He's more like that one villager in Gaiden who turns out really good no matter what you choose to put him in, and he comes in the first paralogue, far earlier than any Est archetype.

Ests are units who show up far too late at far to low a level to do crap to anything without training the fuck out of them, and while Donnel comes in super weak, he at least has most of the game to try to make use of, rather than the last few chapters like Nino or the actual Est.
