I'd put it somewhere between 6.5~7/10.
I found the combat smooth and enjoyable, though certain areas were just abominable with the camera and enemy clutter. However, link-striking, dodging and rolling, blindsiding in general, warp strikes, and ally techniques are all very smooth, as is weapon switching on the fly.
The story ultimately works, though it's a sloppy mess, undeveloped characters and rushed to the limit. I wasn't left with any major questions, though, which is good for closure.

But, it's complex. It has deep, abiding flaws, but it's personal interpretation as to how far those drag it down. Though the experience suffered from this ambivalence, I feel it was a pleasant more often than not.

Firion is based on his killers; if his killers don't apply (aquatic enemies, undead enemies, stone enemies, machine enemies) then he's garbage. Plus he's only got 100% human killer which isn't the best.
Furthermore Firion has no elemental synergies to speak of, whereas DK Cecil's calamitous -100% dark imperil makes him a godmaker for Veritas of the Dark.. and himself for every round after the first.

In his limelight DK Cecil is a far more damaging chain finisher than Firion, but admittedly Firion is easier to utilize.

With his enhancement buffing Hero's Rime, he covers two of the most necessary party roles in one unit.
Enhanced Hero's Rime gives: +100% to ATK, DEF, MAG, and SPR (colossal), ~1000 +8x modifier regen per round (pretty convenient), and 20 +0.25x modifier MP regen per round (massively fucking important).
MP engines become more and more required in JP content as battles get longer and more draining on the party. Orlandeau, famous as he may be, doesn't have a lot of MP and is burning 45 every round. Tilith devours huge numbers to run her incredible healing/reviving network. Things like that start adding up and it reaches a point where spending a turn to toss ethers and elixirs starts becoming a lethal drawback.
Ramza's SPR is not hard to scale to the point that he's erupting with 3500 HP and 150 MP every single turn, on top of one of the best statistical buffs available for months and months (to the point that it's still an incredible buff in JP, and the one who's buff is a tiny shred higher [110%], Roy, is rated right on the same 98 on the Altema list).
He's not "necessary" but he brings so very much that he's deserving of the top tier rank.

You "can" build Tilith to the point that she refreshes enough of her own MP that she can take on MP engine duties, but that's a little risky (as it means she's not going to heal on her MP beat turns) and with Ramza you don't have to worry about that. He lets you leave Tilith on hyper-healing round-the-clock.
