Type-Moon tries to create new female characters that people want to fuck. They're starting to realize that this is the wrong approach. You can't create a waifu: you have to let it develop.

Jeanne Alter, for instance, was intended as a one-off boss. But when people liked her, they realized they could exploit that to their benefit. And lo and behold, it has worked. They're also starting to realize that they can milk a lot out of characters like Arthur and Dantes if used strategically.

Saber, Rin, and Sakura still have a lot of tactical power. Saber especially - her devoted fans are mindless. They have to be more careful with the others. That's why we're stilling waiting on Ere-chan - they need time between Ishtar release and hers to limit the Rinsposure.

A much less contrived reason for his rage would be if he simply misunderstood Artoria's intentions and that's the reason why he killed his fellow knights. So he goes mad with rage at her, because he projects his way of thinking onto her and can't see that she really didn't hold enmity against him. Not that he end mad because he wants to be punished, he's just mad because he really thinks she was out to get back at him and Guinevere, and he lived out his life under that misunderstanding.

When they meet in Zero he lashes out against her, she blames herself, but as he later understands that he was the one pushing his issues onto her and that he was the one at fault, and then you get the resolution of him assuring Artoria of her excellence as king.

This largely keeps both their character arcs intact and is thematically consistent with the Fate material. The stuff about him going crazy because she wouldn't punish him is just an extra hoop to jump through, and it doesn't make much sense to have it in the first place. The only function I can see it filling is that it means he has already admitted to his faults, but that's also not really necessary for him to do and it makes their conflict in Zero seem nonsensical.

I fucking hate when Masters get involved in a Servant's battle outside of support. I'm glad Nasu dropped that shit in other works. UBW route was the definition of cancerous Master fighting Servant shit and getting away with it I fucking hate it. Not just Shirou, but also Rin and Kuzuki. It was just completely out of place now in Fate franchise where Masters stay behind Servants like they should. Or fight other Masters.

The endings were pretty bad too. That's why Nasu had to rewrite it for the anime. Originally, it lacked any actual touching sense of conclusion than HF or Fate endings did.
