There's really no best digimon, it just depends on whether or not you use items and which moves they got.
Moves you can rapidfire through orders like Mach jab or Thunderstorm are OP as fuck.
If you don't use items, attack moves that give buffs are amazing too.

With the Heaven's Blessing trainer perk allowing all of my Baby 2 Digimon to meet the prereqs for all of their Rookie forms, is their way I can lean towards a specific path?

It doesn't seem to be RNG. It actually seems to be egg-based. Like once you get the egg, it's just going to keep digivolving to the same thing. I quit my game 7 times, did different things every time and always got SnowAgumon. Then forced a death, saved on Baby 1, and it still kept only going to Renamon.

Im having so much fun is amazing this game even exists, a shame is not getting much buzz but Im thankful they made a follow up to DW1 at all

I don't like talking shit about recolors since they're not just recolors but digimon on their own, however it's true that in this game they're dealt with as if they were, the game itself use them as "gain cash" for the friendly ones.
It's true that it's lacking digimon that aren't "big guy" from the franchise, Digimon World did have it's own ecosystem that gave life to it, also you couldn't get a lot of digimon in the first game and i think it gave the game a better athmosphere, the game was bigger than you could handle, if they did not make all of the digimon as obtainable some of us would have cried "They're in the game, why not including them as evolution?" but it do give some environnement more appeal.

That was a hypothetical, I doubt its possible to get a baby with max stats. But, it's very much possible to get one with adult/champion stats or even perfect/ultimate.

So I'm assuming I'm going about training all wrong. I'm still early game (supposed to go to Logic Volcano for the first time), but both of my digimon died of old age. So I just basically training hall'd them back up to champion and am wondering if I should keep doing this until they die again for extra stat boosts.

It feels like there's such a difficulty spike, level three and below enemies are super easy and offer very little stat boosts after battle, but then the level 6-8 enemies (rookies at that!) are really hard to beat to the point where I have to use up too many healing items.

What the dick am I doing wrong?

Just gather, recruit, and battle early on, because battling gives more stats, and you need tamer points to get the good skills (rebirth, more stats from battle, defend order etc..).
