Just a little heads-up:

Learn C++ and JavaScript for your game. Those are the two programming languages that are definitely needed to develop a game. C++ fpr almost everything, JavaScript for details that you are just too fucking lazy to do in C++. Like if you have subtitles, create a list of strings for all the subtitles in your game with JavaScript, and reference them from the file in your C++ code. Don't learn Java, don't learn Python, C++ and JavaScript.
>>
>>172498007
The engine I'm using doesn't support those languages.
>>
>>172498007
>don't learn Python, C++ and JavaScript.
Alright, I'll keep that in mind. I won't learn Python, C++, and JavaScript.
>>
>>172498087
What the fuck are you using? If it doesn't support them, ditch the fucking language. Really, if it doesn't support JavaScript, it's fine, just use C++ for the subtitles, but if your engine has NO C++ support WHAT-SO-EVER, ditch it. It's a shit engine if so.
>>
>>172498007
>create a list of strings for all the subtitles in your game with JavaScript,

Did you know that a comma breaks up phrases as well as adds pauses? It's called a compound-sentence. It would be like if I had 2 strings, the first string named String1 that said "Don't learn Java, don't learn Python, " and the second name String2 that said "C++ and JavaScript. I could type "cout<<String1<<String2<<endl;". The final result would be "Don't learn Java, don't learn Python, C++ and JavaScript.". Here's a little tip for the next time you read that, note how I said "Don't learn Java, don't learn Python," but then I said "C++ and JavaScript alone. WITHOUT the "don't learn".

Make a CYOA game using folders, notepad documents, file shortcuts and so forth to represent the game's 'engine'. Players must follow the game's rules written in notepad documents and follow the story in order, on their honor. For instance you may open a 'forest' folder which has 3 notepad documents, each a choice of direction the player can go. They must read the document and then navigate to the next folder or document based on what choice they made. The game can also have several difficulties. The hard mode basically forces the player to navigate to the worst folders and always take the worst option in dialogue and quest choices.

Tell the players how to set up their desktop with a 'character' icon (this shortcut is actually their character in the game) and have them perform turn based battles against an opponent that uses predetermined 'moves' set in notepad documents and folders.

Whenever the player uses their move they have to click on the enemy's folder, find the defenses folder, and then click on what attack they used. If they used the right attack, they defeat, knock back, or otherwise injure the enemy. Several file folder icons would be their own player health and mana on the desktop.

Have a branching storyline with multiple factions the player can join, which determine what file folders and desktop icon they get to use.

All graphics are drawn in MSPaint.

Finally, use windows movie maker to create the different endings depending on what faction you joined, your ending karma, and how many of your allies died during the game.

It's literally that easy. Why haven't you made a game yet?

If we were all in the same room what would we be talking about?

God why? Steam already gets free money from all the games people put up there and they get a cut without any work on their own. Making it cost 1000 bucks will just limit the number of small budget titles people want to upload.

>>172500001
Reported. Not game related.
>>
>>172500095
My assumption is that Steam wants to limit the weapon-grade low quality shit. Greenlight is filled with games that will never make $50, but drag down the overall reputation of Steam.
>>
>>172500095
>Making it cost 1000 bucks will just limit the number of small budget titles people want to upload.

>>

Probably $100 or a bit more. They're charging per game now so I don't see why it has to be a lot more expensive than Greenlight.

Progress for today: The enemy now regularly mixes up their guarding state, making it harder to just get free hits off on them unless you understand how their AI works.

What's the best way to handle window resizing in a 2D game?

>A) Scale all the pixels upwards
>B) Keep the pixel size the same and just show more of the map
>C) Or design different versions of your game for all the different aspect ratios
>>
>>172500286
>>172500274

Budget =/= shit quality.

Shorter games with lower costs to produce and developers who have lower scope are being bared easy access into selling their games on steam, which is a shame. Quality control on steam greenlight doesn't mean you had to shut it down, or make it so only large indies and heartbreaker dream games can get on their. It's a shame.
>>
>>172500445
I have a real game to make

The idea is actually very cool. I think I would use xp or 2000, on a self-bootable usb. You can make folders with passwords, right? That's an easy way to gate content.

You can also do things like have a mspaint file with a grid of numbers, and you need the key that you find in another file. there might be some tricks you can pull with hidden images and the paint bucket too. Like fill 3 colors in the right order to reveal another password.
>>
>>172500550
A/B, depends if it's okay for the player to see more/less depending on their window size. For a competitive online game, that would be a no-no. C is obviously not the best way. Make sure you letterbox instead of stretching pixels into rectangles when aspect ratios don't match and you're scaling up.
>>
>>172496641

Depends on the type of game, if it's a strategy/tycoon type of game then expanding the camera is best, but also add separate UI and graphics scale options.

If it's something with a fixed camera then a global window scale makes more sense, you shouldn't ever manually make different versions of your game.

B) if your gameplay can take it without shittinh up balance or level design. But keep it within a certain range. So you design the game around say being 360 pixels tall. For a 720 screen, that means that its 2x scale. From 720 - 1080, it stays 2x scale but the amount you can see gets bigger, until you hit 1080, then it snaps to 3x scale, until it hits 1440, etc etc.

I wanted to do this for a jam game but couldnt figure out the code in time.

Yes. The animation the opponent is using is the high block animation, because sprites for the low block don't exist yet and sprites to indicate that the opponent has successfully blocked are not yet implemented. I'm not doing a up/down animation because it's a Binding of Issac style game so basically I'm going to make his legs and his torso up two seperate entities, with his legs moving left to right and his torso arms and head turning to the 4 cardinal directions.

You know the old artist mantra right?

Not good enough to do it? Improve.

Too hard to improve? Hide it!

Don't give the character legs. Just make them have a torso/body, or make it like Rayman with little feet entities separate from the torso.

Where did you guys learn your programming languages? Right now I'm doing the Javascript course on codecademy but I feel I'm not learning much besides the syntax of the language. I like the do it yourself approach it has though as I learn better from doing things myself than getting told or shown.

Also I'm having trouble understanding why some things that I write work while others don't. Is this something that goes away as you learn more about coding, am I retarded or what? I can put a computer together no problem but that's way easier than coding I feel now that I actually know something about it.

Anyway some of you guys have amazing looking games and I want to get to that point too eventually and it just seems like the start is the hardest part.

>>
>>172505998
Let the confusion lead you.
>Huh, if I change this it breaks
>But now this fixes it
>What if I do this.. Okay hmm... Now this?

If I remember Codecademy has a kind of in-browser editor. I'd say to "take notes" by writing that code in your own external browser, and fucking with it, changing things, seeing what breaks it, etc. Throw in print statements to see values (but don't shy away from learning proper debug, eventually). Try to think up what kind of little project would be possible with what you're learning, and go ahead and try to make it. A calculator, a pointless little calendar app, whatever. Then incorporate new things you learn into your toy project.

Well obviously the main reason is for game dev, but following that I want to fall back to web dev or any other sort of programming related field if I can. I really just want to work with computers as a career in any way and games are a passion of mine, so I figured I'd try my hand at game dev and if it doesn't work out the skills will be applicable to other fields.

As for what I want to build, the first thing I want is to make a 2D or 2.5D action platformer kind of like Shoot Many Robots (basically just a linear platformer with hordes of enemies and bosses) with a roster of diverse wizards (not generic wizards, shit like a gun wizard that summons different kinds of guns, a chef wizard that uses different types of food to buff allies etc). Moving on to ARPGs/RPGs in general, Shooters, Puzzle games, basically I don't want to just be an idea guy.

If you're just starting out, you could try Pygame, which is a Python library.

There's also a pretty good website for learning common game paradigms called "invent with python". The section with the snake holding a flask gives you a decent introduction and overview of pygame.

When you're done that, you can continue to the section with a squirrel on it, which teaches you some more advanced concepts.

I love pygame for its ease of access, but it's a shame you can't embed them in webpages. Still, I think it's a pretty good stepping stone.

Their numbers come from Quantic Foundry, it's a self-reported census so grandmas/kids are less likely to actually create a profile in it unless they want access to the data.

The entire point of the research was to see if the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) numbers of female gamers, which usually bundles people that opened Solitaire at least once in the last year with console/pc gamers holds any truth when you target a more select group.

The only thing the ESA got right was females preferring casual games.

First of all it's not turn-based or anything whatsoever LIKE ROGUE.

Not everything that uses proc-gen has to be a "roguelike". What's wrong with the term "roguelite"? Or just sandbox survival?
You're ruining the term's meaning by putting so many different games under its umbrella.

By that criteria Rust/DayZ/Minecraft are also roguelikes since mechanically they're identical (random generated map survival game where you start from 0 and start building shit)

Yes, you can show fucking if they are under a blanket with no genitalia being show, only tits. But you have to keep in mind, it would be much easier to just release an 18+ patch like what all visual novel games do on steam.

So, can I ask once again, is there anything else beyond literally showing primary sexual organs, Steam wouldn't publish?
Because I'm not making a porn game or anything like that, I just want to know if there are things to avoid, in case anyone here knows, so I don't have to read some retardedly bloated TOS statement.

i mean if you wanted to be really masochistic you could do all the isometric -> 2d math that you would do in any engine, then do the 2d -> unity math on top of that. unless you really like handdrawing isometric assets you should go full 3d with iso camera.
>>
>>172517259
>>172517293
Serious? No wonder I can't find tutorials.

I wouldn't have to do any 3D models for that? They've never really agreed with me and I'm unsure if they'd mesh with the aesthetic I'm going for at the skill level I could realistically get to before I'd like to start the project.
>>
>>172517593
you would have to do 3d models. alternately, you can use billboarded sprites in a 3d environment, which has its own set of problems

if you're set on 2d assets, try just looking for generic 2d unity tutorials. probably something with a tilemap. tiled, an editor program, is popular and has isometric support out of the box.

iirc you can place isometric assets in a normal grid if you cut the sprites right.

is your game fixed to a grid, or free movement? this also might affect things.

post the style you want and some more info on the game

I'm a bit self conscious about posting too much about it until I have something to show because progress it going to be really slow for me, especially as I work out how to put things together. I don't want to come across as an ideas guy and discount my game before I've even really gotten to into it yet. I figure the best way to get around this is to show off what I've done once I have at the very least a little man running about on the screen. But as it turns out I need a bit of a nudge in the right direction to get even there it seems. I feel like you guys must get a shitload of people who are just starting out with their projects and you've got to be tired of them.

The game will be on free movement up until combat started. At which point the grid comes down and the game steps over to a turn based system where movement is locked to said grid. I figure one of the steps while the battle is getting said up would be kicking the characters into the square where they most fit, while dealing with turn order and changing to the battle sprite. So I guess in terms of implementing it it would be free movement, right?

Thanks for the help dude. I really appreciate it.

Its "photorealistic" textures and shapes rendered at low Dos era (i think 320x240) resolutions with basic or no lighting, then cleaned up/iluminated/detailed by profesional artists that know how composition works. For instance - that Fallout UI is amazing, but still designed in a way that it doesnt take away focus from the gameplay.

Skinning is finally done, I think it's mostly good enough. Just need some morph targets to prevent for example the legs from deforming unnaturally. This would have gone so much faster if I had self discipline :( still needed: morph targets, unwrap, texturing, normal map from a high poly with skin wrinkles etc and then animations.

So, what program do you guys prefer to animate with? I only used Motion Builder previously but that's like 1.8k euros a year. And also: how the heck do you texture a human being? Just get some skin materials and slap them on?

The winning condition is not being it. As long as you're not it you're winning. You're over-complicating it by assuming that winning needs to end the game.

Alternative: The winning condition is not being it by the time the game is over at a determined point ie. when mum comes to pick you up.

Making tutorials is whoring yourself out while ensuring nobody wants to play the types of games you teach to make.

It's soul-crushing, have a look at any of the interactions with the viewers:

>hey guys, just a quick mockup of what I'll teach next, hop u liek <3 (it's actually finished, by I'm shielding myself from negative comments)
>omg, I want it now! gimme gimme
>aw, thanks, it will come out next week, be sure to check back then!
>will do, keep rocking man!
>thanks, you too

How can you participate in this and still feel complete is beyond me.

It's extremely feasible to make a game while self taught. Furthermore, CS won't actually benefit you in gamedev nearly as much as you think.

People who work programming for a living often find themselves completely at a loss on how to make a game from the ground up (according to a good number of them I've personally spoken to).

You could focus more on visual stuff, though (depending on the type of tutorial).

Very visual 3D graphics / effects shit might be good for monetized tutorials.

Or you could make your dry shit easier to understand with charts and visuals to explain wtf is going on.

if you take a look at the comment sections of everything related directly to this game, you will realize that its target audience is a bunch of normos who 25 years ago punched nerds who played dragon warrior on nes in the face and shoved their heads into the toilet
they look at it like "hey, this man who is just like me has a dream i want to have sex with this man but since there are 223 miles between us i will settle for giving him a modest two hundred dollars"

Finally got my status effect system working after a nasty bout of coder's block! Woohoo!
Distance based effects (auras), duration based effects (like curses and stuff), and misc effects (class, talent point, and passive ability) all effect the unit.
Duration effects are removed at the right times.
Distance effects are a little off because I wanted to reduce performance hits from distance checking
Misc effects are added but I need to devise a way to remove them if someone changes talent points
Effects are calculated with a multi threaded loop...so that's good I guess.

So far I have an item system, including inventory and equipment (which also includes a rudimentary UI for moving items around, splitting stacks of items, equipping through drag-n-drop or double-click, and consuming consumable items), and a status effect system.
Next up is the ability system.
Since my status effects system is already in place, I can design it from the ground up to do instant current health/mana increase/reduction, as well as add status effects to the target.
Some games scale status effects with levels...I'm not quite sure I want to open that can of worms.

You guys want to know something funny? So I was taught game dev in a silly way, basically no "Systems" approach. So I spent a month creating my own design pattern (hardly ever looked up anything during that time) that was basically just a reinvention Systems design pattern. Oh well.

I'm the anon whos making a game that allows you to play creatures with varying amounts of limbs and can therefore attack with 1-6 weapons at a time.

It's mostly just debug text. There isn't a whole lot to look at besides the item system UI at this point. I'll post something later I guess.

Yes, that's me.
I use Blender's built-in texture painting features. I usually start by painting the texture 'in 2D' (on the right), then add details directly on the model in texture paint mode (on the left), but it depends on the specific model.

Reminder to everyone:
Do not fall for the publisher trap. They are leeches who will do nothing but steal from your hard work, with some outright claiming it as their own.
In this day and age publishers are unnecessary, as everything they do can be easily done in with the internet by yourself.
Post your game on sites like 4chan, reddit, and imgur. Message youtubers and streamers about your game, and if it's ready possibly even send them a copy. One lost sale will be made up by their viewers. Word of mouth is a powerful weapon and can get your game out there easier and less hassle and more money in your pocket then with publishers. Publishers are an unnecessary evil.

I just told you there is none.
There is literally three games I've heard about made here. Spellcross and Soldier of Fortune Payback made by Cauldron, which was bought by BIS of ArmA fame, and Air Conflict:Vietnam, made by Games Farm who are still in business but they look way too fucking shady.

And it's not like I want to go work for an established studio.
You can't imagine how depressing is to be unable to find anyone to talk to about gamedev in you mother's tongue.
I have to learn everything in English and sometimes it's very frustrating.

You can find or start threads in /v/ that are closely related to your game.
For example if you're making a megaman clone, start a megaman thread and drop some gameplay webms in the thread.

Or hell, start a waifu thread and post girls from your game.

Just use your brain a little.

If you're making a furry game, it's almost a requirement to shill in /trash/. Likewise for heavily political games and /pol/.

For most games that are made in these threads, /v/ and /agdg/ are the places to shill, but in all honesty when it comes time to getting your game out there you're going to want to at the very least announce it on various subreddits like r/gamedev, annoying though they might be.

I'm making a game where there are "tiered" upgrades.

So there is like
>level 1 sword
>level 2 sword
>level 3 sword

>level 1 mace
>level 2 mace
>level 3 mace

is it worth it to make it so you can "downgrade" to the previous tiers if you want? or should I just keep it to strongest only.
>>
>>172554951
It's ok, I guess. Most important is if it fits into your game.
>>
>>172555256
Enemies can do THINGS to downgrade your gear.
>>
>>172555256
Weapons are downgradeable, but whenever you downgrade, you get some extra passive benefit, such as more XP, gold, or whatever from enemies killed with it to incentivize good players to use worse weapons to maximize their efficiency, thus making combat challenging for those players who might otherwise breeze through the game.
>>
>>172555256
Depends, do your higher tier weapons have some kind of "malus" (opposite of bonus, dunno if it's a word in English)? If yes then you should add that possibility.
>>
>>172555585
In English, the term for the opposite of bonus is usually "Penalty" but malus is a pretty cool word that we should totally have.
>>
>>172555256
What kind of bonuses are these upgrades going to have? If I'm playing an ARPG or something sometimes I'll keep a weapon that has a little less attack but has a useful bonus like increased stun % chance or gives me extra skill points in a certain skill.

>>172554951
It needs to have a slide. Besides smoothing it out a bit and adding texture it looks good I'd say.

I downloaded game maker. I have an idea for a game and want to make it. What's the next step
>>
>>172555585
The idea was that they were mostly straight upgrades. I was fooling around with the idea of giving them some kind of bonus damage (like elemental) that might be detrimental to using the higher level ones on certain enemies.

I'm also wondering if having tiers is better, or haivng sidegrades is more interesting and rewarding instead.

>Concept A
>Sword 1 - 5 damage
>Sword 2 - 7 damage
>Sword 3 - 10 damage

>Concept B
>Sword 1 - 8 damage
>Sword 2 - 8 lightning damage
>Sword 3 - 6 damage, but fires projectiles when swung

Obviously some fucking around with numbers and balance.

I'm worried players would kind of get discouraged finding stuff that's not really an upgrade.

I've been looking at a lot of games and realizing some equipment/abilities are just bad because of -when- they become available

This. The wank test is actually a great way to separate the good/decent ideas from the ones that are being driven entirely by your immediate 'desires'. This style seems like it would be easy enough to make harvest moon assets with. It also lets you use unity's 3d capabilities instead of wrangling its 2d

loli jam is an objectively terrible theme that allows you to take any kind of game and make it suitable for a jam through just putting an anime girl face icon in the corner, not to mention your "there is no porn" statement is hardly an answer to the implied question as most of the art posted in the thread on mention of loli jam comes from artists who have a background in such pornography and people feel the need to emphasize "i-it's not cp" on every step while including jumping pixel penises of all sizes in their games, not to mention googum (or at least someone using his name) is trying to push the idea of an old style jam without a page and with games tracked in the thread itself as he believes loli jam is inherently sexual and he is not alone in this belief
there is nothing about loli jam that isn't a complete trainwreck

i just wanted to make a model to replace my shitty cube weapons. i cant texture for shit but i can model low poly stuff well enough.

in the game you can almost not see the thing, making a lot of details for it would be waste of time.

You just let the space use our precious energy for free. Are you proud of yourself? Some niggers dug up all those elements with their sweat and blood so someone can make a battery for your laser pointer and first thing you do is throw that into space. You moron. You could point it at someone's solar panels and give the energy back!
