How do you feel that Total Warhammer has been doing so far, in terms of accurately replicating the setting and the wargame?

Personally, my biggest concern is that it's too stagnant - there's little to no excuse for you to fight factions not on your immediate borders, or for them to attack you. You aren't getting the large variety of enemies one would hope for.

Might be cool as some sort of screen that pops up and you position you're naval ships on a drawn sea map and then auto-resolve it.

The wargame understandably has a much bigger emphasis on customization and some funky rules which don't really translate well into total war games, but as far as the setting goes it's great. It only makes me want a really detailed RPG set in the warhammer world since you only really see the military side of it in total war games.
As far as fighting other factions goes, it's a consequence of how the objectives for each faction works at the moment, and I wouldn't be too surprised to see missions that try to encourage you to do more exploring in the new game, like going to Estalia as the Lizardmen and burning down a few of their cities because they took some of your artifacts, or something. HElves are world police so they'll likely get tasked with beating back chaos back in the old world as well as whatever comes out of the portal, if anything. DElves need raiding to sustain themselves and raiding random fucks in the old world will probably be safer than trying to raid Ulthuan. Skaven are pretty much everywhere and everyone hates them, so I doubt they will be able to sit back that much.

The thing is though CA has to work with what they're given. Rome 2's naval combat could have been a bit better, but really it was pretty accurate for the time period barring the glaring lack of corvus.

Warhammer naval combat is nothing like historical naval battles though. You have fliers, magic, sea monsters, and dwarves even have goddamn submarines. It would be as much of an improvement on sea battles as WH was to land ones.

I mean, I really just want to watch a Dark Elf sea monster rip apart a High Elf ship. This would be nothing like Roman galley combat, and the fact so many people can't see that is just distressing for me.

If the DLC race is tomb kangs, it depends on what their legendary lords are.
If one of them is Arkhan, he could have an excuse to try and use the vortex to ressurect Nagash, or something.
As for Settra, who will definitely be one of the LL's, it's hard to say why he would be interested unless it would just be to stop Arkhan or he figures he can conquer the world by controlling the vortex for whatever reason.

Nurgle would probably be hit or miss, on one hand he loves his followers. On the other hand he considers despair and joy to be the same thing, so he might make you suffer because he thinks it will make you happy.

As for Tzeentch, no clue. On one hand if he has a plan for you, you're at least guaranteed to survive for quite some time. On the other hand, he has a plan for you, which means you're probably going to be fucked over really hard some time in the future. At best you can hope that he wants you to be the one doing the fucking the majority of the time.

Nurgle isn't bad.

I mean, as you are, his gifts are fucking nightmarish. For those infected with them, they aren't bad at all. The maggots and flies make for good company, and your nerves being completely rotted away means that you can ignore the physical and focus on the emotional warmth he and his followers offer.

Still nightmarish though, and only a hair better than Slaanesh and Tzeentch's blind dartboard of mutations and gifts.

Because here's the thing. Nurgle loves life. He loves you, he loves your family and he wants nothing more than for you to be happy.

However, he loves all life equally. Including bacteria. And those bacteria need you to live. So he throws those bacteria at you, because it's selfish in his eyes for you to want to live at the cost of those bacteria's death. But he'll bless you if you call out to him, so that both you and the bacteria can live. It'll even stop hurting after a bit.

Nurgle is the Chaos God of Despair, but also the endurance needed to overcome despair. As such, he gives his followers perhaps the greatest hell of any Chaos God, but gives them such strength of character and will that it doesn't seem bad to them.

Tzeentch is too much of a wild card and I really don't think I'd be of use for his MASTERPLANS. Probably won't receive any benefit from him either

Almost every race should have formations. It doesn't need to be as deep as Attila or Rome 2. Just a few would be more than fine.

Wedge formation for cavalry. Shield Wall for infantry. Sparse/Dense toggle for every single unit. A box formation to shield siege or important units like spellcasters. Not much else.

I just realized how much of a nightmare a siege battle vs lizardmen will be. Some of the best infantry in the game manning the walls making their slow speed irrelevant. Skirmishers and towers to make sitting back impossible. Flying units to prevent you from just flying over the walls. Powerful magic to spare.

Yeah, in the hands of the AI they will still find a way to fuck it up, but I don't think it would be possible in a balanced match up vs a human player.

In the middle of a Chaos campaign now. Really getting sick of these Norse fucking shits. Their armies seem to manage to stay just out of reach, so I'm playing whack-a-barbarian burning their villages and having them rebuild them behind me. They keep wiping out my vassals, and if I say fuck it to go kill the Empire, they jump me during a siege with 4 armies. They don't win, because they're a bunch of inbred barbarians and I have Chosen, but they'll weaken me enough that I can't take the upgraded garrison + army that seems to inhabit most places so I have to retreat.

I really love the Warriors of Chaos roster, but I can see why people hate the campaign. Getting the ball rolling feels like a struggle.

The new historical title has to start from scratch unless it's just going to be nothing, but reskins once again. An expansion/standalone title was always going to have a significantly shorter development time than a brand new game. Kislev and Tilea have had small army lists in the past. They will be in the game only if all other DLC has been made and GW gives the go-ahead. Since CA's license for warhammer ends in 2023 it'll have been 8 years since the end of WHFB and GW will probably care less about "but kislev hasn't had an army list since 5th edition" by that point in time.

The shaders they used in Attila were really high fidelity stuff, makes the game look great but damn does it eat up performance.
In contrast most shaders in Warhammer are really more like late-update Rome 2, which can look grungy. Certain battle maps look really weak in Warhammer probably cause they didn't want to create a performance controversy. So look at the Underway battle maps, underground Karak battle maps, Badlands battle maps... generally really quite low fidelity shader treatments. Of course, CA being CA, they give VC a really nice balanced shader treatment that looks good and performs well. There's also a really nice shader set for the darker forests of the Empire lands, reminiscent of Attila.

Now some people want them to strip away resources from the land rosters to give each faction a completely unique naval roster. They would have to make it so transport ships cant fight. There is no way they could balance those units or have the time to actually make it work.

So naval combat would be naval v naval ships and auto resolve for naval v transport

The whole idea is stupid. Let CA work on what matters which is the campaign and ground combat, they have a lot of work to do as is.

I was just pointing that out as another example of why naval combat wouldn't work in TW without a massive rework that would eat too much time and resources. The main reason to have naval combat is to protect transports, but if you can't have transports without autosolve or you have to somehow explain why 40 pirates can kill a giant then the whole concept becomes trash. It's the same principle of the extra Welf factions in the Athel Loren mini-campaign being "cut" from the Grand Campaign. Detail, settlement and faction count is lost as you upgrade to a larger map.

Like the other guy said, you only have an incentive to do it if you are playing a horde-only faction, same as in Warhammer. Huns and White Huns can't settle. They burn shit down. As regular factions you only want to raze stuff to cripple an enemy that you don't want to occupy just yet.

The way that Warhammer has benefits to hording and raiding and pillaging that go beyond simply income or some miniscule +2 to happiness makes me think for a future historical total war they just need to consider that whole asymmetrical campaign design if they want to repeat the unique playstyle dynamic.

For instance if you were repeating Rome 2 judging from what Strabo and others wrote of the Germans of Caesar's time they should have the ork's fightiness mechanic. Germanic men did nothing but fight or lay-about and feast and fuck. So if you don't have any fighting going on your men start to desert and suffer 'attrition' as they seek to be companions of a warlord or king who will bring them booty and prestige.

Going further with other warhammer style mechanics,

If you're doing the dark ages the Muslims could have a major Baraka mechanic. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barakah ) basically the arab version of the Chinese mandate of heaven. In more recent times when the French lost to the Nazis they suffered a catastrophic loss of Baraka in the eyes of their Arab/Berber subjects and it encouraged resistance and rebellion. When various turn of the century Moroccan chieftains got smashed by the French in some great battle they almost always lost their confederacy because of the loss of Baraka.

So for Arab/Muslim states there's a sink or swim mechanic. If you aren't making major inroads in conquest or technology or infrastructure and are just kind of turtling you get more unrest and more disloyalty from your generals.

I don't see the expansion being just Daemons or just Chaos, but it really does put me in a bind of figuring out where they can go from here.

-They aren't required to have 4 brand new races being the flagship playables, and they are running out of options now (Tomb Kings, Chaos Dwarfs, Ogre Kingdoms, Daemons. First three can work on a map but the last not really unless a plot device introduces them a'la the Vortex. Maybe some Chaos Dwarf experiment opens up a warp in the dark lands.

-Someone suggesting the expac just being the four Chaos Lords. This would mean Chaos dwarfs and Ogres have to get added in somewhere else and the expansion doesnt' cover the darklands. Also maybe it's because I am generally not a fan of Chaos but the idea of a DLC entirely in the chaos wastes sounds fucking terrible. Maybe you could do Chaos wastes + Naggaroth and Uthuluan + Empire region. Yeah, ad there's nothing saying they can't have some of the old part of the map in the expansion, since it's a standalone. So you might have the badlands with the tomb kings/darklands/ogre kingdoms, and then the hung and north of them the daemons.

If they want they could nix out Araby but I am hopeful they'll be added given it's not going out of the way to feature it, though the red line is what the map would be with the blue being what could be added or cut to the last expac. You don't really need the badlands I just figured it might be odd to stop at the deserts north of deadlands.

With Welves you can kind of do a bit of everything, and pretty much all their units are strong
Equinefucker army? Easy, got a great variety of powerful missile cav and high quality melee cav
Dorfbox army? Easy, Eternal Guard with Shields are high quality stuff, and Tree Kin can go forever, and you have archers which can deal with almost any kind of unit (Starfire for AP, Swiftshiver for massive damage to unarmoured)
Flier Army? Pretty Easy, Hawk Riders, Forest Dragons, Eagles, just need a good anvil on the ground to really the most out of the Eagles and Dragons
Chaos style Melee March of Death Army? Eternal Guard with Shields, War Dancers, that's a party baby

Which is hilarious because Spain started out with the fucking horrid yellow uniforms that only got changed later.

Empire was bad. I say this as a man who loved the game and spent hundreds of hours on it. It was really damn bad. What's sad is that the good content for it got splattered across a bunch of different stuff. The fleshed out Americas map and Native factions are in the Warchiefs campaign, while all the polish and interesting mechanics got put in Napoleon. The whole Empire release period really was just a tragedy on multiple levels, because there was the seeds of a fantastic game in there, but CA just couldn't get their shit together in time.

It's why I'm looking forward to WH the most out of a TW in a long time. CA is actually being given the money and time to sit down and really pound out a lot of work on just one game. Which should make it fantastic when the whole project is done.

Problem is, paid DLC gets you two factions and four new lords for sixty fucking dollars. To put that into perspective for you, the game launched with five factions for sixty dollars. The paid DLC are disgustingly priced. It's seriously unreasonable no matter how you slice it.

Thats part of the feel of Warhammer Fantasy. One one hand, you have these pretty regular humans going about their daily lives ripping each other off on cheese deals and joking about shagging each others sisters. Then you have these millenia old titans of war and sorcery struggling to save the world or feed the world to cosmic beings of near limitless power and evil.

And those tiny little humans could be just errantly brushed away at any moment by any of these forces, and often they are. Theirs lots of stories of whole villages being destroyed because a wandering giant didnt watch where he was going. And thats what makes the empire special; they are regular shitty people fighting against unlimited cosmic power in the name of ale and that girl they love back home with the two missing front teeth.
