I've not encountered much hacking, probably because the community in general is rather small. Learning curve is somewhat high, but the game is quite easily my favorite shooter ever, extremely fun and rewarding. Don't be daunted by player counts, finding games does not take long. 5x splitter is actually really, really good. It's basically a close range core. You can fire off 33 5x bursts, each of which does 80 damage at short range and 60 at long range- which also have a 1.5x crit modifier.

This gives upper bounds of 20k damage in one burst. I'd like to attach a gfycat url to this to give an example of how amazing this is, but damn that spam filter.

Oh, forgot to mention other kits. They're all pretty good, vortex amp is probably the weakest.

Grand cannon is quite good, but not too useful a lot of the time- entangled energy is okay, but I'm not sure it gives enough power to be useful- also not good against good players at all.

Free tripmines is free damage. They do about 80% of a bar. Very useful. Lots of free pilot kills for some reason too.

Oh, something I failed to mention regarding the 5x splitter- if you use it, use the shoulder laser less, its now your primary damage dealer at mid-close range. Also, check the core meter on that gfycat. Goes up to max in a single burst.

I'd recommend extra dash as a kit, ion shoulder laser is useful for peeking, double dash helps a ton with that.
