This game is just less linear and less dependent on dungeons. I really appreciate how a a decent number of the sidequests are people sending you off on tasks they think are impossible so you'll stop bothering them.

Is it wrong of me to love the lore and world of these games because they feel like they don't take themselves that seriously? It feels like the developers just put whatever they want into the game and it has an overly positive effect and charm. There are rock people, fish aliens (the OoT Zora made me think they were aliens), bird people, Amazons, and so forth. The original Zelda was about exploring to find the dungeons and the dungeon items within to go to other dungeons. The ability to explore anywhere in the overworld was just a nuance of having a large overworld, not some divine feature. There was also a sense of gated progress and linearity which was preserved for every Zelda before Breath. You need to do a dungeon to get the raft to visit another dungeon. A dungeon to get the ladder so you could complete more dungeons. A dungeon for the bow and boomerang so you could defeat enemies in rooms you couldn't access via sword or to kill ganon. That sense of exploration wasn't preserved for BotW; they just made it open and gave you everything you'll need in the first 45 minutes on the great plateau and you can do anything and go anywhere after those 45 minutes. Theres no progress gating saying you can't do one divine beast over another. You certainly couldn't go face ganon right after getting your sword in LoZ1. I feel like way too many people have confused LoZ1's sense of exploration with being totally open-world when there really truly was the linearity and progress gating seen in every other Zelda game. That, or way too many people never even completed Zelda 1 and spent the majority of their time on the overworld mistaking that for the entire game.

And i was talking about game design philosophy being translated, not "literally code from a 30 year old videogame" or whatever you're talking about. Philosophy like what i just mentioned in the above paragraph.

I don't feel like being abled to go try to face ganon from the getgo is some super duper neat or benefical thing and could have easily benefited the game more woth dungeons and special treasures n shit. Like imagine being one of those people who managed to beat ganon in the first 6 hours and how trivial playing whatever rest of the game would feel like having skipped over 20 hours worth of orb and seed and rupee collectathon.

It's a dumbass thing on /v/ to hate games for being linear when a good deal of the time, linearity helps a game's level design and challenge.

The original game has neat ideas but it's too held back by the limitations of the NES. The level and world design is garbage and plain as shit even for it's time. The NES was simply better for sidescrolling platformers or action games. You can skip around a little to grab one item early in the original Zelda, big fucking whoop. It doesn't change the fact that every screen in the game is the same rectangle with a slightly differentlayout. Even the secrets are barebones as shit. Oh boy, a money making game every once in a while.

The original Zelda is far from a bad game but it's not some super impressive world to explore with no handholding like people think. The game came with small guide and map and it's level design doesn't make non-linearity anything impressive.

As much as I don't want to sound like the hipsters on regular /v/ who praise Zelda II just to be contrary, Zelda II is a genuinely awesome game that holds up far better today in terms of challenge, level design, enemy variety, etc.

That being said I'm about ready to start Zelda 1's second quest because completing that and the handheld games( except ALBW) are the only ones I haven't played. Pretty excited for MC and ST.

This game is more complete than any game I've played in a long fucking time. I never expected nintendo to be the one to do anything like this. It has nuances that they don't even bother putting in the effort to do in most other games. It has depth of gameplay and interactions that surprise you that they actually had it in the game. The kind of thing where you'd never expect to be able to use the dynamic weather to your advantage in a fight for example. Good luck ever seeing that in a bethesda open world game for example. Where other open world games are still just 3 or 4 branches of options, this lets you explore and connect lines yourself. It doesn't have as many things that are just overlooked by lazy developers.

I have this problem where I act retarded and exaggerate shit when I vent a little. I don't have a problem if the first game is other people's favorite, I just think that the same people who I know played other games in the series and then all of a sudden started shitting on them because they make you do dungeons in a certain order are jackasses.

Most of the people who played Zelda 1 did those dungeons all in numerical order because they either used a guide or called the Nintendo Help Hotline (or whatever it was called), let's be honest. I'm not shitting on them because the game was made with the idea of players sharing secrets and helping eachother, but that's how it was.

Even my big brothers who I watched beat the game without guides did the dungeons in numerical order.

Now I'm not saying that invalidates the fact that you can do things a little out of order, or fuck around like get the blue ring and white sword early as shit which is fun and cool, but I really doubt a lot of the people playing the game even thought about going to get the raft early to grab a heart or beat another dungeon first and then go back.

TL;DR I like Zelda 1, but it's like Metal Gear 1. Good games that were incredibly outshone by their sequels due to new ideas and new technology allowing them to create games with more interesting, challenging level design and variety.

even skyward sword had a fun instrument and it only ever mattered to play it at key plot moments.
