The Ruined King wanted to resurrect his wife, but the monks told him no. He killed them and did so anyway, but predictably, his wife was a gross corpse. The King then did another ritual which bound their spirits together, but because of all the artifacts on the island, the spell became supercharged, and fucked everything up.

So actually, it wasn't the resurection that fucked the isles, but that binding ritual. Morde's skull was one of the artifacts there, so it might have helped charge the spell.
