Sonic Mania is going to outsell Forces. As one who cares about the classics, I'm not easily persuaded by gullible nostalgia pull ins. Them executives can stuff it. If Sonic Forces has nothing, but gimmicks, superficially forced 2-D level design that randomly changes the perspective like an autistic fish on top of Classic Sonic being forced in, because of some poorly written time-plot that's not consistent.

I mean I liked it in Sonic Rush, so clearly it's not mechanic that's the problem, but more how Sonic Team is trying to implement it. I'd imagine it's quite taxing for the development team to make levels around the boost formula being as Sonic moves faster.

Also, I can't be the only one that's getting tired of the same exact forward structure when it comes to the level design? Seriously, it's a pity that the boost formula is degrading other qualities of the franchise.

Anon, I think you're worrying a bit too much. The series has way too many loyal fans to die. And yeah, the Boost style isn't perfect, but at least Gens & Colors did good sales & almost every Sonic fan is looking forward to Mania, so I'm confident in Forces & Mania being successes. And besides, 06 & RoL didn't kill Sonic, so I don't see anything really killing the rat in the near future. The franchise has seen better days, but overall, I think they're in a good place right now.

Is it perfect? Nah. The over reliance on nostalgia is too much, I would love to see a full 3D game & the lack of playable characters in the 3D games sucks. But all in all, I think Sonic's doing well right now.

I think with time Sonic Team can do some experimental again. Right now they're playing it safe to a degree (which I can understand if the idea is re-establishing the series again) & it'll probably be a while before they become confident to try new things again.

And I do agree that horrible mismanagement is what caused games like 06 to happen. The Sonic series has done new things & was able to make it work because they cared about the quality. One thing I'm glad SEGA seems to be doing nowadays, is that they seem willing to delay Sonic games to make sure it's not a glitchy mess when it's released, which helped Fire & Ice become a decent game when it came out, & will most likely help Mania be even better when it comes out.

BTW, it's great to have a good discussion on Sonic. Far too often in this thread it's just shitposting, & while I made the mistake of taking you for one earlier, I'm glad you actually care about the series.

I lot of the time I think about the things in the games that were lost in translation to English.
Adventure, Adventure 2, and '06 are all notorious about having bad translations.
I wonder what kind of mythos we missed out on.

The original Robotnik died. It was technically Snively that did it but Robotnik and Sonic were locked in a fist-fight to the death so it's ambiguous whether Sonic would've actually finished him off or tried to capture him alive.

The second Robotnik "died" a couple of times actually, first when his space station exploded and second when Station Square decided it would be a grand idea to nuke Robotropolis, but this was when he was a robot so he simply transferred his AI to a new robotic body (which doubled as their way of moving from the SatAM design to the Adventure design).

After Robo-Robotnik was turned into a human, nobody on the good guy side really had a chance until Sonic beat him up in #200, and after Sonic trounced his mech Robotnik proceeded to have a mental breakdown to the point where he was of no threat to anybody.

Following Robotnik's return to power and subsequent reboot into Eggman, nobody's had the chance to actually kill him off.

Simply shitty direction. Naka was more concerned with how the game felt in terms of atmosphere and story instead of gameplay, and Iizuka is incompetent and doesn't have a clue. Boost seems to be too popular now for them to deviate from it for the foreseeable future, and Sonic has ultimately devolved into being its own meme so I highly doubt we'll see the return of actual physics platforming in a 3D setting.

Oh, and if I had to compare him to a Big Two writer, it'd be Cullen Bunn. Generally mediocre to good, and fairly consistent in terms of quality. None of his stuff will be instant classics, but there's usually not a gigantic fluctuation of quality either, and when given something they're passionate about or within their comfort zone, they're really good at it (Bunn's Sinestro comes to mind here). Also a very clear understanding and love of the source material, and it's clear they do their research

But I will give credit where it's due in that what he does set up has interesting potential, and genuinely makes me interested (The troll stuff post-reboot is the perfect example of how to set up a mysterious civilization subplot. Probably because this is a double-edged sword. If arcs are planned out long in advance then it can cause individual issues to suffer, and when we're talking about a monthly comic where there's only 12 issues per year this can hurt the comic a lot. It's not like TV where if you don't like one episode you just have to wait a week for the next one. And a lot of his 4-part arcs follow a noticeable pattern where the first two issues contain a lot of exposition while most of the action is crammed in the second two. Sonic is definitely a comic that can easily do good one-issue self-contained stories.

That said, a lot of the above falls under "how much is editorial mandate."

I'd say a lot of the pacing stuff is Ian, because that's been a problem of his no matter the editor, but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if some of the other things were indeed mandated. Not a script but Shadow's line "Your shoddy craftsmanship is a disgrace to all hedgehog kind" makes me think there are more we haven't seen. So I had an idea to introduce boom silver where he's basically strongarmed/bullied by shadow to be his lackey, as he sees his psychokinesis as a powerful asset. The episode would basically be at the team saving Silver from shadow's ruthless employment and in the final fight scene, he learns to stick up for himself and beats shadow, who decides to leave him alone

>The main story can't be pontac and graff tier writing
>The other characters can't be cheerleaders, they have to play a role in the story

>Introduce Team Dark as a new team that overshadows Sonic and his friends as heroes of the town. Turns out they were mercenaries hired by Eggman. They fight but Team Dark discovers that they were paid in Eggbucks (worthless) so they go after Eggman and destroy his base. They pop up from time to time as muscle for hire for various people, sometimes working against or with Sonic and co.

I've been playing generations for the first time and I gotta say the game's level design is spot on for the modern stuff, not just branching pathways but pathways that depend on player skill, especially in the modern stages

As for what I would change when for forces is this. A less tank like controls. B less 2d in modern that feels like a crutch so they have to design less 3d platforming, and add rayman legends style check points to get the red rings
