Hence why Ryoma would be fucking INSANE if he had variable range to allow him to attack from a distance AND up close (which'd mean be could initiate almost every character currently in game for fucking free, 1 range against mage/archer and 2 range against sword/axe/lance)

Start with BR since that one is easier, CQ is way harder. Have you played other FE games?

Birthright is best if you aren't too familiar with FE, it's easier, and its' story is much less aggravating. Solid all around, you'll probably be satisfied.
Conquest is much, much tougher, both in gameplay and in how hard it works your nerves with its' story. Play this if you feel like jumping right into a 'real' FE, it pulls no punches and you'll feel very rewarded for beating certain maps.

Source just told me, because of the short nature of the game (even with the new added content), Echoes will have an option to enable a weapon triangle and more traditional weapons.
