Frostbite is a fantastic engine if you know what you're doing with it, look at the animation, graphics, and performance of Battlefield 1 and Battlefront. While Battlefront especially is rather bad gameplay wise they excelled in these aspects more than a majority of vidya out there.
Bioware doesn't really know what they're doing with Frostbite and it shows.

When they wake up, they are too weak to accompany you in combat, so they stay on the Tempest like any other NPC.

The Archon probably realizes Ryder can access to the Remnants' technology thanks to SAM, finds out he/she has a twin and go take the implants from them to gain the same access. That's why Sara says "He has got access" in the launch trailer.

What do you think about not being able to change the rest of the crew's guns or armor? Like not being able to call down skills is a bigger deal and even in ME 2 and 3 I'd just "give them a gun that makes sense for the character" and then just leave it. I don't mind the weapon thing, because it always felt like the squadmates did jack shit, anyway, even if I would've liked giving Cora different shotguns, Vetra different assault rifles, etc.
The thing that bugs me the most is the lack of alternate outfits. It just seems lazy to me, especially when, as fuckin' barebones as ME2 is, it at least gave you loyalty outfits, even they were just re-clouring or re-texturing works.

Giving Cora a re-painted outfit that looks more like the one in the artbook would've been awesome, or even giving her an asari commando suit (updated to modern levels), or a similar armour to that of the asari Pathfinder.

There's really no reason to not be able to equip them differently at least where weapons are concerned.
