I'm assuming you realize that doing it this way you're forced into static screens. Also, to maintain the perspective you are forced to implement a system for scaling your game objects depending on where they are, which you don't appear to be doing.

This. If you put perspective, you also have to make the player get smaller or bigger depending on its position. Otherwise there's no point in having the perspective at all and it will just look bad.

nah it'll be fine, isometric games used perspective without having scaling characters

The only way you would not notice is if the perspective change is small, in which case the no point in doing it. The example you posted is pre-rendered 3D. Don't be a pretentious fuccboi and either double-down or drop it.

Pick one and stick with it
Isometric and perspective are complete opposites
>>
>>173868930
>isometric games used perspective
Isometric is a projection. It's different from perspective.

The lack of scaling could *maybe* be ok if you're being very conservative with it but at that point you might as well just use a projection like isometric. You can quickly run into issues like this, for instance if you have a staircase or ladder close to the viewpoint and a similar staircase or ladder far away, the size of your character relative to this object can vary greatly. Since it's something the character interacts with directly it certainly matters. There's also the fact that you'd have to walk diagonal in order to walk straight in the context of your backgrounds.

Blender can render in different projection modes so why don't you just use those?

Just tried to post this image >>173869094

because agdg demanded i post progress only in the thread or it doesnt count as progress. (source: https://boards.fireden.net/vg/thread/172496196/#172565405)

if it's a staircase then it will just look a different size

So far you've just been using blender to make the same shitty backgrounds, which could be hand made if you understood perspective. That's barely prerendered 3D.

>no one is seriously going to complain
No one can complain if no one plays it
>>
>>173869397

Because you don't want to resize the character, and using something like isometric would mean you wouldn't have to.

Better dye your hair pink and start boasting about how progressive your game is going against the oppressive norms of perspective.

Here's why your approach is retarded: in the picture you posted the viewer estimates the bottom and top entrances to be approximately the same height due to, you know, the fucking perspective, but once you'd walk to the top it would be 2x your size, where as at the bottom it would be 10x. Now, -I F- you used that inconsistency as a gameplay mechanic, it would be excusable, but now you're just being a piece of shit with your 'nobody will notice'.

actually the character isn't going to walk to the bottom of the room as the exits are at the bottom of the top wall and top of the bottom wall so they won't notice because they won't get that far

if you were talking about the character movement being off that would be excusable but so far you're taloking about hypothetical whattaboutery

Flying into an autistic rage over criticism (right or not) and writing 10 angry replies per post is not a recipe for success as a game dev, familam.
You need to learn not to take criticism and shitposting personally or at least be able to take a deep breath and count to ten before deciding who to respond to and how.

You're just making a fool out of yourself right now and you're not going to get anything out of it other than a sore bum and a bad reputation. If you took this sort of approach to PR on twitter or steam you would turn away customers.

One day [namefaggot PHI] it would be nice for you to show someone who has an understanding of what a projection is as being completely apart from an understanding of linear perspective.

perspective doesn't work that way. Your perspective is all over the place. You don't even know how to construct an argument since you post an image from Baldurs gate where they use orthographic projection and just move the camera on one plane.

Just fucking draw your scene in full perspective and see how better it would look like.

I have 2 different source codes that do this, generating 2d inbetweens from keyframes

one is based on some polish guy's phd, it basically turns the individual pixels into fluid atoms and uses some fluid flow simulation physics to move from one keyframe to the other, and it can also do things like face morph like make a furry from a normal man and a normal tiger

The best thing is, he was absolutely certain that the suggested "morphing" should be much easier in 2D than in 3D, since there's one less dimension to worry about. Keep in mind, we're were using old school hand-painted sprite art, not vector animations.

The only somewhat cheating-proof multiplayer solution is a completely dumb client which only sends input to the server, and ALL physics is handled by the server which then sends positions back to the client. Which is rarely done because that requires a lot of workload on the server, which is why there are cheats and hacks for almost all multiplayer games.

There's nothing at all special about halo multiplayer, other than that it is halo. You had fun with it because it was your generic arena shooter of choice, not because it did anything better or different from the dozen or so generic console shooters that were on the market during Halo's heyday.

Even if you released for free, there is no audience on the PC for a slow, generic arena shooter with a handful of weapon and vehicle types.

I'm not sure what you're asking for exactly with this statement, but perspective is a type of projection. A projection is a a representation of higher-order multidimensional objects on a lower order multidimensional space. In this case we're talking about three dimensions represented on a 2D plane (your monitor). Any representation of 3D objects on your screen is a projection. Whether it's perspective, orthographic, isometric, dimetric, etc.

>With a great new community awareness of the project and a team with high hopes, Installation 01 was on track. Sadly, things didn't go as planned. The network API that the team used was a free verison of the full subscription-based package. Limited concurrent player count and limited calls that could be made across the server, the Installation 01 team had to make a costly decision. Using a new API that was a one time purchase and no limits, the team had to scrap everything they had of the game and start fresh. This lead to a good deal of wishful thinking, which helped them create a better foundation for the game. However, many team members were put off by this decision and decided to leave the project, causing development on the game to stall.

The wiki page for this game is just depressing.

Just make sure your game's models and textures can be changed easily with a mod.
And don't hard code any colors, maybe use a color palette image and read the colors from that, or a text file with color codes in it.

Yeah that's what I was getting at. Many games use a combination where the physics are simulated by the client too (just so that you get smooth movement on the client-side) AND on the server (to block cheating by hacked clients). Then you synchronize both and reset the player to where the server says he really is, which is a pain in the ass to implement and inevitably leads to the good old rubberbanding effects when servers are shitty/overloaded or clients from overseas have awful ping.

Which is why most indies should just avoid genres like multiplayer FPS alltogether because they simply can't afford to provide the necessary resources for a decent experience. Or already fail at the netcode part to begin with.

>without annoying players too much while waiting for their character to move a square forward after pressing forward

This shouldn't really be an issue with a "normal" ping. What's the biggest lag between input and reaction from server you're gonna get? 300ms? But sure, if you think that's already annoying (which it won't be unless it's an action game), go ahead and do movement on the client, and check now and then on the server if it's "legal". Also don't worry too much about hackers/cheaters if your game doesn't have the usual pvp which attracts that kind of faggots.
>>
>>173875959
well that'd still mean you'd have to wait 300ms each time you want to move a square.

The most important thing I want to know is how to stop players from teleporting around going at any speed they want.

I have a chunking system in place and i need to convert world coordinates to local coordates pretty often
chunks are 10 x 10 so converting world coordinate [49, 0, 0] to local coordinates should result in [9, 0, 0]
this is easily done by hitting it with a modulo
it wont work in the negative range though, as world coordinate [-1, 0, 0] needs to result in [9, 0, 0]

I worked for a big "indie" studio in Japan.
And after I quit I've been looking for work, and getting some.
I wouldn't give up uni for that, specially if you're already half way.
Tell them no, and then you keep working on your own stuff and you will be able to go to a better place in the future.
There are literaly thousands of indie studios, but only a few that are truly successful, unless it's one of those with 500k+ unit sales, with a really great salary, then I would say no.

After uni, and if you have a decent porfolio, you can easily find work by yourself.

You can even apply to them again after uni.

Sorry if this seems like I'm rumbling, but I'm sort of not paying attention
>>
>>173884425
>Unity will have the right in its sole discretion, and without prior notice to you, to suspend or disable your Unity Account or terminate the Agreement and/or your right or ability to access or use any of the Services
They make clauses like this specifically for users like gogem. Sometimes you need to just take your product out of the hands of a person ASAP without having to argue with them (because what they're doing is obviously wrong), so you make a clause allowing it. Every company does it.

https://unity3d.com/legal/terms-of-service

There are of course further obligations to not create illegal content (which child pornography is) but again they don't even need to cite that. They will just refer to their right in the TOS to disable his account and ban him from ever using Unity again.

It's a waste of resources anyway. He switched from Flash to Unity and is still making Flash games. He may as well pick up HTML5 because he's never made a "game" with any discernible physics or action needed. It's all just buttons and forms.
>>
So, I've been thinking about making myself a small project and learn something along that is not Java, Java# or Python. Is it a good idea to use an engine or should I just start from a scratch? I always felt they are a bit too blockbuildy for my taste.

>>
>>173885083
So they're just making you switch out assets for a project? That's more plain weird and less fishy.

At any rate, stay in school. Going back to uni after leaving is harder than you think, and unless they're paying above market price with benefits then it's not worth the risk. There will always be indie studios wanting credible talent, and you already have that but with a degree you'll be that much more attractive
>>
your game is ½ the game mine is

>Their games have had several million downloads. Theyre a mobile game studio and have made about 5 games so far, all of which are good quality imo. Do you regret taking the job? whyd you quit? Also if anything goes wrong I can always come back and continue uni.

I don't regret it!
But I didn't quit uni for it. Salary and hours sucked, so I quit. Now I make more money working online for roughly 20 hours a week.

It really depends on how popular that studio is. If it's a name that you think will also open doors for you when you look for another job in the future, then go for it.

Beware that this probably won't be your last job, so always update your resume, and be aware that all companies in the end go broke.

You have an out of control fetish for older men in power. I can just imagine how many times you jerked off to the fact that one Senator actually remarked on your school shooter game. Faggot.

He did the same shit to Clarent before Clarent even got rich and successful. Gogem can smell successful devs in his proximity in agdg and tries to latch onto them with gay fan art and attempts at small talk but he inevitably gets jealous and lashes out at all of them. It's pathetic. I've seen him do it with Aviary Attorney Dev, Clarent Dev, Hopoo, maybe a few others but it could have been an impersonator.

Distributing the updates randomly between the actual colonies (instead of dumb random rectangles that slice through everything) turns out to feel way less awkward than I feared. Maybe I won't even have to link update frequency to colony size, besides ignoring the most common completely still patterns. Of course it's still slow as fuck though, I'll try to at least speed it tenfold (it can dip to 5FPS if the grid is very busy).

I'm fucking around with cellular automata rules as the core mechanic of my game. There's a grid of cells that are either "dead" (black) or "alive" (pinkish), and from one frame to the next a living cell will "die" if it has too many or too few neighbours, and a dead cell will be born if it has just the right amount of neighbours. This leads to awesome emergent behaviour, look up "Conway's game of life", the first and most famous cellular automaton.

Anyway the behaviour of groups of cells is quite different depending on the rules (that is: values for how many or how few neighbours trigger a "birth" or a "death"). It often feels extremely organic and mesmerizing and unpredictable, but in a bunch of possible different ways. In my game I plan to give the player the power to switch the rules for groups of cells as the only "weapon" to fight baddies. Bullshit example: if you have a bad guy coming towards you you could make lava cells next to him switch to "quick growth" mode, or you could make the floor below him switch to "swarm mode" so he'll fall trough.

did you mean pronounces? "Godot" is a French name, trailing consonants in French words usually aren't pronounced unless the word is followed by another word that starts with a vowel sound

that being said I've heard Godot devs pronounce it with English phonetics ("go-dot" instead of "god-oh") so who knows

>>173894845
Yeah, I know it's faster, it's just that if I'm dropping out of GDscript to code something that runs faster, why not go straight to C++? Then again, I guess if you're using C# you won't have to deal with compilation (since GDNative C++ stuff has to be compiled for every platform you want to support).

>>173894754
When people say stuff like "singletons are bad" they always state it as an absolute rule when it's more of a rule of thumb. Singletons still provide benefits, but they can also create significant problems which is why you should avoid them... but if you have to keep 2 or 3 around, don't worry too much and just roll with it.

Decided to try and do Contra/Metal Slug style one-hit-you're-dead gameplay, but with somewhat generous refillable lives, so the punishment is moreso losing weapons/upgrades before boss encounters. Also made it so you can "aim" grenades, lofting them upwards if you hold Up, or slam-dunking them if you hold Down.

I've been having some fun with using Famitracker to bitcrush/compress some cheesy stock sounds too, but I'm not sure if I'm too attached to them.

Melee weapons are swappable, first new one is a baseball bat. It hits almost straight up as opposed to the crowbar, which hits almost straight forward.
Also, player velocity is added to weapon knockback, which is kinda weird, but kinda fun too. And because attacks are jump-cancellable, attacking and then jumping at the same time can cause some crazy knockback, which is cool.

Yes, dumb bullyposter. Its a niche game so it can't hide behind an aloof facade with a name like a Greek god or something. It has to immediately project "THIS IS A HACKING GAME YOU WILL BE HACKING THE MAINFRAME" in the quarter second someone looks at the logo. The counterbalance is, if someone likes hacking games, being over the top with the message won't be a detriment, since all hacking games are cheesy to some extent, its not enough to stop someone, hopefully. Googem should do a yesdev on building mystique versus "what you see is what you get"

Originally a game called rotateguy which was one of those games where you control a guy moving around a bunch of obstacles. Here's the only thing remaining from that:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP8vVuE4Dsk

Then he worked on a loli/couch simulator where you watch movies with a loli.

Then he worked on rotatevania with an artist and another guy. He quit and effectively fucked them in the project.

Alright I know some of you little boys need a talk on this, so I will remind you broken hearted sissies again.

Just because some dumb cunt left you or cheated on you and broke your heart doesn't mean you need to kill yourself or not get any gamedev work done being all sad and shit you cucks.

Time is the major enemy of all women, it only makes them uglier and lose worth with the ability to get a new casual sex relationship whenever they want from men they want fleeting with age. Unlike you Anon whose autism can be put to good use here as a male get some BANK BUCKS and have all the women you want. Time will give you more worth its one of the gifts of being a man that with time we get more money, we get more successful and reliable as we age (of course not physically however you better be lifting anyway faggot).

Focus on your games. Make game. Realize that women are mainly attracted to money. Focus on make game. Focus on your goals, worry about women after your well off with your dreams anon.Reminder that women age like milk and men age like fine wine they well go after (You) if you become successful.

You can do this Anon, unless you listen to the cucks here and on the discord that will tell you if you don't have a woman right now you're a loser. Their minds are taken over by society and women that worth is the status of having or getting pussy and there is no future worth unless you are ALREADY covered in money, thinking that way doesn't give (You) the time you need to get successful or chase your dreams and have money.

I believe in you all. (You) can do this.

Indentation shouldn't be the only way to separate blocks, though. Besides, proper IDEs indent automatically and none of them support Godot script.

For cosmetic reasons, also if I accidentally press backspace and it erases a space instead of the whole tab, it would make sense to complete the indentation with a space.

My only two problems with that is I'd prefer C#, if I was going to go with something more programming intensive, and there doesn't seem to be as much of a community around Love2D, compared to GM and Unity, which could make running into issues more difficult to get around.

To add to these two posts of mine, another reason I'm leaning more towards Unity for a 2D pixel game is because Unity seems to have more of a future than GM.
Unity as a company and platform have been growing a lot, so whatever issues a lot of people have with it, could be more easily worked out, since they're printing money off of nodevs.

Although, I could be wrong on all of that, that's just my current inference.

Not him, but that infographic has always been bullshit because it's the raw cost of hiring an entire art team to do all the work from scratch.

How many people here are paying entire art teams for their games? How many indie studios do that? Fucking none.

You can cut even more costs by just not doing insane spritework. 3D is cheaper, easier, and faster.
