Apparently my old man used to be a MiG-25 pilot back in the day. I knew he was some "bigshot" in the slav airforce ages ago, but never knew he used to fly those things.
One day got kinda drunk with him and started discussing planes when a show about them was running on discovery channel.

Apparently the main problem with Soviet planes, aside for crude craftsmanship, were poorly trained pilots. The lower you went with the ranks, the worse the training got, only the higher ranked guys had training comparable to a basic western airman.

The MiG-25 also was apparently highly unreliable, little things breaking all the time and pretty much ever single time the plane landed, it had to be looked through with a fine toothed comb for broken components.
Their only saving grace was that they were somewhat simple to maintain and the maintenance crews, when not slacking off, were quite efficient with their assigned planes, knowing them through and through and knowing what was broken just by looking at it (namely everything)

One MiG-29 hit two planes with missiles on one sortie, but the both made it back, (F-111 with an R-60, B-52 with an R-27R)

Seems like the Iraqi's were much better prepared than the Yugoslav MiG-29's. To be fair the Iraqi's had MiG's that were in better condition and probably had more experience. The Yugoslav MiG-29's literally didn't work. Radars and RWR's were completely fucked, no GCI at all unlike the Iraqi's. Yugoslavs had literally no chance.

These are some of the reasons I'm so interested in the Iraqi army, their ground forces got rofled but it wasn't a complete shitstomp in the sky.

I love Russian shit but I will never ever claim that anything the Russians made out side of a few outliers was ever on the US's level.

F-15's and F-16's are superior to the MiG-29 in every single way. It only because semi-even WVR.

Depending on when the shit would have gotten hot, the MiG-29's might have had the advantage WVR with the Shlem/Archer before NATO had any sort of equivalent.

Also worth noting that there would have been a metric fuck load of MiG-29's everywhere. No 2 ships trying to take on 30 aircraft like over Yugoslavia and Iraq.

I'm trying to find the number of aircraft the US had during this time, 1985-90'ish. Curious to see how the numbers stack up. The pure numbers of the Soviets were scary, even though their shit was garbage overall.
