I'd never fight without armour if I could help it. At this point in the game, you can grab the armour pickups a lot of the time because most players aren't going to be looking for them. Same for the megahealth.

Apparently they enlarged the hitboxes of the light champs but I doubt it'll change things much. As soon as the update finishes I'm just buying Slash again. At this point in the game I think you should only be playing Slash, Nyx or Anarki.

Both server side hit detection and client side hit detection have their changes on gameplay.

Client side hit detection favors the shooter.
Server side hit detection favors the nimble.

With movement being such a major part of QC, I think server side hit detection would be the real way to go. It might just be better to bring toothpick characters speed down, and hope that players get better at making slow fat characters go fast.

The real challenge is getting servers located all over the world with enough power to run very high tick rate and minimize latency as much as possible to begin with. The reason the closed beta is blowing out some people's internet connections is because they're probably trying to see just how many updates per second they can get out of modern day internet connections and users and their own servers.

Unless they're like "LOL microtransaction that'll be FIFTEEN DOLLARS" the hybrid pay-to-unlock or play-to-unlock system generates way more content, better content for a game in the long run. is this some sort of weird joke? If anarki is going really fast, and I drag my crosshair onto his body and shoot my rail, I should hit him. I had my crosshair over the pixels which represent where his hitboxes are.

Why should I have to calculate how much to shoot into the future based on 70 ping? If they were accurate on their screen, meaning they had 70% accuracy with rails on their screen, then that should mean 70% rails.

Never played quake before, mostly played fighters my entire life. I get the same rush from playing this game from when I compete in tourneys. I just went 32-3 and hit so many good airborne rockets and rails. Feels fucking good man.

Overwatch general gets a bit of bleed over from the QC beta. Some guys posting webms of their QC shooting. Overwatch a section of the the playerbase that is dying for a quality arena/team based hybrid shooter. They just can't stand the low return on skill in Overwatch, the inane balancing, and the shitty feel from the hit detection and netcode.

I've gotten used to moving around the maps while keeping my speed and not hitting into the walls much, but the amount of kills I get in a game has definitely dropped. Gotta improve on staying in action instead of just hopping around and avoiding everyone. Having lots of fun learning the ropes.

The largest mental hurdle for new Quake players in my experience is the idea that you are in your weakest state fresh out of spawn. You need to treat the map as you would the 'neutral game' in something like Street Fighter with weapons being your normals in that analogy.

Focus more on increasing your own strength and controlling key locations at the right times rather than hunting players with the intention to kill them (that will happen naturally). This is naturally harder to do in non-duel modes as you have more than one opponent.

When Bethesda unlocks duel that will be a far more useful training tool as the outcome of your decision making will be more obvious.

I was initially timing both armors and mega, but dropped it because I was getting killed in seconds anyway (too many players on the map). Now I just run around fragging as fast as possible and picking items on the run when I can. And ofc hopping on Quad, with proper LG you can get like 15 frags per run it's crazy.

that's because if we're ever going to get a quake game, there has to be money in it. And money requires a playerbase.
Quake does not have that playerbase, so it's trying to grab people without annoying the elites too much.

No one gives a shit about duel except for us. quake deathmatching is a fun, chaotic clusterfuck. It doesn't have that much strategy, but it's fun and will attract players.
We will have classic duel available, but also the devs want to focus on 3v3 as well. People like teamgames. They like spawning with a starter kit.
That's why clutch moves faster when you walk straight and has a shield, they made a character for people who can't strafejump.

Again, we will have classic duel. For all the purists out there wanting an oldschool arena fps, I certainly don't see you fuckers playing reflex/quakelive.
This is literally the best case scenario and we should take it.

So Quake Champions feels pretty much exactly like the Doom multiplayer. Janky hit detection, garbage tick rate (getting shot around corners/through walls). Spawn system puts me more often in front of 3 enemies than anywhere near my team. Only good thing I have to say about it is it looks and runs well.

Pretty much only difference is special character abilities and non-loadout based.

The rocket does not have projectile tracking smoke effect coming out. Wrong. You can absolutely dodge LG by avoiding the beam and by picking up on weaknesses of the opponent's aim. Some people tend to lag behind the target, others tend to overshoot it. You can abuse this but only once you've noticed it and if you know how to counter it. For instance against the overshooters you want to stop, then keep moving the same way. This will cause them to track "past" you and then flick "past" you a second time when they try to correct and you start moving again. Whereas against a "lagger" this move would be useless. He would just catch up to you and stay on target. This is how strenx and evil aim and there's less you can do at that point. Against strenx people would go in close because he used low sens like

QC is set up as a bait and switch. Bait in normalfags with slow trailers showing Overwatch characters - then throw them into the lions' den to be devoured by people who can strafejump, track them with LG and dodge their tier 1 rockets.

All the talk about accessibility is a complete sham since QC really is the opposite of accessible. It's everything we had to learn playing previous Quakes PLUS the champion meta. How big is your mousepad? As a rule of thumb it makes sense to be able to do a full spin without leaving your mousepad. If it's really big or if you don't use one at all then try something like 30-40 cm for a full turn. If you're using kiddy units that should be something like 12-16 inches.

Maybe they're having difficulty making pop-up work with the different classes. The light classes would be thrown about while the heavies would still exhibit no change. So heavy characters would still be hitscan monsters you can't stop with RL.

That is assuming you use a realistic / immersive way of calculating knockback physics where heavy characters actually behave "heavily". The alternative would be equal knockback on everyone but that would look and feel silly imo.

Maybe not the whole game, but a lot of the art assets and models are. Remember, Q1's development was rocky at best and a goddamn Katamari of ideas and art at worst- scaling the game vertically does stretch some assets (push buttons, ammo boxes, etc), but others that look squished normally (the HUD font, Grunts and similar enemies, etc) end up looking much more natural and pretty much anything that looks round like all those red stained glass panes turns into a proper perfect circle when stretched to 5:4.

Even if this were true, which is probably not, and the game deserves being granted the benefit of the doubt, given what we've seen and heard so far, the alternatives would be:

1) Having no new Quake game at all.
2) Having a game which appeals to old-timers, but will end up dead like the rest.

Honestly, even if QC turned out to be a botched Quake game and worse than the rest of the series, I'd still support it and the devs, because a bad/imperfect Quake game is still miles better than 90% of the contemporary mainstream trash. If it's gonna be a success, it will at very least be steering the market somewhat towards old-school arena FPS-like games, which is a step in the right direction.

It's actually a problem of the maps. The high HP characters never get to abuse their high HP, because there's isn't enough HP/armor on the maps to top them up. Since the pickups aren't percent based, you're always running on half HP.

Since you're not at full HP, you're just a fat and slow medium HP character.

That's the real problem.

The beta goes through weekly phases from the look of it. Last week they started it on Thursday and closed on Sunday. This week and next week will also the follow the same schedule, so it's fair to assume they'll probably keep doing that for a while. So since a key will allow you to play right away and any future tests as well, I'd say it's worth it. They're dirt cheap too from what I hear.

I think people overestimate how difficult it is to understand the game. It just takes someone telling you items spawn on timers and what they are and that out of control play is hard and they should accept that.
To not be lost on the map is just a matter of knowing them. Teleporters are probably the biggest problem with learning maps, learning a layout that doesn't have arbitrary 4th dimensional passages all over the place isn't hard. It helps to just keep walking through the portals and envisioning where you were on the map before you teleported. Takes like 10 minutes per map to get to a state where it's intuitive for me (with exceptions).

What is your FOV in QL? If it's around 90 you could use the map geometry to eyeball a 90 degree angle. Can you hide weapon models? That would probably help since the wrong FOV on the weapons might distract from the real FOV.

If COD had a buy menu or if CSGO had aiming down sights and (gameplay-influencing) weapon mods you could draw parallels there. As it stands shooting is comletely different in the two franchises. Modern day CODs were absolutely influenced by CounterStrike though, heavily. They have in common that you have to slow down to shoot accurately, the scale of the maps, the (lack of) movement etc. COD is basically CS for console babbies.

Apparently not since I'm a Quake player. I'm still not sure what you would like QC to be. Another Quake 3 reskin like QL? Another slight twist that retains all of the original spirit like Quake 4? The former wouldn't attract any new players, the latter wouldn't attract anyone at all if Quake 4 is any indication.

I could have lived continuing to play Quake Live with a "2.0" graphics update that somewhat gets it up to par with modern games by completely replacing light and shadows with modern real-time effects, and all textures so the game looks contemporary in streams. But we both know Quake would just continue to bleed players in that scenario. It would never recover and become relevant again in that world. I'm skeptical about QC but a change that feels radical to the veterans had to be made in any successful attempt to lure new players into the community. If QC ends up missing the mark then hey, at least they tried.

Adding abilities on cooldowns is among the last things I would have done with quake. Diabotical has ideas of how to retain the identity of Quake while introducing new ideas. Quake honestly never needed additional features, it's already too complex, that's why casuals won't play it. Automate strafejumping (aka take the strafing out of the jumping but keep the output the same) like they hinted at with the infamous QL update. That's the only thing that will ever make a Quake game successful in the mainstream. Of course veterans would boycott a game like that entirely. But that's what Quake needs. id are the captain and strafejumping is the Titanic. Currently the people making Quake are still trying to do the honorable thing, pretending like the Titanic isn't sinking. If Champions fails Quake will go dark completely for a few years and then all bets are off. If Champions is a moderate success (most likely scenario) then we're stuck with another 10 years of a barely supported, barely alive game. I'm almost tempted to hope Champions bombs because of these prospects.

I don't see why anyone thinks this is a big hurdle. /v/ managed to play Tribes ascend just fine so why would you need to alter a mechanic that's so similar in execution precision? Tribes punishes you more for failing the movement portion too. I think it's the control elements that is the issue for newer players. Good players will inevitably take all the resources on the map and leave newer players with nothing, and it's a very unfair fight. Out of control play has always been hard in these games. If you could invert that or balance it somewhat that might help. Reflex makes that a thing by having armors not be available for pickup if you're above threshholds, but it also lets you hold the mega way too much. Not saying that on the whole Reflex/CPMA is more newbie friendly i'm just saying that that aspect of items in the game works in that direction. I don't think abilities do that since they've tied the cooldowns to items too and you both get them.
I don't think Quake can succeed as team based games anymore. There's so many options now and most of those options are at least superficially more interesting. 1v1 or 2v2 is where these games must put their focus to niche themselves. 2v2 is a very rare format in FPS right now.

Tribes Ascend is way easier to get into than any Quake game. How long ago did you start playing Quake? You probably don't remember (or don't want to acknowledge because muh hardcore skill epenis) how long you took to get good at strafejumping.

I agree with what you're saying about item control, but the way I look at it item control would be much less of a problem if new players could focus on it right away. Instead they have to get good at the movement and the high skill ceiling weapons LG and RL before it even makes sense to start worrying about item control. So if you want to explain Quake to a new player you have to start by saying

They'd still think everyone is cheating because how would you aim that well etc. but they would immediately get a rush out of moving so fast in tight spaces, doing some easy rocket jumps and hitting some lucky rails. Instead picking up Quake feels like entering a wheelchair basketball tournament and you've never sat in a wheelchair before.

Quake's biggest strength was always its mods. CS has totally eclipsed Quake as a whole and it all started as a quake 2 mod. Last I checked duel servers are dead as fuck and only live on through a tightly knit community. If you check the top servers for every Quake it will be FFA deathmatch, CTF, or one of the mods like MegaTF or Gloom. id has pretty much never catered to duelfags because they know it's a tiny portion of players. I like FFA but it's barely played in EU, there will typically be two populated servers. And CA isn't much bigger. And plenty of the people who play on the few populated servers for those modes are actually duellers who just use FFA or CA for aim practice, warmup, stuff like that. Tribes movement and quake movement is very similar in the speed difference you achieve. It's a point so I don't expect myself to be able to convey but when you look at precise you have to be to achieve a a basic goal between the different games.

Well ascend did have a few things that made it easier but you have to understand that the goal isn't getting good for new players. It's getting competent. Getting competent is a very easy task in both games. In quake it's holding strafe+w and aiming at a slight angle while pressing spacebar, it's terrible from a good players point of view but it's a significant speed increase for a newbie and it certainly makes them a lot more cable. In tribes it's being able to reach 800 ups for the grab or appreciate the spinfusor speed enough to have a chance at airshots. Again not that impressive by good players measures but it's a big difference for a newbie.

What makes quake and tribes engaging is that they're granular games in terms of skill. No player is achieving the theoretical maximum speed/navigation in these games because they're not having movement based discreet systems. If you take something like overwatch/cs there's room for players to be good and bad but movement is easily optimised. That's one of the core elements of Quake that makes it engaging. If you remove the strafing id like something else that isn't just a button I press for speed. Sadly the only analogue input we have on the PC is the mouse. So unless you go the Tribes route and form the terrain to give us analogue control you're stuck with strafing or some other form of mouse based movement. QC has greatly limited this aspect outside of a few characters. I don't appreciate that. It's not worth it to sacrifice the game like that.

I read a while ago about some other beta game and the devs had some code or some shit hidden in screenshots when you took them, so they could just ban people who took screens and tried hiding names

What am I doing wrong? I get killed almost instantly everytime and my best weapon is starter MG with 19% accuracy and that is a very sad story.

That's not a good sign. Are you actually trying to get better weapons and stacking up before taking fights? I see a lot of newbies go for fights as soon as they spawn without ever really trying to collect items.

I hardly ever go below top 3 and when I google the people who beat me it's almost always someone with heavy Quake experience, so you should have no problems getting top 5 with a bit of thinking and strategy. I barely played Quake myself and my accuracy isn't great.

Okay I did considerably better on Burial Chamber. I think it's because Blood Covenant was a classic map and everybody played it like a second nature plus it is extremely cramped. This snow map was giving me Unreal Tournament vibe where I can breath and actually get some weapons, and not run into someone naked within 5 seconds of spawning. Also half of this match was staying frozen for seconds, the performance issues is severe in this game as if they didn't do jack shit since phase 1.

I was always a UT guy until years later I discovered Q3 and the wonders of Crash, Hunter, Slash and Mynx. Lauren, Sapphire and the rest just don't even come close.
