Originally the Reapers killed all advanced civilizations to stop them from interacting with dark energy and bringing the end of the universe sooner by increasing entropy. (this is true, look it up, it's called Heat Death of the Universe)

So they were looking for a race that would somehow fix this issue by transforming every race ''compatible'' with biotics to fix this issues somehow.
That how wasn't written yet, but basically, in the end you'd have to choose between sacrificing humanity and maybe solving the entropy problem, or destroying the Reapers and solving all that on your own.

This was hinted in ME2, with that paranoid Quarian in the opening of the game talking about dark energy, and Tali's loyalty mission with that star that's dying sooner than it should for no reason.

I ahve not been paying attention to mass effect since 3. Last time I played was back with the Extended Cut, that still left me disappointed but sated.

I have literally only started playing mass effect 1 a couple days ago after getting it off of origin.

First time playing it on a computer and first time playing it since way back then.

I felt like you the first time I played through for sure. Despite my issues with the ending, choosing synthesis hit me on an emotional level because the choices offered seemed to redeem more for the galaxy the more you gave of yourself, and watching the character you developed and put yourself into for three consecutive adventures immolate themselves like that, with the piano music playing, gave me serious goosebumps. I had to just sit down for a while after the credits and just take it all in. Leaving your soulmate (Tali/Garrus LI for me as M/FShep) was pretty devastating too, but at least theres a small comfort that they will probably be comforted by the other after you're gone, all things considered.

I'm glad I played through it post-extended cut release, I had a friend who raged pretty hard at the release ending with how badly they fucked it up by comparison.
