Turns out that with shot types that fire multiple projectiles, critical distance is about as far as you can go before some of those projectiles start to miss what you're aiming at.

I don't hate Brave HBG, I just hate siege fire. It's by far my least favorite aspect of the weapon. I'd sooner equip a shield and scope than I would seriously incorporate siege fire into my playstyle. The fact that Brave HBG's primary gimmick is siege fire makes it less than useful.

Tested it out. I didn't even know how it worked. I thought it just boosted normal 1 outright, but no, you have to hold the fire button to charge like a GS. Anyway, damage went from 9 to 72, so what, an 800% increase in damage? I'm bad at math, I guess that's how it works.

Higher level arts just increase the amount of charge shots you can do, 10 at level 3. It seems to only boost the first shot of a rapid fire volley. That's a shame, because it would've been a fun gimmick with a 5 volley RF.

Personally, I'd say the Charge Blade.
Weapons like the HBG/LBG requires a lot of knowledge, but lots of the skill of using the Bowgun correctly occurs in the planning before the hunt rather than the mechanical execution of the hunt itself, which is what I think you're referring to.
The Hammer gets a mention as well, and while the GS takes a similar kind of mechanical skill as the CB and Hammer, it's so much easier to use to a high skill level that you can consider GS to be a mid to low-skill weapon.

The only other weapons that are similarly difficult to use at a basic level as the CB are the Gunlance and Bow, but I feel like the Bow takes a lot less to learn adequately and the Gunlance is just... unfortunate.

He's using S+2 (not sure about Razor Sharp) with Sacrificial Blade.
The Silverwind Narga LS has 300 / 20% Affinity compared to the 330 of Mantis, but it does not require S+2 and charges Arts 25% faster. This is a big deal, as he casts Sacrificial Blade about 30s before Raj dies. Charging the Art faster would mean that he spent a larger portion of the fight during Sacrifical Blade. Based on his crit rate against the Hermitaurs as he charges his Brave gauge, the extra Affinity on Silverwind wouldn't overcap his Affinity even with Challenger+2 active (20+50+15).
Not only is Silverwind better by virtual of not requiring S+2, but it functionally has higher raw for that run due to the faster second Sacrificial Blade (not always relevant, the fight may take long enough that Sacrificial Blade goes through its full duration twice, but cannot be cast a third time even with Deviant LS).

The extra three slots of the Mantis weapon aren't a good excuse because, again, you're literally freeing up 15 points of Handicraft from your set.

So, why do Mantis weapons dominate TA's? I think it's because we're still early in XX's life cycle and the meta hasn't fully developed yet.

I was labouring under the misconception that they had the same amount of purple. I was wrong, Mantis appears to have 20 or so more hits. Regardless, freeing up 15 skill points and being able to use Sacrificial Blade sooner still makes Silverwind Superior, at least for that specific hunt.

Okay, so we've established that they're both using RS.
The ECECE build means RS as well as S+2. On the Fatalis SA, that means you're spending 15 skill points for Attack Up S, 30 Dragon, and a longer purple sharpness bar that allows you to delay casting Readiness if it comes up at an inopportune time.

These are small differences, but the Fatalis SA IS superior to Mantis against Dragon weak monsters.

Assuming that monster would rage half the time, Challenger 2 would give you an average 10 raw and 7.5% affinity over the course of the hunt. Also note that when the monster's in rage you'd have less opportunity to hit it so it would make Challenger's buff even less in the long run.

Are you saying that the damage from Punish draw's KO can make up for the 20 raw difference?
