How do I beat an awakened fallen empire?

I was able to singlehandedly crush the unbidden but the awakened empire destroys me.

I can't outrange them because I went kinetic. They're using lances and strike craft. I have giga cannons, kinetic batteries and matter disintegrators and point defense.

A month ago:

Q:
>Martin Anward,
>All of the Ascension Paths in Utopia seem interesting, but the fact that the Psionic path was given its own dev diary while the other two were put together in one seemed to indicate to me at first that Psionics received more attention than Biologics or Synthetics. Or it could be just that the latter added onto existing game mechanics, while the Shroud is certainly a new feature.
>My question is whether or not you intend or would like to expand the Biologic and Synthetic ascension paths in future content or DLCs. For example, I can easily conceive of Biologics leading to the taming of spaceborne organisms, or even the crafting of bioships. Perhaps there could also be inspiration drawn from Eldar Maidenworlds to make entire planets 'alive' as a singular organism. On the Synthetic side, perhaps they could eventually turn all their worlds into planetary computers as they no longer have any use for ecology or even atmospheres. One frequent question that was asked of you before was how the Synthetic ascension path would interact with the Machine Uprising, and I'm interested to see what is planned for that in Utopia.
>In general I'd like to see more 'event flavor' for those two ascension paths on par with what we have been shown so far with the Psionic path. But if you intend to leave this to the modding community and focus on other mechanics of the game (warscore and diplomacy) I'd understand perfectly.

A:
>Psionics got more attention because it lacked an associated mechanic, while the other two built on existing mechanics. I'm not going to rule out building more on those paths in the future but there are no concrete plans for it right now.

Well, that's all folks.

Orbital bombardment kind of kills ground combat too in its current state. I know in reality whoever controls space would likely dominate but it makes surface combat an afterthought.

If they were to go for that style of ground combat they'd need to overhaul the attachments system in a way that I really hope would include that.

It's also retarded that you can't enslave aliens as Xenophobic Egalitarian. You can purge xenos any ways you want, even work them to death or eat them but no proper slavery.

I played commonwealth of man which is xenophobe, aliens were all "resident" instead of citizens and had welfare so they were happy, if restricted to their own planets.

Makes most planets have at least one modifier.

Most of them are pretty balanced. Both positive and negative (although I always encouter a shitload of -5% or -10% habitality, or +% build cost/time). Some are pretty OP though (+50% minerals, +25% society research points)

>>173895119
I think what they were going for is having factions shape your empire's policies. So you change things to please the faction you want to dominate your empire, and suppress the factions you don't want in your empire. But the thing is, suppression on its own has a negligible effect on getting rid of a faction, you need to stack governing ethics attraction to really see a difference. And even then, if that faction has more than 10 pops in it then it might never go away completely.
>>
is there a stellaris mod that fixes "fleet power" and gives me some actually useful information instead?

>>173897786

Don't pick authoritarian. Authoritarian only works if you want a monarchy or a heavily stratified society. If you pick dictatorship as materialist, chances are you get totalitarian regime as description, which it fits. Add xenophobic and pacifist to the bill and you are done.

Also here's the situation for my genocidal white man run. The Provalguvor on the right tried to tag team me alongside the purple dudes to the left so I raped them and took a couple worlds.

So far I've exterminated two other civilizations. I almost started on the primitives and then had a change of heart seconds before my troops landed on their planet. They don't know how close they came to extinction. As long as they're below space age I will consider the xenos curiosities to be studied only. Everyone else must be removed.

The two planets I just took I've decided to start a massive refugee crisis instead of purging them. I'll get them all at once in the next war.

You could probably win with that if you act really quick and have the appropriate build.(kinetics)

unbidden stacks are around 54k strength and they start with six of them I think.
About 70k kinetic stack will obliterate the 54k and take around 3k losses. But that gets exponentially worse the more you fight.

When colonizing a planet, which tile should I place the starter base at?

I tried placing it on a 2 Mineral 1 Food tile, but then I saw that when it's completed it gets overwritten into just a 2 energy tile.

Should you move your upgraded capital buildings later?

Well, fuck that, I'm barely 80k. And I tend to unite them during a war or have two armies.

Noob question #2:

How should I handle Frontier Outposts?

Should I be trying to leapfrog to connect my starting area with other habitable planets, or should I chill in my area in the early game, building one or two frontier outposts only to expand my borders slightly where I plan to put mining stations, as a sort of buffer between me and other empires?

How many do you usually build in the early game? I don't want to shoot myself in the foot with energy or influence costs

What's the advantage of having Wormhole or Hyperdrive over Warp?

It just seems like Warp is much more intuitive.
>>
>>173906709

>>
>>173906728
Hyperdrive lets you play hyperlane only games and wormhole is a better version of warp that needs cheap stations.
>>
>>173903356
>mass drivers
>not missiles
It's like you can't do anything right.

Start with missiles and never upgrade them.
>>
>>173906097
Empty or relatively worthless(low food or society research are probably the most worthless) bordering as many energy and minerals as you can.

There is ZERO(unless you're playing hyperlanes) value in actually making sure your territory is properly connected.
You slap frontier outposts to cuck the AI out of good resources and to grab them for yourself.

Depends on the game. You need more if you have fewer good colony options to make up for your shortcomings. If you do have a lot of colonies then they're still obviously fine to build because you still have the same influence, but they come later as developing colonies is more important.

With the expansion traditions they end up being decently cheap as well.

>>173906728
Warp is really slow. Hyperdrive is decently fast but really awkward. Wormhole is the best of the three by an unbelievable margin.
Hyperlanes only(the game setting) can be an interesting way to play though.

>>173906709
With your fleet.

No. Though unless you have the psi-jump drive then you might lose a tiny bit of range compared to wormholes 3. I don't remember exactly. At the end of the day the autonomy and speed of the jump drives make them better anyway.

>>
>>173907005
I wish that was still true for hyperdrive.
The big problem is that the map types themselves are imbalanced. A map of a given star count is the same size regardless of what layout the stars are in. An elliptical map has overall longer hyperdrive connections. 4 armed spirals have a bunch of short connections, and a few long connections between arms. While hyperdive is good on spirals if you happen to spawn in a location next to an arm transition lane, it's really shit if you spawn anywhere else because the short jump range coupled with the wind down time make it roughly equal speed wise to warp, but with none of the freedom of movement bonuses of warp, so it's super easy to get boxed in. It was acceptable back when you could initiate jumps from anywhere in the system because then it had a real tactical advantage over warp, but since they made hyperdrive ships travel to the system edge the same as warp and wormhole, it put it at a real disadvantage.

Wormholes are still the best and I really wish they'd balance the other two to be on par.
Something like base warp range being twice what it is now, and advanced hyperdrives enabling things like chain jumping or revealing new long range lanes. Even a hyperdrive bore ship like the Zuul in SoTS enabling you to create temporary hyperspace lanes, and something more advanced that stabilizes those lanes and makes them permanent.

Reposting from early last thread because I have a follow up now.

Welcome to hivemind no mans land. So originally the place was fully colonized, the blue outline was the blue hivemind, the pink outline the dark pink hivemind and the red outline the light pink fanatic militarist xenophobes.

So pretty much instantly after first contact with each other the hiveminds and militarists have been at constant grinding 3 way war with each other that I checked in on every now and then to keep up to date and see if anyone got a big advantage that could pose problems to me and this is my most recent check.

The psychotic bastards have managed, through constant ceding and conquest in wars, to wipe each other out to the point where two of what were once the most powerful empires in the south of the galaxy are now crippled single system empires, and the fanatic militarists have lost half of their empire and absolutely no fleet power left and have had significant territories marked with the cyan outline conquered from the north by a previously irrelevant faction which has put them on much more equal footing. While the green empire to the south has been able to expand unopposed into the wasteland left by these 3 chumps.

Something like that yeah.
That name just seems a bit newly invented for a sci-fi human-analogue that reaches the stars will still somewhat divided, and they throw together a generic UN themed council to represent their people as a whole.
Rather than a name referring to a new union, your faction sounds more of like a small part of an old union forced into independence.

Remnants, Resurgence. Maybe something like that. It's a matter of opinion it's just that the word United doesn't seem to fit much. League works, but United just sounds a bit weird to me given your description.

So the cyan Bothrian Star Commonwealth have basically removed the pink Avarria Star Regime from the galactic power stage, the green Meko'Nass Conglomerate have continued to push into the desolate no mans land although nothing like as much as the Bothrians.
Surprisingly the purple hive mind haven't expanded out of their single system again and remain there, existing only by the grace of their status as a protectorate under me since all their neighbors hate them, and while the Tycan hive have made steps to reclaim their old territory they too have fallen behind to the point where they are also now a protectorate, I might throw some resources at them to fund some expansion.

As for the rest of the near galaxy, the three empires to the north of me are in a loose bundle of non-aggression pacts and defensive alliances that I'm remaining mostly neutral but friendly with and the Independent Backatta Confederacy to the east exist purely as a galactic punching bag, with everyone nearby them regularly waging war against them for literally no gains, only humiliation as the war goal, while I slowly carve them up into several liberated vassals under my rule. And literally nothing has happened in the northwest of the galaxy in the last 40 years

I should probably start spending some resources soon because all of these being capped is starting to annoy the shit out of me.

So what would you consider a good balance between stars to empires? I want something more "realistic" like about 8 races but not too small of a map where it feels like the distance traveled is too short. I guess I could use clustered starts but I assume that means no empire will spawn on the opposite side of the galaxy correct?

Shouldn't the cybernetics tradition be locked to the perk?

It seems really daft. A spiritual nation, that never bothers with robotics, will eventually take that tradition.
But then I suppose it's no dumber than fanatical purifiers having the diplomacy tradition.
>>
>>173910493
I've not even gotten close to unlock all of them, but the AI can use them too, so I'd say they're relatively balanced if they're good enough at producing Unity.

I'd suggest that you install it and go over all of the bonuses that Each Tradition gives.

>>173910641
Seems the Author is gonna think about doing something like that but not right now. I'd suggest them to do so in the comment section.
>>
>>173910493

>>
>>173910390
Clustered just means that you'll see like four groups of three spread around, rather than a relatively random distance between every nation.

>>173910098
Kinda depends on how you want to play them and more details about their backstory.
You made them xenophile and they've obviously changed into mechanists. Have they turned over a new leaf, or do they plan the same foreign policy of infiltration, manipulation and betrayal.
Has much time passed between their fall and now? Specifically, are others aware of them?
Is their name supposed to be a presentation for foreign inspection, or a name to motivate a broken people?

I feel just plain League the most, maybe confederacy or coalition or something?

I can't really input my thought process into something somebody else is creating, only direct your efforts.

Sub 1000, generally yes. Above 1000, it depends more on how they're equipped and the fleet compositions. At 2000 a 200 point difference is effectively meaningless and it all hinges on how both sides are equipped, leader levels and bonuses, as well as empire ethics and civics.

Wide is infinitely better if you can manage it without tripping up.

The difference between the two is similar to Civ 5, if it were balanced a bit better.
Wide doesn't gimp you as hard and you can go wide through conquest, and tall isn't as strong compared to Civ 5.

The only real concern of going wide is research. Which you can still keep up with, but you do need to actively make sure you do keep up with it.
Sector AI does eventually yield diminishing returns from going wide so most people typically trend towards somewhere in the middle with mostly core systems.

Of which you start with three, which is a little too few.
Easilly beefed up to around 7 before any more are harder to get.
5-7 is about the sweet spot for properly effective tall play.
Depends on how good your colonies are.

>>173911206
At those numbers, no. Depends on composition.
Weapon range, engagement location and a few other things affect the outcome. Certain factors can be skewed to have a far larger effect than their effect on fleet score would matter.

Also of note is that I changed their backstory before I posted them to this board. Must've forgotten to change their ethics too.
Will go back to that, then. I should probably change their ethics from xenophile to authoritarian, and their authority to oligarchic. Does that sound like a good fit?

Each update has been roughly 2 months apart. The current game is pretty close to done, it just needs some balancing and AI work. AI can't play vodyani for shit and the original empires are kind of weak compared to Horatio and Riftborn. I just hope they get the balancing right on the space drakken out of the gate.
>>
>>173912035
Destroyers have bonuses to tracking which counters(not hard, but soft) corvettes, that with bigger weapons make them a little better late game. They also have longer range than corvettes so if you didn't jump right on top of them(or vice versa) they would get a little extra value out of that. There is also the matter of tank and focus fire, you lose more effective firepower before one of their ships goes down, so they snowball in value more than you.
Do you each have combat computers? That module is criminally underrepresented in fleet score calculations and a massive adjustment.
You also said they have a better admiral, which can matter quite a bit, if they're really polarized.

>>173912150
Alright, I'd go for uplifting and arrogant vocabulary then. Just X resurgence, X Ascendancy, or Directive of X or something(though that might work well with the thematic switch to robots) Regarding that switch, how are you playing it? Going full synth that just inherits the behavior of their progenitors? Or genemodding themselves into fertility again? Directive works quite well with the former I feel.

As for ethics I'm not sure. Their deceitful nature is hard to convey through the system. Definately nothing fanatical would make sense, and Oligarchic works(though any form can work really, given RP)
Authoritarian works as well as anything I suppose, just a situation where the system's flaws shine through.

>>173912269
If you are playing unmodded once a crisis has hit there is NOTHING you can do to make it worse. It's kinda lackluster actually. No interdenominational fighting Tyranids, or AI launching a coup in the middle of Galactic chaos.

As for the switch to robots, I could easily see them doing either one. >>173914307
Autocannons are the best weapon until you are fighting super late game stuff(unless unbidden where autocannons are still king) where plasma takes over.

Ship roles are weird. Real world cruisers being faster, less armed and armored battleships is not present. Cruisers in Stellaris are brawlers. Battleships are more tanky but their AI is to ping away at long range. Cruiser AI is to dive in ASAP. They usually take the most fire of any ship type.
Afterburners are relatively worthless unfortunately.

Cruisers are generally pure DPS platforms.
Full suite of medium slots is the general idea, that or torpedo boat.

What are you referring to with batteries?

>>173914819
Because real galaxies have a few more than 1000 stars to begin with and to create some sort of natural shape to expansion and interaction with others I'd imagine.
>>
>>173914385
Yeah, I recently got back to Stellaris with Utopia so I don't know how much has changed, but unless you're being a retard and not building any ships at all the AI basically never attacks you and you can completely ignore the rest of the universe, even with aggressiveness set high. Only exceptions were awakening FEs and crises.

I got most defensive wars when trying out Fanatic Purifier. Everyone you meet gets permanent -1000 opinion. First four neighbors all declared war on me before I did on them, even when they only had marginally higher fleet power.

No such thing. If they're still fallen though with 74 k you should be able to kill them, but even still having maxed out shields and sentient AI is very helpful. Be aware that if you take any of their worlds any other fallen empire will probably awaken.

Also I'm not sure how good Autocannons are against FE.

paradox has to worst dlc design. You can buy 6 dlc from them at 20$ each and you still wouldn't get that same amount of content in actual expansion.

>>173916968
Events pretty much die out altogether once you leave early game and anomalies start to dry up. Could be nice if they added flavor RP events for internal and external politics based on AI personalities followed by projects and quests, so you'd actually have something else to do than blob more or not interact with the rest of the galaxy in any way if you're pacifist / isolationist. Maybe in a future expansion only for 19,99€.

>>173915613
Oh you mean kinetic artillery?
They are pretty decent yeah, probably better on destroyers than anything else though. If you use battleships(which you possibly shouldn't full stop if you're trying to be as meta as possible) then yeah it's probably best in slot I guess. That or Large plasma.

Cruisers are kinda bulkier corvettes, not really slower but a lot less evasive.
Afterburners are a meme yes.
On Corvettes it's weird. The capacitor doesn't help that much, but still probably the best in slot yeah.

Missiles have the highest accuracy and best tracking of any of the starting weapon types, which means they are the best weapon to fight corvettes who rely on their evasion to stay alive rather than lots of armor or shields. Eventually you replace missiles with torpedoes, and then only bother to build your torpedo boats when the enemy is spamming corvettes or if you need to clog up their point defense.
>>
>>173918163

Have you actually tried fighting them? It's more than just "my 150 beats their 120". For example, a 900 missile fleet will get killed by a 600 not-missile fleet, given they have point defense. It's all situational to who you're fighting.

Abuse sensor links, try to get a handle on what weapons, defenses and most importantly engine types that they are running with. They are using mass shields? Avoid using lasers. Lots of point defense? Don't use drones and missiles.

Battleship deathstacks are still the way to go late-game from my experience. Although Destroyers have been useful against Fallen Empires for me.

Everyone turns into synths, with the relevant bonuses and the ability to settle every available world. Settle a world, set up all the buildings, queue your synths, and hand it over to the sector. Holy fuck, is there any way to make the game extend beyond your first succesfull miliatry campaign? The game is currently "reach X fleetpower. you have now won."
The only thing difficulty/advanced start/ galaxy size/empire number does is change said number, and mabye thrown in a "fuck you, eat shit from this fleet you have no way to mach at this point due to me starting with insane advantage and getting twice your income" before they waste their advantage and fall behind with no hope of catching back up.

In true paradox fashion they changed the way governments work without redistributing bonuses so dictatorships are worth taking outside of specific civics like Imperial cult. Previously dictatorships had unique buildings or nice bonuses that made them worthwhile, over the mandates of democracies and oligarchies, but now it's a big fat nothing so in every instance outside the aforementioned civic they're worthless. They threw shit at a wall without bothering to map out how it changes shit. As >>173929558 says they shit out ships and colonies at a frightening pace which sounds horrifying, BUT, if you have leviathans and why wouldn't you another FE will probably awaken soon too and start the war in heaven where everyone picks a side, either with one of the AEs or as part of the league of fuck you space dad, the league can be a bit of a toss up, if no superpower joins it then it'll be swiftly dismantled by the AEs servants, if a superpower DOES join it aka you join it, a lot of empires will fancy their chances at kicking AE ass and serve as wonderful distractions and meatshields.

Generally the AEs will spend all their time bitchslapping each other and generally crippling each others fleets to a level you can deal with if you're careful and once one of them is out of the picture it's only a matter of time before the other goes down since you no longer have to fight on two fronts.

So I've been playing Civ V and I tried out a Community Patch mod, specifically v. 88. What exactly is the idea for some of the changes? Some I really like, such as the fact that the AI can now initiate defensive pacts, pay other nations to go to war, etc. What I don't get is why they are still super sensitive to warmongering (even if you didn't start a war and only took 1 fucking city) and once a few people get mad at you, the whole world refuses to work with you. Also, the other civs don't seem to care much for wonders and hardly do any wars, even if they are a civ like Assyria that is made to make early wars. I feel like this mod has some good parts, but gets kind of killed when most of the other Civs are almost neutered in terms of what they will do to you.

Also, it seems really dumb that civs would accept payment to get into a war they can't possibly do well in. I can maybe understand when the victim civ (me) is so far away that I can't easily take their cities, but why would a neighbor with a military only half the size of mine accept payment to attack me? Is he on a suicide mission?

I can give you a quick rundown if not massively in depth.

Plasma is the best energy weapon, period, disruptors can fuck shields up sure but their damage against heavily armoured hulls is nothing and all the other energy weapons are strictly inferior to plasma at burning through armour which is what you want in energy weapons. Matter disintegrators are technically better but you're only getting them after beating the unbidden

Missiles are a joke. Still. They got slight buffs but they're still crippled by PD, which any fleet of decent size will have enough of to completely neutralize the offensive missiles of an equally sized fleet. Speaking of PD the best PD is flak cannons, which come from researching autocannons in kinetics, and fighter squads. Fighters are also weak to PD but are surprisingly effective against corvettes and extremely long range, they also come out in a fucking huge swarm since you get 8 per hanger bay, if they get shot down they don't replenish until your fleet leaves combat though.
The singular exception to missiles being shit are energy torpedoes which are completely immune to PD.

Kinetics are just good all around. Regular railguns are good in literally every situation, the best PD guns, flak, come from the autocannon path, kinetic artillery are the best L slot gun in the game except against the scourge who have no shields so plasma takes that spot there, and autocannons will turn corvette swarms into finely scattered space dust in record time once they actually get into range, said range and lack of shield damage bonus makes them kinda shit against anything else though.

If you have any specific questions I can probably help out.

I use them for most of the game. Plasma is obviously the best, but not until you're fighting crisis or fallen empire level of battleships. I'd still use them(partially) against Unbidden as well.
The main point to using them is the fact that you're already all up in that tree to get railguns and flak and kinetic artillery. With armor being relatively shit and missiles being complete trash; kinetics, minerals and starport tech is about all you're researching in engineering.
While I save getting through the plasma line for later because you're getting the energy techs, ship generators, ai, sensors, ship ai, ship engines, shields and some important rare building techs earlier in the game.

The core of China, where their civilization originated and is strongest, sits in the sub-tropical zone, same as Japan and the southeastern US. So technically it could go either way if you consider Continental to be the 'temperate' planet, as sub-tropical is in-between that and true tropical environments.

However, Continental also represents diverse environments instead of mono-biomes like the others, suits a country like China that stretches from flat to mountainous, from wet to dry, and from tropical to alpine.
>>
>>173931383
So you load corvettes up with neutron torpedos, destroyers with all PD flak artillery, cruisers with 2 plasma cannons and 1 kinetic artillery and 1 flak artillery, and battleships with all plasma cannons/arc throwers?

Depends on what you're fighting.
Don't want too much flak. Just enough. Usually on destroyers, but not their entire loadout.
Having 1 kinetic arty is decent on destroyers because of their tracking.
Full medium slot or torpedo cruisers are best loadouts. Don't want too many energy torpedoes either as their damage is wasted past a point.
Spinal mounts are rarely even better than a normal large slot with kinetic arty or large plasma.
If you want to be completely meta just don't use battleships.

So guys, noob question.

I have a primitive civilization in the Mechanical Age in my territory, with some tasty traits (They are Strong and Natural Engineers, while my humans are Weak).

What is the correct procedure if I want to integrate them into my empire? I'm not a slaver, so I do not plan on taking them by force. Ideally they'd grow up nicely along with my ethics and then integrate into my empire where they will be happy workers at mines and engineering facilities.

Should I indoctrinate, or should I apply technological enlightenment? What's the procedure?
>>
>>173932587
I think I'd still rather use the regular railguns honestly, the lack of range and shield damage is too big a deal breaker for me. I could see them on cheap disposable no defense afterburner corvettes and destroyers but that's about it.

>armour being relatively shit
You take that back, my last game I got regenerative hull early on from crystalline entities and build my first lot of cruisers with almost no shielding but about 75% armor. They were fucking unkillable it was great.

>>173932947
I personally don't use corvette. I dislike having to replace ships that many ships and would rather replace 5 cruisers than 40 corvettes.

I usually use destroyers with 1 artillery, 2 types of cruiser, one with a single Kinetic Artillery and the rest of its slots M plasma and the other with a hanger core with fighters, M plasma on the bow and flak on the stern. Battleships are artillery in every L slot with a couple M plasma. It's not the most meta thing in creation because thats cruisers fit exclusively with M plasma, but it works and I like the versatility.

I think what you want, if you want them as a controllable species and planet, is to infiltrate them. That requires some tech that I don't think you'll have for a while.

If you aren't bothered about war, you could enlighten them which will create a new civ on the map based on those aliens. You then conquer them with the purpose of vassalisation, and eventually integrating them, giving you their planets, pops, fleets, etc.

Armor isn't that bad but it's still worse than stacking shields and slapping a capacitor on them.

The damage makes up for the lack of range, honestly with the way the AI is you're dropping directly on top of them half the time anyway.

I still use a ton of corvettes because while the AI is busy overkilling each cruiser in turn your corvettes are doing uninterrupted damage. Their evasion really makes them cost-efficient as well. The replacement is annoying but it isn't like it's more expensive than fewer bigger ships at the end of the day.

I don't go full meta in the late game but until that point it's pretty much auto-cannons all day.

I still use Lances on the few battleships I get because I love them so much. I miss their meta.

What are some fun builds to play as in Banks? I went Fanatic Materialist Militarist, and I was bored as fuck with a 100+ year period of peace. I want to try and play Tall now that it is semi-viable, but I want to make war with xeno-scum and make them client-states while doing it.

>>173936230
Yeah yeah. It's still a flaccid thing to say. 40k isn't anything special, edgy things happening in an edgy universe isn't particularly engrossing, especially when 99% of the important players just have developed ways to drown everything out and maintain the status quo. It's a neat sandbox to simulate small engagements, as a whole it's a creative wasteland.

Shit like Slaanesh isn't particularly noteworthy either. It's nothing neat and lovecraftian. It's not even human. It's a race of debauched not-humans who are more debauched than humans just because, oh and their debauchery per capita is magically magnified just because.
This reached too high a threshold just because.
Which ruined everything, just because. But not everything, just because.

Not him but it is grimdark edgy shit.
Not that there is anything wrong with that in theory, and there are some legitimately neat facets to the setting, like the sad irony of the astronomican and the tyranids, but even that is shot full of plotholes.

But having the bulk of your setting be inescapable doom faced by fanatical pawns is just an awful idea.

Any interesting perspective is deliberately eschewed in favor of boring fight identical to all other boring fights in the setting.

Anything that isn't Dark Eldar, Imperial Guard or the old, less grimdark Tau is just the same monotone soup.
>>
>>173937356
>But having the bulk of your setting be inescapable doom faced by fanatical pawns is just an awful idea.
No it isn't, not for a tabletop game. The entire point of the 40k setting is to make any conceivable match between any factions make canonical sense
>>
>>173936807
>>173937356
it used to be funny, more ironic grimdark edgy shit (which is honestly how you should treat it, its how I treat it) but it gets super fucking cringe and autistic when you have people treating it like fucking gospel and preaching about how amazing it is. Even worse when they complain about things like dawn of war 3 not being grimdark because of its artstyle, showing that they only care about the most shallow part of the setting.

Depends on how many colonies you have. Do the math for your situation.
number of tileblockers on planets you have and will colonize x100.
That is how many minerals you will gradually receive by the time your colonies have grown to the point that you would want to remove them normally.

>>173937459
That obviously goes without saying. But that isn't dichotomous to otherwise compelling setting and narratives.
Yeah sure its setting allows for the tabletop, it could still have depth and give you reasons to care for the setting at large. But it doesn't, most of the time.

>>173937550
What he posted is the general example of how shit the ship balance is at the moment.

I'm not that poster but it's basic number crunching. The primary principles involved are that missiles have so many negatives going for them that their damage values are basically a third of what they should be, that ships engage in a very consistent fashion that obviously favors certain aspects and hinders others, and very basic numeracy concerning hull health x armor damage reduction being a bigger number than maximum slots available x shield health.

Cons: pops don't migrate, don't spawn automatically, have fixed build rate, have to be manually built.

There's also the relations penalty you incur with most other ethos types, especially spiritualists, to consider. Paradox really needs to add more ways to interact with factions, or change the way they spawn because it's fucking ridiculous being an authoritarian empire and having 19% of my pops be Egalitarian despite the ethics attraction estimate saying only 9% should have that ethos. And I can't do anything about them either. I spam governing ethics attraction bonuses but nothing changes. I suppress the egalitarian factions but they never drop below 2 pops before surging up again to 5 or 7 due to all the egalitarians my empire somehow has. It's fucking aggravating.

>>
>>173941924
You get 50 years to utterly rape ass, make yourself as big as possible, and cripple enemy empires.

Once the Reckoning spawns, you get a single world somewhere else, and nothing else.

The Reckoning will kill everyone else first, and then you, but everyone else will also hate you immensely. If you can survive their inevitable retribution, you'll win by being the last one standing before the storm of psychic fuck-you kills you.

Of course, this is contingent on you have a sufficiently large population before the fifty years is up; the power of the Reckoning goes up exponentially per pop (to a max of 800 pops), and so you want to give it plenty of food to make sure it kills EVERYTHING.

Pretty much; there are 3 "legitimate", non-RP reasons to do so.

1) You're about to win the game, are about to conquer this one last contender, and need the boost to break the stalemate.
2) You're in deep shit, are going to lose soon, and this is the last recourse available to you.
3) You're an utterly massive empire and have spent decades and centuries fighting with others, but you can't break the stalemate even with the boon. Instead, you bring forth the Reckoning to kill everyone, and try to survive on your own.

It's more about losses in terms of value. An 80 strength corvette being lost to a 67 research station will count more towards the opponent's score. You don't really get anything for taking down tiny things with big things.

I don't know if this is some meme but it allows shitters to win apparently so I tried it anyways

I've been thinking about armies, and the obvious solution seems to be locking invasion to the amount of tiles per planet. You're already locked to garrisoning per tile anyway.

You can BRING more armies, but you can only ever land to an upper limit, so when one army dies, you can land another.

A small minigame based on pop/tile composition shouldn't be too hard to make, either. One you can play if you want to, but one that you can easily just let do its own thing automatically.

This could also theoretically mean that you could set up defenses that could eat any army size you are piecemeal. 300 that shit.

where are you in the tech tree and how much income do you have

In early game I found spamming super cheap missile corvettes useful (assuming you can find missiles to unlock) because it can overwhelm enemy fleets before they unlock large numbers of point defence.

Once you unlock proton/neutron torpedos I generally only use corvettes with those.

Just why and yes I know the answer is that Victoria doesn't sell
The POPs are perfect for simulating ethics and racial conflict. The economy would be excellent in making spice control the universe and all that, giving planets actual character and importance beyond "more worker slots" without just straight adding output modifiers.
They had the perfect framework, they just had to tune it here and there to make it fit the setting.

Wew, basically corvette spam is only viable if you give it guns and MAYBE afterburners and nothing else, no shields no armor, nothing. You're basically throwing extremely fast extremely cheap guns into a meatgrinder to jam it. It works but its wasteful as fuck imo. Balanced fleet comps with a mainline of cruisers and smaller ships to screen them is much better I find. Battleships aren't actually bad like some people say, they're just less cost effective than cruisers since you can get more bang for your buck with them. But cmon no space fleet without an extravagant display of power.

It also sounds like your economy was garbage for some reason too.

It's easily the Paradox game that feels the most alive while still being about controlling a country instead of roleplaying a series of characters. There's a big focus on internal affairs and economy (which is in itself rare), both heavily impacted with the passage of time. Discovered technologies create new industries, goods previously rare become commonplace and new ideologies like communism find support in your population, changing voting patterns, making them push for new rights or stage revolutions.
That and imperialism is just really damn fun. There's something magical in a couple powerful countries scrambling for every bit of the primitive world. You really feel like you're playing in the big leagues while the rest of the world is just your battleground.

Those are hyperlanes, you see them if thats your FTL method or you research hyperlane mapping.

Shields are generally better than armor early and even out in the late game because armor is more important on battleships which can reach the 90% cap, cruiser too to an extend, generally you'll want your corvettes and destroyers to be pure shields while cruisers and battleships mix shields and armor.

Don't use missiles, yes use the strongest weapon you can, but make sure to pay attention, what you think is your strongest weapon might actually be trash like disruptors.

Mix your fleets, large guns can't hit small targets and small guns don't do enough damage to scratch big ships without enormous massing of them, medium guns are alright at both jobs so when in doubt more M slots never hurts, aim for a screening force of corvettes and destroyers with a main line of cruisers and a few battleships to add some long range punch

The AI is full retard about it. My ally declare war on one and got both of us punished for it, so I broke the defensive pact afterwards and refuse to sign another one.

No.

The best corvette is, yes, one chock full of shields.
But the best corvette FLEET is one where the corvettes are all gun and no defences, because quantity > quality

Not him, but I completely agree with this. Early game when they make a bulk of your force? Give them a shield it's no big deal. But late game when you have Battleships, Cruisers, Destroyers you should slap some weapons and not even bother with defenses aside from the stuff that increases their evasion. Their evasion is their best defense, they'll die if they get hit anyway so the shields don't matter.

Armor is even worse, completely useless on corvettes.
