exactly the way it is, and you're then left to genuinely ponder their intentions instead of assuming it's just some janky mistake. The team of artists which put out DS3 and Bloodborne could do the exact same thing, with a lava castle in the sky, and manage to make that lava castle in the sky transition look so polished, and deliberate, and blend so well with the game world that nobody would have any doubt that they 100% intended for there to be a lava castle in the sky.

DS2 despite having interesting ideas, good encounter and level design, superb core combat mechanics, looks like a janky mess held together with tape and so nothing it does will ever be thought of as clever. It's all perception.

Most criticism is just repeated from Matt's video, and people need to form their own opinion

Healing Items are okay because they're slow, deliberate and punishable, running out of estus is not fun (his opinion)

Armored humans with weapon fights are interesting because they are fights where the enemy has the same toolset as the player

Multi-enemy fights aren't bad, players need to learn how to play without lockon. Saying bosses that require you to manage multiple adds is anti-dark souls is bullshit as the first two bosses in the souls series (Phalanx and Tower Knight) were fights that required you to manage adds/camera.

World interconnectivity of DaS1 is bad because most encounters are designed one way and if you come from the other way the encounter is watered down or bad, for ex dart throwers despawn after they die.

DaS2's world not making sense, makes it interesting because you'll never know what to expect and plays on the "time is convoluted" motto

DaS2 is criticized for being more linear, despite DaS1 being more linear. You have to ring bells, you have to go through Sens, you have to go through anor londo, you have to kill o&s etc. DaS2 you can just get 2 mil souls and fuck off to end game.

DaS1 gameplay never changes (sen traps never change, Anor Londo Arrow fire at the same rate and pattern) DaS2 gameplay changes because most roadblocks are enemies in the way rather than some mechanic.

Enemy placement in DaS2 is intelligently placed letting the player decide how to proceed with it, whereas other games you have to do the "correct" method.

"Tons of dudes" criticism is silly, when you get surrounded it's the player's fault, you have to approach cautiously. Or play strategically.

Anyway on this topic, did people genuinely find Scholar that much harder than base DS2? I saw it as a remix that was deliberately designed to trip up people who'd learnt the original, but I don't think it would be much harder for people if it was their first time playing DS2.
I mean I can see from the video that he's pretty terrible, maybe not as terrible as MM, but I still feel that the trouble he had with Scholar must just be a result of his expectations. He's surely just forgetting how much effort things took the first time around. In the context of recommending Scholar to new players over base DS2, I don't think it'd be a problem for people to start on Scholar?
