I think it has something to do with his coloring. I'm not an artist myself, so it's not like I can do more than speculate here, but this is what I think.

One thing I see a lot of his designs have in common are the big, simple spaces. If you look at how the characters dress, I think you will be able to see what I mean. There's not a lot of detail on the fabrics themselves and each article of clothing has typically has a uniform coloring. I'm not saying they have to look like Moriarty, Quetzalcoatl, Merlin, or anything such. It's just a thing I picked up on, about Nakahara's designs. The designs aren't very busy and they have large, uniformly colored surfaces. It should make for quick and easy coloring. In that sense they're very functional designs.

I don't know where I was going with this, but I think I was trying to say that I think I can see how Nakahara's designs are influenced by the way he works.
