The enemies, not your units, you can have the other three be level 40 while the one is low level

If you leave it on auto battle though, expect the AI to place the unit you're trying to level in the perfect position to get one shotted and killed

Auto battle is pretty much just for doing maps that are like 10+ levels below you where there's literally zero chance of losing
