I've been in one clan for well over a year now, pretty much no one comes online except me, but the tag is kind of nice, makes me at least look like not a complete shitter.

It depends on the clan.

Some clans offer no benefits, but if you are good enough you can get into better clans where they offer XP and Credit boosts daily, as well as Tier 6 and 8 Strongholds daily. Clans also let you easily find platoon mates as well as tourney teams. If you join a good clan you can also do CW where you can earn a reward tank.

But between an entitled community (muh AFV can't pen MBTs from the front! nerf nerf nerf!) and shady russian business it seems that its death for real now, the famous "balance 2.0" was just an attempt made by an ex-Wargaming dev to make AW JUST like WoT, everything is fucked up beyond recognition on the PTS

It sucks big time. The game is dead in NA, and has been for a long while. In EU it's getting to the same place NA was around this time last year.
With that said, I honestly think the core game (when it's not buggy as fuck) is better than WoT for so many reasons. I honestly tried going back to WoT for a while after and it just couldn't compare.
Still it has to be said, the balance problems in AW are just as pronounced and the new patch might actually make things worse, even though it's supposed to fix power creep.

Shit no-one ever asked for. What did piss a lot of players off was that MBT side armour was way too strong so flanking in AFVs was a huge pain.

Neither of those are true MBT? Sure the STB-1 and Centurion heavily resemble a MBT, so does the M48A1 Patton, but that tank is a heavy tank. WoT actually has a MBT, the M60. Maybe for the first second, but the general consensus post war was that anti armour weaponry was above and beyond what armour could handle. That's why pretty much every post war tank has ~60mm-100mm of armour at the front. Speed had a greater value than armour until the introduction of ceramic armour which was a British invention.
