Bought my fianceé a N3DS + Gen yesterday. Wish it was 4U, but they didn't have it at the store.

That's how I got into the series with 4U. I also got 3U as a gift from a relative literally a couple of weeks later.

Anyone have a good resource for learning CB that isn't intimidating as fuck? I don't have 4U with me, so it'll be Gen. It just seems so complicated.

There's GH's video, it'll familiarise you with the basics but his gen tutorial videos aren't fantastic, they're mostly just showcases of what styles change.

The best way to learn CB is to just suck it up and use it for a while after learning those basics in my opinion, if you run into a problem (can't cancel SAED into AED, can't figure out how to get red shield up, can't gp, etc) you can always ask here for advice and get it on a specific subject.

I never looked at it in 3U, has esurient always been top tier? I remember in 4U it was like sharpness+1, razor sharp, AUXL and speed eating+2, aka everything you could need for most weapons short of HGE/evasion, while looking /fa/ as fuck. Obviously mixed sets could do better with HB and C+2 but it was probably the best general-use fullset in the game.

3U had the only useful healing system, but it took two players to set it up. Melodies Extended would reset Health Boost L for infinite Lifepowders.

Until that shit is possible again (never), just use regular Lifepowders.

what's your decoration layout (as in what's on the torso), I'm seeing you coming up one slot short with what I'm trying (crit draw 2 on the torso), and either way actuall proccing crit boost would give you attack down since it's done entirely with decorations

in fact ACTUAL fullset esurient r works but has attack down s, which is why it wasn't showing up in ASS for me

come to think of it what's the point of torso up with fullset esurient r in the first place, since every piece EXCEPT the torso has 3x slots and 2 handicraft and the torso has 2x slots and 2 handicraft you're literally just making your headpiece worth one less slot

You can. It's literally better than torso up, it affords the same skills from armour (+2 handicraft) and one more slot (3 compared to 2 from doubling the torso). The only times torso up would be better would be for very marginal elemental resistance and to conserve materials on decorations.

I never understood why people think like this. Gen has a lot of fun, new content. Playing Gen will give you a headstart on a transferable save when Gen Ultimate eventually comes around.

Even though it's pretty much certain, Gen Ultimate still hasn't been announced and we won't see it until September at the earliest. XX may be out next month but the west still has 7 months to go at the very least.

There's nothing wrong with that. I fall back on LS whenever I fight something more challenging, but I try to use stuff like Hammer, GS, and GL for monsters I'm familiar with.

Guild and striker are way more fun for SnS. The general rule is guild for online because you get the poise backhop, and striker for offline. Otherwise you pick style based on the monster and weapons you're matched with.

But since it's your first title and also since it's Gen I HIGHLY recommend you check out LS (I'd probably say GS or LS for 4U, since LS was a little clunkier in how it functioned and GS was pretty strong). It's a good introduction into the other weapons without being too hard to learn, and while it takes a lot to actually master it's still less than most weapons. Plus it's extremely satisfying to use in gen imo. Guild is the preferred LS style afaik but I also enjoy adept for a lot of hunts (not the majority, but a lot). All of LS's styles are good, though, which is another reason it's a good intro weapon to use if you're starting with gen.

(SnS is often, even in the games, presented as a beginner weapon, but it is not the easiest weapon to use, the strongest weapon, the weakest weapon, the most basic weapon or the weapon with the most broadly applicable playstyle; IMO at least those are GS, lance, gunlance, also GS and LS, respectively, at least in Gen.)

Yeah, it doesn't work with striker which is one of the big reasons striker is probably the worst LS style. It's nice to have readiness, juncture and sakura all at the same time, and charging faster, and IIRC every striker style has a decent % MV multiplier, but it loses one of the core ways it gets to red and chains combos once in red.

I don't get why they didn't rejig the Konchu bowling move to its LR moveset, it's clearly not threatening enough to be G-only worthy but still varies its moveset in interesting ways. Then in XX they could have added a G-rank move that built on that.

This should in fact be a staple of the series to keep monsters up to speed with the ever expanding options of hunters, but it's quite nearly never done. The one instance I recall they did this is with giving Lagombi its 3U G-rank-only snowball as a standard kit move.

FU was my first game and I stubbornly picked HBG as my main weapon. The upkeep was rough and the damage I took was outrageous.

But then I got to G-rank, and I got the ULSC with Autoreload. Never again did I feel quite as powerful with a weapon as back in the day. I felt like a god.

It might just be because I was already used to LS in 3U and 4U but adept feels good but a little off to me in most hunts. In some hunts, especially glavenus (which gets reamed by any adept style, honestly), it feels really natural though. The main issue is that your only methods to level up your gauge are adept counters (which rely on the monster standing still for a couple of seconds after you dodge an attack) and sakura slash (assuming that's the art you choose, for this reason and the fact that it's pretty good burst damage it's usually what I go with using adept).

idk maybe I shouldn't offer myself as a basis of comparison since I played around 1600 hours between 3U and 4U before picking up gen, and most of the more informative posters here probably have even more time in the series, but I made a point of soloing all of the shit I did before doing it online this time until I got to the point that everything I did was just to grind for endgame sets and didn't really run into any hangups.

Of course I also got sensitive about memes about carried shitters and soloed everything in G rank up to postgame content in 4U, and I only had around 150 hours in the series at the time (by far most of my time is in 4U, though I've played more 3U since then too).

But the biggest thing I learned from doing that and going back to MP after was that soloing everything doesn't actually give you big brass balls, you can git gud again at any time by soloing for a while, going online for a while will make you a little more relaxed and less-good pretty much no matter what, and online and offline have their own unique kinds of challenges (monsters are much more predictable offline, so there IS a tradeoff even in difficulty). As long as you're competent and aren't a burden to your team, don't worry about not being able to set TA records solo because you play online a lot or something.
