I've made KoG without econ. It's a good card, can be frustrating to play against, but it isn't vital to winning.
Try using a control deck and make them use econ when its disadvantages.
Sergeant Electro, De-Spell yes, this card is great in plat or Nobleman of Extermination.

Fusions using Polymerisation were a poorly designed mechanic desu - they use way too many cards to be good in a game that's all about card advantage
Xyzs mechanic wise are a little too strong and synchros were a great idea but they made the actual cards way too strong so people would keep buying the new packs
Synchros would be great in duel links if they curate the cardpool as well as they have so far - they'd bring more options and take more skill to use fully optimally
