I've got no progress just reposting my witch character because I'm still looking for suggestions as to how to rig and animate the character in 2D. I'm so far only familiar with 3D animation. Spine looks good but slightly cheaper alternatives would be nice.

You start out in 2015 by saying, “Nodev, nodev, nodev.” By 2017 you can’t say “nodev”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, sourceposting, enginedevving, where's your game, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about static typing, and all these things you’re talking about are totally software engineering things and a byproduct of them is, artists are looking for programmers.... “Cool, nevermind, good luck,” is much more abstract than even the OOP thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nodev, nodev.”
>>
>>169340980

Oh, and something else I've heard a bunch is people doing 2d animations in 3d programs. That's going to be a lot harder to import to a 2d-only engine but it's worth checking out I think

dude I feel your pain. Engine dev is SO much fun. If I could earn money engine deving without killing myself at a major company I would do it in a heartbeat. Engine dev at its heart comes down to writing good software, and it's so hard to find any opportunity where you can afford to just take the time to make good software.

So I have this awesome idea for a video game, but I don't have any coding or art skills. Is there anyone here who wants to work on a game that already has a great framework of ideas? We will need 1-2 coders and maybe 1 artist/3d modeller. I might help with some coding because I'm good at math but not much. I'm thinking we will split the profit from the game 50/50, I'll take 50 since this idea is gold and whoever else joins will split the other 50. I think it's a fair deal. Just drop you email and we can get started!

Go, pen and paper role playing games.

Go is fulfilling in itself as a strategy game, it doesn't need to trick people into thinking their exercising their brain, or trick people through visual or auditory stimulation. Pen and paper role playing games
>train social behavior and decorum
>train empathy and role playing
>train improvisation and creativity

Whether you think those skills are valuable for society or the individual is an entirely different matter. The point is that they don't offer ANYTHING inherently in their design or presentation that tricks the player into doing that thing over something of more immediate or more important priority. They're activities that are inherently rewarding because the person is doing them and gains something from doing it.

A good told story involves gameplay.

A good game creates a little, coherent, self explaining and plausible world the player travels in.

Masterbating about pixel perfect colission and my cool animation engine and the JUICE, WE NEED MORE JUICE GOD DAMN IT. WOW THAT JUICY is not better.

/agdg/ need some balance.

You can't make a coherent plausible game when you don't even have the art.

What you charakter does or how he moves does ALSO depend on the charakter concept. You can't part gameplay from the visuals. Yes some people do this, but you actually can't. Not if you want a game where VISUALS and GAMEPLAY match in one MOLD, which is the finaly GAME.

VISUALS and GAMEPLAY is ONE. If you neglect this, it will show in your final product.

This is what divides the mediocre from the good games.

You are right.

I meant this in a game making context.

On it's own this sentence doesn't make sense.

>A good told story in a videogame involves gameplay to tell the story.
>>
>>169347607
>that people still like
>>
>>169347415
You could make a game with no gameplay that tells a story, but making a non-branching VN isn't utilizing the medium to its fullest. At that point you might as well just have a book with some illustrations in it. Games work best when the player feels like they're meaningfully interacting with the game world and for that you need decent gameplay.

>>169347415
You're right, but a video game that lacks captivating gameplay is wasting the medium. It's like if you went to the threatre to see a movie, only to find the entire film was just text projected on the screen. The text could still convey the plot, maybe it'd even be interesting, but there was no point in it being a film instead of a book.

I realize it's unsatisfying for me to make a game and I don't have art and yet don't know how it looks or if it will look nice, and how I want it.

I feel like I need to become an artist first before I make a game.

Idea -> Art or Design -> Code
I think this way it's more satisfying for me.

You first draw it, then you make it come to life.
If you first make it come to life, you never know what exactly is coming to life, and what monsterly creation you breath life into.
So why dev?

>>169348952

>>
>>169348303
Yeah of course, but people remember them most for the gameplay, story and music. For exemple, you can show a bunch of people a screenshot of the game, and the reaction will just by "Oh, that's Chrono Trigger". But if instead you start playing the battle theme, the reaction is more akin to "Hey, that's Chrono Trigger!" Music generally invokes emotions better than visual art can.

>>169348365
Minecraft, Touhou and Undertale are all succesful indie games and none of them have good art. And actually, "being remembered" is pretty good to make money because it's what allows you to create succesful IPs and keep making money off of it for years. Even Chrono Trigger, who wasn't turned into a franchise, still makes money for Square just by being ported to newer consoles and have people buy it again. Meanwhile, nobody will ever buy a port of The Order regardless of how good its graphics are. Since we're indie devs, most of us are working under a tight budget, so my point is it'd be better to prioritize other aspects of the game if you have to make a choice. Art just needs to be "good enough".

You can translate this easily to video games.

In strategy games you learn logical thinking. You need this to build this. You need this to build that.
Also you calculate in your head if your army units are enough against the other army units. They are double as tough. But only half the count.

A game with a good story tells you an interesting moral lesson. Maybe it even makes you cry. Or teaches you something that makes you feel more content as a human being.

Undermeme has stupid looking shit like the player sprite, but it's generally a passable style and the rest of the game is so endearing that it becomes a self-contained meme of its own and transcends conventional gauges of quality. Plus the art in Undertale that wasn't by toby fox was really fucking good, like the turtle merchant which was drawn by some professional artist who blocked me on twitter when I made a joke about her tumblr tier homosexual anthro animal characters kek

Don't let the player do everything and solve every problem, in good interactive stories time is a factor, times always a factor. Doing one thing should mean missing something else. For a game specifically, I think a good story starts from a feeling you want to convey to the audience.

From there you start developing this conventionally, with characters, a few scripts for some moments your game will have,
and worldbuilding (assuming that's an important part of your game). During this, you think about how gameplay is going
to relate this feeling - what the player is doing and how it feeds into the experience of the main character or what the player
represents. If you haven't got a genre or type of game figured out initially, it should come about here.
You think about the gameplay design; the features and focus of your game will become clear, and you can fine tune each bit
to make it enhance the narrative, if that's possible. (Sometimes abstraction between gameplay and narrative is unavoidable).

So after this, your game could be any number of genres and advice gets abstract. Regardless, by now your ideas should be warm and substantial -
the game is like a soup or ball of clay, and all the gameplay elements, story bits, narrative themes, characters, places, and art should be cloudy and ready to form into
a game. This is where you take it all and plan it out from beginning to end. Level by level, maybe jumping around here and there, but I like
to do it linearly. Do it however you want. If your plot is good and everything works together, it'll come together splendidly with a focus -
if it doesn't, time will either improve it or inspire you to make something different.

There will rough spots where it may seem it doesn't work, but maybe you'll be hanging out with friends, eating lunch in the park, or
taking a shower and that one piece, that foil character, event, or mechanic will just spring up at you, like it was there all along.

This is a turbulent cycle, but when it is complete, your narrative will be done, your game will be planned beginning to end, and every bit of the game will complement each
other.

>in good interactive stories time is a factor, times always a factor. Doing one thing should mean missing something else.
It really depends. Persona lets you do whatever you want within reason before the characters get tired, so while time is a factor, it usually doesn't seem overwhelming. Majora's Mask made time an important part of the story, but more of as a puzzle than as a limitation, since you could rewind pretty easily. You can make time work for you in that game, which is cool.

Running your whole game on a clock can be restrictive and decrease the player's ability to explore and have fun, though. Between a game that lets you play through at a leisurely pace, and one that forced a clock on me, I'd always go with the former. I don't think 100% completion should always be a given, but we shouldn't diminish the player's experience just to force choices.
>>
>>169351959
Surely if you make a good game. Sell it for $2.99 or $3.99 and people buy it you can make $40,000 or $20,000 in one year. That type of income is at least enough to room with someone else or room with your parents and not be completely a deadbeat.

That's still roughly 7,000 people buying your product though which is definitely very hard. I don't see being able to make a game that 7,000 people will want to buy and play as a 1MA as your first commercial game without self induced slave labor. You need to be able to dev 12, 13, 16 hours a day for an entire year to produce a worthy game while being aware of your limitations as a 1MA.

Honestly trying to scale above 1MA as an indie dev sounds significantly more dangerous than shooting for the types of profits I mentioned above. Only a small amount of games are even going to reach that type of profitability.

That's a minimum wage -> lower middle class income. But if you're willing to sacrifice you can make it work. I don't personally think you need to take on all the expenses that (((indie devs))) take on when they have the idea of hitting it big.

You don't need to go to PAX.
You don't need to hire a team.
You don't need to rent a studio and buy new computers.

I see ideal indie dev as sitting in the same room every day trying to make a game and not having to worry about anything else in the entire world. The goal should be to build the safe nest income where you can live.

How are you supposed to make anything worthwhile if you aren't being cornered? Fear and getting backed into a corner is valuable. Also if you want game dev to be your life, it can't be a hobby.

A hobby is something you do for leisure, its low priority, other things that are more immediate will always take precedence over it. Any prolific novelist will tell you that writing books is lonely and that you have to sacrifice things like going out with friends, watching tv, and other stuff like that in order to advance their craft and make progress.

If you're willing to sacrifice having kids, getting married, having friends, and various time wasting activities you should be able to become a better gamedev and make more games.
>>
>>169345696

Don't be like that anon. This may sound nice when you're starting, but once you invest 1000+ hours in a project you may look at it differently. The thought of some sort of monetary return for time invested may be necessary to keep you dedicated to getting the work done. not only does VoTS pricing get undercut to make those sales but it's black shell media's stewardship that does it so homph is losing out even more percentages to them to run the price into the ground.
me and homph have discussed cash money and SIT has earned me more money than VoTS has earned him despite all the sales and having been out longer

and cat mouth island has even more owners and even less money.

Just because you only play shit like Gone Home where you use literally no neurons, doesn't mean we all do. In fact I could go out on a limb and say that picking up programming is much easier for someone who has experienced video games than someone who didn't. There's plenty of knowledge and skills acquired in games that translate well to programming, and some of them are outright a lighter form of programming. (Redstone in Minecraft, Spell Sequencer in Baldur's Gate 2, etc.)

Hell, there's few things in life you can do that don't really teach you anything, most of the time people just don't realize what they've learned and don't know how to make use of it.

So I noticed that the way I did this earlier today was not optimal. As in "it breaks incredibly hard when resizing the window or using slightly different values or a non-english locale". Because it was so much fun, I redid all my work. Now it's theoretically infinitely extendible, looks quite nice, and costs a couple hundred unlocked frames because I use a shitload of nodes and rebuild it completely on a changed value instead of building a sensible refresh function. That will come later, but not today.

I already added 8 direction aiming to the machine gunners and now I'm weighing options for the player. This is a fundamentally different game, imo. Good luck finding a good solution for this!

One other thing that might be relevent: the most fun I had was the room 2 or 3 before the end, with two knifeboys and a maze of blocks. The 4-way shooting felt right in that room as I kited them around. The worst rooms were where I was just standing around trading shots.

Everyone has been given the chance to vote out the themes which make them the most butthurt. Current selection of themes are themes about which many people weren't that butthurt and didn't vote out.

>all I'm doing are menus

I'm pretty determined to do as much of the game as possible using minimal assets so I can make sure the game itself is good and fun. Afterwords I can work on polish and systems to display that polish. I mean I'm always keeping in mind that I'm 1MA so I have it in my head what I'd like to do as far as polish goes. But there are two massive "theoretical" benefits to doing it like this that I could be horribly wrong about.
>The game will be good and the polish will only make it better.
>It keeps development focused. If you don't have any art assets you can't distract yourself with adding effects and juice enginedeving and not actually making gameplay.

It seems like it should help keep shit super simple. Right now I'm doing conceptual character screen stuff so I can display and alter character properties in game.

I'm making a sort of "test character sheet" screen.
>display all stats and properties (think health, mana, tabletop character sheet statblock)
>helper method buttons like reseting HP, leveling up, etc.

Its kind of still "enginedeving" but its hopefully just a good way to speed testing and work on getting better gameplay which I don't fully know what the gameplay is going to be yet.

So could have you. Why didn't you? Also, I would like to see a progress post on the entry for the "allegedly decided" jam.

>instead of making this weirdass reverse poll that lasts for weeks no one asked for and the result would be the same.
Results will not be the same. My poll showed that people disliked Cops, Pirates and Loli themes so much that those three didn't make past the first round. Which goes to show that the only reason Pirates and Cops got so much votes in the first place, was to have a jam about anything but Loli. Also, the memeing and insolence of the loliposters didn't win their theme any favors. Besides, over the last year, it has been a growing trend to shit up Jam polls.

Thus, something had to change.

It has worked decently so far.

Although, I did consider hosting a poll site on my server, where every voter would need to make a user by using their Tumblr or itch.io account as authentication. Then those users would go through voting privilege assesment - where they have to show me their latest progress post or smth like that. But I realized that it would require a good amount of work. So, I opted for smth easier instead.

Question for you guys. Should I kill the black shadows around the screen or should I just make them a bit smaller. The lit area does gently grow a hair and than sink back randomly like it's a lantern doing it. Along those lines should I make the lit area darker instead of bright?

Basically the game takes place at night where you are killing ghosts and demons, but I don't want a constant drab and dark atmosphere of greys and blues.

If you want my honest opinion agdg has reached far beyond the tipping point when it comes to cancerous nodevs who are just here 24/7 shitposting and trying to disrupt even trivial things like jams.

Cops won the fucking poll. We all know it did. This 2 weeks of ongoing shitposting and other polls has all been retarded.

AGDG is a fucking lost cause if this kind of retardation can't be properly handled even after 2 weeks. Worst general. Worst site for game dev.

Like the last year has shown, the polls show a particular voting behavior.

There is always one top "scandalous" option which got on the top through the combination of people who want that jam and people who just want to be edgy and who just want to trigger ''''normies''''. I think that people agree that a jam theme should win based on its "goodness" and not due to its meme value.

Then the runner ups are usually the options which got large amount of votes early on for some reason. Then people who come to vote later, see that the "scandalous" option is being memed to heaven and back and thus give their votes to runner ups just for the sake of not letting the "scandalous" option win.

And in the next rounds, the same top options(perhaps the runners up would change) would dominate with exactly the same amount of memeing and sperging. And in the end we end up with the "scandalous" option or the runner up of the last round which got there simply because anything was better than the "scandalous" option.

Thus, with "voting for" automatically turning into a "pseudo voting against" system, we should just use "vote against" system from the start. It is much harder to scam (because shitposters would have to put much more work in it and shitposters, by nature, want to avoid as much work as possible) and the actual sentiment about the options is much clearer, since the themes get less votes simply because they could beat another option.

I'm retarded. It took me way longer to do that grid than it should have, I actually had to look up tilemaps. It also occurs to me that this was largely non-practical and I just wanted to test out the thing I made.

This should have taken like 8 mins and it instead took an hour and 20 minutes. RIP. tfw the end result is you just going "alright I know that now" and then deleting the code.

Also maybe seizure warning idk, flashing squares.

Because you're increasing the value that you rotate by every frame
Transform.rotate doesn't set the rotation, it ADDS to the current rotation
so when you're both increasing the value of currentX and adding that amount to the current rotation, you get the acceleration thing

Also don't call it currentX when it's your Y rotation axis. Call it either y or yaw

I would consider making them a bit weaker usually but make them stronger during enemy attacks or something. Use them to accentuate the combat. Thanks for the warning but I feel that 8 direction is plenty in this game. Its not because I am unable to work, but rather because I also have a long term project that requires my attention outside work. The days that I work, can be full-time, no problem. >Where do you live where that's ok?
I live in Estonia, in European Union.

It really is not an "ok" option. Its just an "unorthodox" thing. People are used to the usual way where one works every day full-time and just can't think that any other way can be a "thing". But in reality it doesn't really matter.

If you can explain yourself confidently and not look like a faggot while doing that, normal (non-idiot and reasonable) people will understand that there really is nothing wrong with that proposition.

But, indeed, it depends entirely on the kind of work you apply to. You can negotiate that at a work where you assemble furniture or do some other line-work. But if it is the kind of work that, by its nature, requires constant presence, then, of course, you cannot do this.

>>169380060
Have you asked yourself, why? Normal people don't really have anything that requires them to not work the whole week. Why would normal people ask for such a schedule?

>>169380106
>That is not how the world works at all.
Indeed, the world does not work like that for spineless fags.

Besides, what helps me, is probably that I don't shy away from hard work that others would puss out on. Those workplaces are usually desperate enough to have no choice but to entertain a notion that is this outrageous.

------------------------------------

Just like, have some balls. If the potential employer goes on a sperging spree as a result of such a thing, then its pretty clear that you don't really want to work for a cunt like that.

Holy shit how did I not know of this game.

I think a lot of it could be done with simple keyframes and procedural animation logic. Something similar to what Wolfire did for Overgrowth.

Been dreaming about making a classicvania clone for a while. I've got no experience with programming or game development, but I've been messing around with 8-bit sprites and watching game maker tutorials, seems like a relatively easy place to start.
>>
>>169386763
don't draw a single sprite until you make the base of the game.
If you know nothing about programing or game dev, but you are trying to make a metroid game, you will fail. And it won't be a blaze of glory, but things will get so complex with respect to what you know that you will close Game Maker and never return to your game in a matter of days. You need to complete, and i mean complete, several small projects before you can even conceptualize what the base of your vania game will be like. You're making a classic mistake by showing off some sprites and thinking your on the right track. Do i need to tell everyone in this tread to make a pong clone first? Because if you can't make a fun pong clone, how do you expect to do anything more?
>>
>>169386729
For a true rougelike there is a very specific engine to use. Every programming language should have one. Here are a few:

>C++ - Command Prompt
>C# - Console
>Python - Shell

you sperged out just a bit too much
>>
>>169387035
That's why I've been doing tutorials, which so far has included making a simple little space invaders-type thing.
As for the sprite in progress, I just want to get a few of the important sprites out of the way early on, because I think it'll help me get a good idea of the scale and geometry I'm working with when it comes to realizing the nitty gritty details of the base game.

A question on physics objects (particularly in UE4 but perhaps unity fags would know too)

I have a flying pawn that has two thrusters placed in mirroring locations on the back end

now, of course I had to adjust their angle a bit so that the craft wouldn't pitch around with no control input

however, you would think that if they were placed perfectly opposed to eachother, there would be no yaw or roll added to the craft when they are positioned neutrally

however... there is. is this just an effect of the imperfect physics calculations (we're dealing with huge amounts of force but that noticeably add yaw and roll over the course of a few seconds) or is there some other issue?

(p.s. the model itself is actually asymmetrical [placeholder], but this shouldn't matter, right? its collision model and center of mass are still centered on the left/right axis).
>>
>>169394035
If you want no torque at all, a line between the two thrusters should pass through the center of mass if you look from a plane normal to the thrust.

Pic of the pawn and thruster and CoM?
>>

I recommend reading some books. I'll note which of these I've actually read with an X (I realized the story thing would be years in the future so I stopped reading these for now and just let the story cook in my mind).

The ones I've read I know are very, very good, and I expect all of them to be

[x] Novelist's Essential Guide to Creating Plot by J. Madison Davis
[x] Character & Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card
[ ] Conflict, Action & Suspense by William Noble
[ ] Notes to Screenwriters by Vicki Peterson and Barbara Nicolosi (this one was actually a gift so perhaps look into it a bit closer)
[ ] The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell
[ ] The Language of Names by Justin Kaplan and Anna Bernays
[ ] Our Marvelous Native Tongue, The Life and Times of the English Language by Robert Claiborne

Two others which are probably just solid anthologies (perhaps not as generally relevant)
[ ] Mythology, Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes by Edith Hamilton
[ ] Dictionary of Phrase & Fable, The Quintessential Guide to Myth, Folklore, Legend and Literature (Wordsworth Reference Series)

The Orson Scott Card and William Noble books are part of a series, look for the other ones in that series. But particularly the two that I've read are absolutely fantastic. They will take you from zero to hero (and who'd've thought?). Take notes and highlight for reference. Joseph Campbell is a well known master of the subject and THwaTF is probably his definitive work from what I can tell.

>>169394435
I'd rather avoid posting pics, first because I'm being very secretive and second because my dev machine isn't connected to the internet for productivity reasons. The center of mass is well forward of the thrusters, and it is above them, so I expected to need to adjust so that pitch wasn't added... but it is centered between them, so why would it yaw? I can't even fathom how roll would be added when they're both neutral.
>>
Not entirely happy with my experimenting with lifebar GUI so far. I'll just finish making GUI for the settings screen and move on.

I'm 30 and I want to kick people with your attitude in the teeth.
- At 30 you have enough freedom (both physical and financial) to do whatever the fuck you want
- At 30 people pay attention to what you have to say and don't dismiss you for being too young or too old
- At 30 you still have insane amounts of time to pursue any business or creative endeavors you want
- At 30 you can party just as hard as when you were 20 and you can manage the next day just fine.
- At 30 you get laid way more often than at 20 (yes, even if you got laid a lot when you were 20).
- At 30 you can start having a family if you want to, but there's no problem if you don't and nobody except your grandma will be disappointed.

tl;dr: FUCK YOU BOTH

Now get back to gamedev.
>>
>>169353852
This has to be the most satisfying landmark for a games success.
>>
>>169396110
What forces are you simulating? If the only forces involved are from the thrusters, having their thrust axis pass above or below the CoM will cause torque anyway. You'll need a counteracting thruster or force of sorts.

That's for pitch. The way I see it I don't see where yaw and roll would come from. Maybe the craft is just generally unstable due to the off-center thrust.
