I've been on this general since the beginning and the shipfags and comicfags have NEVER been this bad. We've always had a lot of interest in the comic here (hell that's how this general started in the first place) but usually the threads were a good mix of game discussion, tv discussion, comics, complaining about <anything sonic related but not really /sthg/ itself>, etc. It was never JUST about the games or JUST about the comics. Lately it feels like it's always about the comics, specifically shipping. It's like as soon as we figured out the comic might be cancelled, the shipfags just went into overdrive. January. And this place was still chugging until the Forces news. Well, when it wasn't being killed by thread-long shitposting arguments which were really just 2 samefags repeating the same 5 arguments we've had for the past 2 years just with a new coat of fucking paint.

News comes out too infrequently for it to be supported by only that, and it's a long way until Mania releases, and then Forces, which will probably support a lot of discussion on release. Sega has numerous internal studios, the thing is only two studios are working on Sonic games and one of them is Olympics. They can get around with third-party studios. They already have Stealth/Taxman/etc working on Mania and can branch that off into a full-fledged side-series. They have Sanzaru working on Boom games but I don't think anyone gives a fuck about Boom so instead they can get Sanzaru or someone else to do boost games. I know people shit on Dimps' level design, but boost games really don't need tight level design so they'd be fine reviving Rush as another side-series. They definitely have the budget to do this.

The main problem is that Iizuka doesn't have a single solitary clue about how to make Sonic actually work well in 3D. He needs to be replaced with someone who's actually not incompetent.

She was boiled down to a few basic traits which are then exaggerated to a point akin to that of a character from episodic Saturday morning cartoon. I remember when SA2 came out and enjoying it.

Sonic Adventure DX was a terrible port of a decent game. Somehow they made the game worse despite it being for a more powerful console.

Then Heroes came out. Wasn't a fan. But it wasn't horrible.

After that, Shadow the Hedgehog. No.

And then, Sonic 2006.

I thought the bad games would never end.

Sonic Unleashed was okay. The Werehog stages almost made it unplayable though.

Finally we got Colors which was great. Not perfect, but still pretty great.

So that's what... 6-8 years of bad games (depending on if you count the silence between SA2 and Heroes). If Forces is bad, we could be entering the new longest Sonic drought (not counting Mania of course).

Keep in mind, in the time period between the end of X and the announcement of Boom, the only thing Sonic had was the games and the comics, the latter being pretty niche and ultimately irrelevant when it comes to mainstream notice (unless they do something retarded like have Sonic crying on a cover). Sonic's relevance will always be tied to the games, everything else is extra.

1) Increased liability for Sega when it comes to anything stupid that Archie does (see: Penders and Fulop). Keeping the comics at arms-length helps insulate them from it.
2) If the comics are too much like the games then nobody is going to buy the comics because there's no point reading the comics when you can just watch the game cutscenes on YouTube and get the same thing.

The comics need to stand on their own in order to have any kind of relevance, and that includes original storylines and characters.
