A mapping function takes in a value to be mapped, the minimum input in the acceptable range, the maximum input in that range, the minimum output, and the maximum output.
The mapping function returns an output value mapped within the output range.

consider:

function map(value, valRangeMin, valRangeMax, mapRangeMin, mapRangeMax) {

if( value <= valRangeMin) return mapRangeMin;
if( value >= valRangeMax) return mapRangeMax;

valRangeDiff = valRangeMax - valRangeMin;
mapRangeDiff = mapRangeMax - mapRangeMin;

valNorm = (value - valRangeMin) / valRangeDiff; // normalize the value
mappedValue = valNorm * mapRangeDiff + mapRangeMin;

return mappedValue;
}

WARNING: Untested code.

bool (a) equals 3 for you? Doubtful.

Or, if you got the values backwards, DWORD (b) equals 3 for you, indicating the system error code ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND. There's literally nothing in the code using a path.

Either you fucked up printing, or that's not a serious answer. A breakpoint would let you view the values of the variables in the scope - as is.

before the red and yellow had low contrast together and was hard to see

I've never posted on /agdg/ before so be gentle with your shitposts. Is Game Maker alright for making a turn based 2d game?

I'd just like to fiddle with the actual engine before I start making anything, then there's also the fact that I have to put everything on paper before I even consider anything else.

Game would be like a risk map, where you move your party and interact with objects on it. With story events like an RPG/visual novel and with battles being turn based.

I'm asking about Game Maker because it's supposedly the simplest and this would be the first project. I don't know any programming languages so I'd have to learn the basics along the way. Or is Unity the way to go?

I think I'm going to record some demos this time around. I'm starting to think I don't actually want to design games. Out of the games I've made the part I liked the most was the end where I was just playing it and tweaking shit/fixing bugs. But they've only been small shit games.

This question is directed at anyone in the industry/working in a small team that have made games before, or anyone that knows about the industry.

So, QA testers are a thing, but every time I've heard about people "getting into the industry" its been through QA testing as a stepping stone. Is career QA testing a thing? I want to WORK ON games, I like WORKING ON games, I don't like MAKING games and I'm starting to learn that those are very different things and I don't actually want to be a 1MA indie dev.

Is there a job in the industry that's like a specialist QA tester/ debugger/ handyman?
>>
>>170415282
>Is career QA testing a thing?
Yes, I have a friend that does it. But their job is more coordinating with offshore Pajeet QA teams, so if you're white you might be at a disadvantage if you want to just be a tester rather than some kind of testing management liason.

>>170415282
QA testing is a thing and you can make a career out of it. Most of the QA guys I've worked with were on short term contracts near the end of a project but there was always a few guys with a lot of experience who were fulltime. If you want to shoot for a more specialized version then learn to be an SDET. This all said if you have the right skills then programmers and environment artists are probably the most in demand in the industry right now.

int[] imageSpeedsByImageIndex = new int[]{.3, .22, 2, .08, .07, .5};

image_speed = imageSpeedsByIndex[image_index]

IMO you should create an ImageFrameData class, which holds information like speed for a specific frame, but also color tint (like to flash reddish when getting hit), or like multi-hit combos where you can combo if you attack again on a certain frame. I'd save that as a json file next to the sprite sheet, but thats probably too advanced for you right now, no offense

Very first fundamentals you should the very basics of programming of whatever language if else statements, variables, loops, arrays, expressions etc

After that you should read an algorithms book to learn how to solve problems and how think to solve problems

I recommend the best algorithms solving book out there

Introduction to Algorithms by T Cormen

then you should be good to go to build whatever you want in programming

Absolutely agree. I have probably learned more in the months that I've been doing this alone, than I'll learn in years at that school.
However, education is free here, and I get grants and loans for living (no interest rate so long as I continue to study, and afterwards it will remain very low), and access to relatively cheap student housing, so I haven't got much to lose by doing it.

Thanks, Anon...!

It's actually you guys who made me decide to go all in for this dream. One anonymous guy sent me a 3D printed AGDG logo when I lived and toiled in Japan (internship at big Jap company, working 10 hours a day as a desk monkey). It came with a note that said "dreams never die", and I realized that I'd rather die than live my life the way I was doing, so I might as well risk it all on my dream.
If everything fails I'll just end up working a dumb retail job in my own country, and still suffer less than in Japan (for better pay).

Basically, COPPA says that you cannot track certain things if the players are under 13 or so.
If you are using it for a demo no one will care, I think it only matters if you release a game and it ends up being huge.

Even if life goes well, I feel pretty dead inside lately. I wish I wouldn't feel so old. I wish I would be with full of hopes and dreams again like many years ago. I wish I would feel that driving passion again, to make the world a better and nicer place. You know what I'm saying? Even if I never make something big or memorable, I wish I would feel alive again. Since you asked...

UNTITLED CABAL SHOOTER

Neat concept. Could be alot of fun with some graphics, punchier effects, and of course, satisfying audio for weapons and combat.

The only major thing wrong I noticed was that I was able to use the keyboard to start the game, but as soon as I was in-game, I was unable to move. Upon restarting and investigating the controls, I found that it was defaulting me to a gamepad, even though I don't have one plugged in.

Hope to see this game grow, anon!

Just submitted demo!
https://itch.io/jam/agdg-demo-day-13/rate/125445

It is a very short experience meant to be accessible to less hardcore danmaku players so I hope it is fun and enjoyable! Don't worry, for everyone who prefers hard shmups the harder difficulty that will be implemented later should bring it in line with what you have come to expect from your usual games of the genre.

If you could let me know what kind of score you end up with the first time you play and how many coins you get in that first run that would help a lot with balancing things (even if you lose because just playing the game shouldn't leave you with a progression roadblock)

Most of the assets still aren't finished so it will be rough, but Demo Day has never been about polished experiences so I am completely okay with what I turned out today.

Thank you for playing and hopefully it isn't a complete disappointment!

some feedback:
-current level is boring so add more interesting lanes or work more on level layout, you can also add some verticality(mountains, hills, depressions) so you can add fun shapes like spheres, labirinths, buildings, etc
-change camera to something less annoying(see any strategic game ever where camera moves when pointer is near screen's border)
-upgrade system:i had no idea it was a thing until boss destroyed me but it's boring(every soldier can learn the same abilities)and broken(everything level up too much especially range and attack cooldown)
-no strategic reason to build anything but cannoneer (see upgrade system and point below)
-if you can survive the first 4 waves, you can spam plain/base cannoneer all day and die of boredom because is just too efficient
-too much money in an already broken upgrade system(fast robots, screamers)
-the boss:out of nowhere 65k boss without a warning/different pic from a normal screamer?the first time around i had no idea it was a boss until too late second time i just upgraded 3 cannoneer at lvl 11(ONE per lane)and boss went down in less than 2 seconds not fun at all,to solve this give it less hp,show player a warning like (X waves until boss fight) with more interesting moves like teleport to another lane or avoid attacks/slows with random chance)
-if you really want to use floats(what the fuck) for stats atleast don't show it to the player when hitting mobs or upgrading soldiers
-demo has no sfx,bgm,voices
-zoom has no limit...

i know you rushed this one guys but damn.
anyway keep working on it you can make this very fun!

Demo up for Ctesiphon: https://itch.io/jam/agdg-demo-day-13/rate/96205

For all those (on Windows) who can't get it running with Java, try the new exe

A lot of cool new stuff this time around, like a melee weapon and a rocket launcher.

The pathfinding is currently broken on the enemies so they just stand in place, once I've got that fix I'm going to put together a proper level instead of this disjointed one we've had for months and months

No problem

Next up - REWOUND

While I only played up until after the first real battle, I enjoyed this demo! The atmosphere is really nice, the art's not too bad, and the combat is interesting.

I noticed a few things during my playtime, though.

Firstly, the music is nice, but you should maybe pick up some better soundfonts or samples for the future. As it stands, the music is a bit loud, and without much processing, the MIDI-esque instruments are a bit harsh on the ears. There's a host of free soundfonts out there to use.

One nitpick I had was that the loss of control during cutscenes was weird, since it felt more like my movement keys had gotten stuck down rather than I had entered a cutscene. Have you considered adding the "cinematic widescreen" effect for when you're in cutscenes? Some people don't like it, but I find it helps to establish when the player doesn't have control.

In the screen right before the North Cave entrance, I punched one of those mouse-things into the side of the mountain, not sure if intentional. I also really don't understand the point of the smaller creatures, since you can just beat them away effortlessly.

Finally, I don't really understand the strategy to combat, besides "dump attacks and then get far away so the enemy wastes their precious time". What's the best way to fight? Have you considered putting a limit on how low turn times can go? With the boss, when I was about to die, and when he was about to die, our turns became pointless, as he couldn't even land one attack if I stood next to him. Seems like at that point the battle should just end.

Great game overall!
>>
>>170436224
i like the simple visuals and the music would be better with human enemies tho
or just make it a small deathmatch style game

that event in the bathroom disappears when you walk out and back in

the lack of a map makes the first 10-15 minutes frustrating

i was standing next to the second key you get after receiving the fire axe and it said nothing of interest until i stood infront of it ?

the only zombies i encountered were after i had a weapon to defend myself which seems magical and that one guy who disappeared and killed the light so i guess the mc is insane

the zombies didnt seem to pose any threat so i left them alone

though they managed to run after me

you might want to give them an inescapable grab or something

the whole put the lighter on the gas and put the note on the gas while running around lost in a seemingly large hallway before anything interesting happens is really off putting

you should make interactable objects more obvious (the medkits are fine cause its a bonus) but key quest items like that note on the desk that magically reveals itself i missed completely

also that sequence in the bathroom makes no sense, why does the other door lock when the guy shits himself? maybe you could intrigue the player to investigate rather than force them to

that buzzing sound from the xray is coming from the wrong direction

doors could be more descriptive when you try to open them , or atleast make the sign shine or something so you know to read it

give the player the ability to read old notes ive read before

i stopped playing when the guy shut off the light and went through a wormhole
all the enemies are the exact same ( i know its still early but maybe give them different colored gowns

idk you could add some mechanics stuff it feels really clunky

inventory system is neat
wasnt expecting the 8 directional character animation so thats nice
the aiming thing was interesting though i never got upto the point where i had to use it
>>

one is the raw component that uses a simple version of unity's physics and collision detection, and is easy to use
the other (3rd/first person character prefab) is a shitty pile of scripts designed to wow kids into think they're going to make CoD, or for real devs to use for five minutes until they can make a real controller.
When tutorials tell you to use a character controller, they're almost certainly talking about the component and not the first/third person prefab (unless they explicitly say)

>>
>>170436693

>>
>>170437147
Filed, thanks anon.

The key items do twinkle periodically to indicate they are worth investigating, but another playtester didn't notice the twinkling either, so it needs to be more frequent or reworked entirely.

Combat will be much deeper in the future; the inventory system and item interactions took so much of my time that combat wound up being a thin experience in this demo.

Thanks for playing, and for your feedback! I'll be collecting everyone's reviews over the next couple days and using their experiences to shape the game in the future.

If you mean with the keyboard then you might be experiencing ghosting issues. It is a problem with the way keyboards are built. You might have to reassign some keys to get it to work (unless you know about ghosting already, in which case I need to look into it. I know for sure you can move and shoot while using gamepad)

Yeah, with the keyboard. Let me clarify, I just mean that shooting stops whenever I move, not that the key doesn't register.

Now I have some weird keybind issue going on - I changed movement to wasd and shooting to the numpad, but I can only move right, up, and diagonally down left. A does nothing, and S pressed alone moves diagonally.

I'll give it a shot with a gamepad later. I'm enjoying the game. I'm pretty bad at danmaku though, I keep dying on or just after the first boss, but I'm getting farther each time so it's not boring.

The tileset is much newer and more closely based on tutorials and such than the other assets. The original tileset I made around the same time as the sprites is still in the game actually, used in the DD9 level since I didn't want to waste time modifying it to suit the new set.

I'll probably do some touching up of the sprites eventually as well, but right now I'm still not sure if the MC's moveset is even final.

Some feedback on Ghost Knight Victis.

-Liking the designs of both the player character and enemy, got some nice New Londo vibes going on.

-Not certain if this is part of your design or just for the sake of testing, but I really like that weapons are mapped to separate buttons rather than having to switch between them like you do in Souls games. Being able to switch weapons mid-combo makes the combat feel more engaging.

-I also like that charge attack with the Rapier. Very cool.

-That said, I feel like the recovery phases on your attack and dodge animations are a bit too lengthy. Makes the combat feel a little clunkier than it should.

-Took me a while to figure out how that stamina bar works. Not used to seeing one that adds rather than subtracts.

Overall, I really like this game. Looking forward to seeing it progress.

Hi Ghost Knight Victis dev here. Thanks for the feedback anon.

>weapons are mapped to separate buttons

This is intentional. Once I add the third weapon, plus some few ideas that I'll implement later on, I'm hoping combat will become more interesting. Although I equally need to make enemy AI competent for the whole game to be enjoyable.

>I feel like the recovery phases on your attack and dodge animations are a bit too lengthy

It was actually faster and more responsive before, which made the whole thing too easy in that the enemies could never land a hit on you.

I increased the recovery on the spear, because the spear really is supposed to be slow, but maybe I went too far. I'll look for some more opinions on this and try to find a sweet spot.

Effectively, the rapier is your light attack, then the spear and warhammer (3rd weapon that isn't there yet) are your heavy attacks.

>Took me a while to figure out how that stamina bar works. Not used to seeing one that adds rather than subtracts.

I was supposed to make your character heat up visibly as the bar goes higher. It's representing the excess heat and overexertion in your armor, but I haven't taken the time to do that yet.

I probably should just make the HUD bar a standard stamina bar that goes downwards instead.

Thanks again!

Ctesiphon

-Gunplay feels good. Movement is quick and responsive, the recoil on the guns makes them feel punchy. Alt-fire is always great. Its already fun to just move around the map and shoot things.

-Awesome music.

-Sound effects are kind of all over the place. The player character's voice effects are good. The shotgun's reload and shell drop effects are great, nice and crisp. But I can barely hear any of the weapons actually firing. Takes away from the solid gunplay.

-Like the theme. Like the idea of a fast-paced cyberpunk FPS.

-Kind of hard to talk about your enemies since they can't move at the moment. I like their 'CRT with legs' design though.

Overall, this seems to be shaping up very well. Look forward to seeing this get fleshed out even more.

Monolith dev, if you're around:

Really enjoyed this thing.

Intro screen, pause screen, highscores screen, they're all really great.

I was disappointed with the sounds, tho. They're all good, but sound effects like shooting or losing health aren't that satisfactory, to be honest.

Level layouts are interesting, and the fact that different bosses keep coming up, even on replays is fun.

Is starts out kinda confusing, with the whole bullet hell feel, but I think it's easy to get accustomed to.

Weapon variety is siiiiccckkkkk. But I didn't find out how you can switch weapons while playing, or if that's even possible at all.

Obviously didn't make it to the ending, if there even is one.

-Love the character design. Love the overall game feel, a nice mix of cutesy and action.

-KBM controls are pretty good overall, though it takes a bit of getting used to the gamepad setup. Kind of wish you had a pure twin-stick control scheme for gamepads. Turning could be a bit faster across the board.

-Wish there were a dodge mechanic.

-The knockback on that scattergun is nuts, pushed me to my death a few times. Not a bad thing, but could be a tinge less intense.

-Shooting feels good though, despite my wrangling with the controls. Good sound effects, good feedback. Its fun to shoot those baddies.

Overall, I like it. Want to see what it plays like with more enemies on screen at once. Good stuff!

You are getting really good at level design, and difficult balancing. I enjoy playing this a lot.
I have can't kill the weasels if they fall or jump on those thin wood-like platforms connected to rocks, not sure if a bug or not.
New camera works great, but I think it shouldn't move down when you are pressing down+attack.
Ignore the shitter Grumpy-chan is cute, but I agree on the fact you have improved on your art so upgrading her sprites would be really nice.

Love the art on this. Bullets aren't easy to see sometimes.
I believe having a tutorial stage to learn the range and timing of the girls attacks would be really useful.
A way to get HP back could be interesting too.

Sorry for the lateness of Metanoia's entry for all two people who might be looking forward to it. Ink decided to wipe one of the CYOA-segments in the demo so I'm having to quickly retype it.

That and it was refusing to process tags which has been stalling my submission since last night. Still don't know what's causing that but I can at least force it to work reliably now.

Hopefully, you'll be able to play the new demo within the next few hours.

Not having ragdolls is fine most of the time, plenty of games use canned death animations. Ragdolls are really only useful in "realistic" games.

>feel free to complain and nitpick
don't worry i am on the case
+i like your bgm
+standard gun is nice and best weapon in the game but his sfx need more strenght
+Shotgun feels great,i like its sfx and effects but that's a shame has way too much recoil when charged beforehand(huge recoil in lethal bordless level was it intentional?) and this forced me to not use it or even pick it up
+ice gun:i love snowflakes particles, not so much it's sfx(was that taken from a vacuum cleaner?)freezing duration is way too low against the huge chainsaw mob (beating that guy is super frustrating reasons below)
-movements feels way too inaccurate for the type of gameplay i think you want??(fast and agile or atleast that's what you comunicate when mobs are faster than you),too many times i fell into space because i tried to avoid mobs without success
-no invincibility frame on hit(i died in 1 shot after being charged into a wall) and this means enemy can perma-push you into the void (very frustrating and feels very unfair)
-tutorials need to disappear after the first time because they get in the way when fighting the small red guys (fighting them in large spaces is better so i backtracked a little)
-fix mob's collision with walls and obstacles because they can go through them sometimes
-chests hurts you if you shoot it from short distance(intentional???)
-walls don't disappear when you go near them this is a huge problem especially if you place mobs BEHIND IT so you never see them charging/exploding in your face
-boss:charged into the wall the same second the room opened this means i just stood there hitting it with my guns for 5 minutes straight doing no damage (i guess i will never see the boss die from those huge invulnerable flaming pots)

i dont think this is a good level for a new player, way too many things can go wrong and kill you,new enemies are introduced too fast one room after another, overall a more frustrating experience than a fun one

>Umbrella warriors
Great game in every aspect, as I always say. Loving the new sections of the level.
Is the lack of diagonal shooting intentional? I realized that bothers me a little because of the inevitable inconcious comparission with Contra.

>MoGiSho
Not much t say about this one, really nice and fun to play.
Character hitbox should be more clear.
I had some framerate issues with it on my laptop though, is extrange because I never had them with any other bullet hell game I have played.

>ProjectRocket
Well, this is ridiculously fun. I fell I'll be playing this a lot.
I'm not sure if graphics are placeholder or not, but I think a different arte style would sit the game really well.
One of my new agdg favorites.

>Untitled Cabal Shooter
Really interesting mechanics, take some time to get used to, but I really want too see more of it.
Needs some invincibility frames when you get hit

I'll play more games and leave feedback for them later.

your bad points are really good (as in, they're very helpful)

the player has iframes but I think they're 1. too short and 2. doesn't give you noclip so there's zero escape from situations like being cornered

I'm guessing they either meant "emergent gameplay" (giving players interacting parts that end up creating something even the devs couldn't foresee)

or

Give players enough options on how to handle a given task, that they feel personally responsible, rather than being ramrodded into what the devs wanted.

you don't have to charge it very long, and it charges quicker the more it levels up (this was downplayed in the demo though)

Pixel platformer dev here, thanks for your time.

>You are getting really good at level design, and difficult balancing.
It was actually the first level I tried sketching out a bit before diving in the editor, I'm glad you like it. Some parts were still rushed though, especially the last segment.

>can't kill the weasels if they fall or jump on those thin wood-like platforms connected to rocks
Need some specification on this.

>New camera works great, but I think it shouldn't move down when you are pressing down+attack.
Yeah that was why I originally removed it actually, forgot to address that in this demo.

>No issues with vsync enabled at all.
Good to hear, although I think it only affected a select few systems to begin with. Namely monitors that had a refresh rate close to, but not exactly 60Hz.

I really don't, I just don't want my character flying around and falling off levels everytime I want to shoot something, that's just going to end up with me not using that gun. And pretending that's some kind of neat dodge mechanic is nonsensical

Hemoglobin Project

There needs to be where you can use the arrow keys or holding down mouse button to move instead also because playing wsad and having to examine or use weapon doesn't feel good for the player

The zombie's charge attack is way too fast they move at such a ridiculous speed. Either give the player a sprint option with a stamina bar or decrease the zombie speed

It would be more interesting to have zombie bats that attack you when you into a room or a zombie dog that bursts through the window to chase you

The smoke in the morgue room doesn't look that good

Otherwise pretty good game

I'd rate it 7.5/10

For the combat system maybe have it where if you push a certain button within a time frame with a meter bar you can dodge an attack or have a chance to do critical damage etc

- In general you need to use less keys and think about what a player will intuitively try to do to examine, close dialogues, leave menus, open doors.

- Examining (E) should also close dialogue when you're done with something instead of having to press J.

- Literally none of these cabinets have anything in them, you shouldn't have bothered making any of them examinable.

- You should have an indicator (maybe brackets that pop up when you're near) over objects that can be fruitfully examined.

- There's a lot of pointlessly empty space that doesn't add to the atmosphere.

- You should just be able to automatically use keys and open doors if you have them. Going into inventory, using a key, then having to open the door after closing the dialogue about not needing the key anymore is pointless.

- You can't use the inventory very intuitively. When you've chosen an item and are in the menu to use or discard it, pressing tab doesn't let you escape the entire menu. You must first press K (cancel). However, pressing K doesn't let you leave the inventory either. Let tab escape the entire inventory menu regardless of where you are in it, and let K let you escape the inventory as well when you're not within a sub-menu. Pressing K multiple times to escape out of sub-menus and then the entire inventory should be natural.

- I would debate renaming "aim" to "ready weapon" or something, because you can only attack in the direction you were facing when you began to "aim". It's not very intuitive.

- I got used to the slow attack system and I assume you were going for combat that's not very fun. If you want your combat to be more fun, skip having aim+attack and just allow the player a one-button attack.

- It won't be as big a deal if the map has less useless space in it, but by default I think most players assume there should be a way to run. I would consider putting in running.

- I love 2D pixelshit horror and grid-based inventory systems. You pretty much nail the look and atmosphere. It's a little cliche but I'm fine with that.

- The grid-based inventory system reminds me of NEO Scavenger, so I kind of assumed your game would have more "survival" aspects (inventory management, food/water, tool crafting) ...I get this is a demo, or that maybe that's not your intention at all, so just letting you know what my expectation was looking at the screenshots and hearing the term "survival". Grid-based inventory heavily suggests an emphasis on inventory management.

Thanks for the feedback anon; It's been saved with the other comments to check out after Demo Day is over with.

Alot of people seem to agree that the controls for menus are pretty unintuitive, so that'll need an overhaul.

The brackets for examinable items isn't a bad idea, ala Clock Tower?

As far as empty space/empty cabinets goes, alot of that is just due to the time constraints of the demo. The hospital is missing about half the rooms it was supposed to have, including a cafeteria, patient rooms, and a maintenance room, all of which I didn't have time to implement, so missing space should be fixed then.

As far as you not liking the combat, sorry to hear that. I doubt I'll be changing to it a "run around and mash the attack key" system, as that would pretty much trash the entire pacing of the game. I'm not sure what good survival horror games had gameplay that was run and gun.

Taking forever but can finally spawn turrets on capital ships. These are independently controlled by other players, so a capital ship would have a pilot and then a couple of gunners. You get in/out of them and switch seats like tanks in Battlefield, but I haven't written that part yet so they just aim at nothing for now.

Yeah, brackets like Clock Tower are pretty standard for this genre and will fit in with the aesthetic. Just have them pop up when you're near something and pressing E when they're up should examine the object.

Yeah I figured you were going for the classic "player character feels slow and bad at fighting to make it spoopier" thing, so I only brought it up on the off chance that wasn't what you were going for.

I'm not necessarily suggesting run and gun as an alternative, but I question the need for there to be two button presses to attack. I was fine with the axe taking a long time to follow through, I just got annoyed that "aim" doesn't really do anything but allow you to attack.

Hm, I guess the aim key is a no-brainer for me. 99% of games I've played involve an aim button. I can't imagine how difficult most shooters would be if you had to always guess where your shots would land by having to just fire from the hip without aiming a weapon first. I guess I just don't agree with this point.

I like your other ideas though. I'm not sure if I'll do the brackets specifically, but I do need to figure out another way to make interactable items more obvious.

>>
>>170458441
Not that anon but you could have the traditional "sparkle/shine" that periodically pops up on items in things like RPG Maker games. What you could do is only make that shine happen when you are within x distance of the object. It could be like "using your trained eye and instincts from years of x you can spot objects/items that seem to be of some importance"
>>

in the context of Magic: the Gathering, it was giving players to pick the cards that make a theme they feel like is their own, with art choices, mechanics, colors, etc.

For video games, getting to customize your player character or choose from a selection, customizing your party with different members, and base-building/McGuffin hunting in your own chosen order would be relevant. Stage Select in Mega Mans was a big part of its early success, as was choosing when to use special powers if at all..

The dead guy behind the desk with fireaxe in his back doesn't really look like a dead guy sitting behind the desk with a fireaxe in his back, but I still checked him out simply because he looked different than everything else.

This is a prevalent problem in modern games. They highlight and frame up everything you can interact with and people completely stop paying attention to the environment and only look for the shiny shit.

>show her some videos of games featuring my music
>"oh wait I played this one"
>"what, you only play candy crush"
Turns out after we broke up, she finished Braid, which I told her to play. (also I teased her a lot for being stuck in some puzzles)
Then when jon blow released the witness, she got it too, and too beat it. And then she started playing random indie games that steam recommended. And somehow played one I've made tunes for.
>"So you're really into indie games now huh? Want to try the one I'm making?"
>"Oh you're making a game?!"
And now she's some sort of official playtester I guess.

>If you had multiple solutions to opening doors, highlighting keys wouldn't be necessary

It's still not necessary.
You are locked in a hospital wing with eight doors in it, not a whole country, ffs.
You have instant access to three rooms (discounting the one you wake up in and one of the doors is downright inaccessible), each contains an important object and two of them even have written clues about what to do with those objects.
You find a lighter, a piece of paper and a bunsen burner. Notes specifically talk about the paper being a note with combination for a lock written in invisible ink and room with burner has a note shouting about the burner being functional.
>Lighter
>Note
>Burner
SOMEONE CALL BATMAN THIS IS TOO HARD!

The room you unlock with the code from the note has a key. The locked doors are down to three. The Chapel. The Morgue and Exit. EW isn't locked, it's barricaded, you will need something to break in.
You get in the Morgue. There is Axe and some ammo. You take the Axe to the EW door to break the planks. EW has a key and note. Note literally says it's a key to the Chapel. You get into the Chapel. There is a note a gun and a key to the Exit.
What in the world is there to even figure out?

I think the only hint that might be needed is the idea of invisible ink needing to be heated up but I found this puzzle so obvious considering there was fucking nothing else in the game that it's a moot point.

I'm also not really sure why a lighter is needed to light a bunsen burner when you could just directly combine the lighter and the note but it's not a big deal.
>>
>>170462701
No need to sperg out because developers have learned techniques over the years that minimize the amount of players who end up running around the map aimlessly for half an hour looking for some thingum. Sure the demo is small in scope, but the completed product is probably gonna be bigger, and it would be stupid not to take this opportunity to learn what does and doesn't constitute good object highlighting.
>>

I can't play your game. It exits immediately when I open.

You are a gentleman and a scholar

I assume you're vine or someone else from discord posting on his behalf. Why not change demo day to "first friday/saturday every two months" instead of having it on the eighth, leading to these situations?
I mean, it works for ludum.

60KB of storyfilescripting later, Metanoia's more or less ready to build now. Gods have mercy on my text/adventure game and I hope y'all enjoy what's available so far.

Be realistic with any new software you have to install a bunch of updates at first then every once in awhile they have updates etc

>>170465629
He doesn't even post here, don't bother with feedback.

I've replied to him with advice, so I know that he definitely posts here occasionally.

Resident evil dev,
I got a crash when I walked into another room but I can't reproduce it and I unfortunately didn't save the error message. Just thought you might want to know. I tried to reproduce another anons inventory bug but couldn't. So far your game seems like the best though.

Use trilinear filtering?
>>
>>170465773
back when DD2 was being planned the thread had an argument about the date and I think the consensus was to just always start on the 8th since thats when the first DD was posted

if there's enough demand i can easily change it but im afraid people might be used to the "tradition" by now, its been on the 8th for 2 years now

Sorry, i just stopped whatever game i played when i started to feel like it wasn't really challenging, it was just bothersome. There is a fine line between the player having to re-do something out of their own fault and when it's the game's fault.
Especially when the checkpoints are sparse enough that you have to go through some stuff just to get to the part where you're stuck.
>>
>>170465934
It's worth it in order to come across as nice and laid back.
>>
>>170465965
Thanks anon. It's driving me nuts - That makes 4 people now trying to reproduce this stupid inventory bug and I cannot figure out what the deal is. Frustrating!

Should I recognize this? I spend way too much time here and I still have no clue which game this is meant to be.

>>170466393
yeah fug it ill do it
>>
>>170466289
Well first build an inventory system, and then insert a bug that crashes the game, but forget where it is, so you can't fix it.

Then make a bunch of unpopular decisions regarding placement of keys and general gameplay
>>
>>170466001
No need to be sorry. Stopping playing is feedback too, and every type of feedback is good feedback, so in some way, I'm actually thankful for that!

So, if you want to help me more, just tell me - if that diving part actually felt more like boring thing, why you felt like that? Cause I will try to rework it somehow.

Also, thanks for pointing out that checkpoint placement. It's so easy to repair and might make game a lot more fun.

There were always going to be people who'd bitch about that. There's no preventing it.

True. Ask CAPCOM - it's tough to target a survival horror game to everyone.
