Going from the Ocarina style to the Wind Waker style to the Twilight Princess style was such a good move from Nintendo, the variety was so visually pleasing. Majora's Mask IS overrated, in my book. Thematically, it is one of the most interesting Zelda games, but the game's method of sidequests that you would have no idea exist unless you had a guide is a huge flaw. You simply can't be at all locations at all possible times so that you can be in a short time window for the event to occur. That wouldn't be a huge deal normally, but the game has a huge focus on these sidequests, as the actual main story is rather short.

I've played on every 3DS variant but the 2DS, and I have to say the N3DS XL is far above the rest of the bunch. It makes the original 3DS feel like a grubby child's toy, and improves on the original XL in most regards as well, like button placement. The stable 3D is nice, though most people probably won't use it. The increased processing power is also noticeable. It loads faster than the original models, and suffers from fewer framerate drops in graphically intense gameplay. That said, the "exclusives" lineup isn't worthwhile if you already have a 3DS. I'd recommend it for sure if you don't have a 3DS yet and want to explore its games library, which is quite substantial.

That's what I've been thinking, I think it does look worth it to invest into a N3DSXL is I plan on playing it for the years to come.

Right now I'm looking into whether hacking a 3DS is easy or not and if it's a risky procedure or not. I own a DS but never bought a single game for it, played everything through the SD card hack thing. Surely the same thing is possible on a 3DS, shouldn't be rocket science.

I think there's a general specifically for 3DS homebrew and hacking. As far as I can tell, they've got the procedure down perfectly, but it also sounds like if you mess up, it can brick the system. It's not something I'd do myself, but if you're willing, it's supposedly easy.

Bomber's Notebook helps you discover most time related sidequests and there's only a few that are truly obnoxious imo. But to be fair to you, I think it's reasonable to say the game was designed with the philosophy that kids were willing to investigate everything that might lead to a reward, and that they wouldn't mind repeating tasks if they did them at the wrong time. That kind of design is not for everybody.

I can corroborate on the length. I played through TP HD with my SO and it took ages, despite the fact that my SO had beaten it four times prior and had most of it memorized. That wasn't a 100% run either.

It was fun, though. Great atmosphere and music, even if the plot is thin and the graphics have aged like a slice of pizza forgot beneath a bachelor's bed. Savoring the journey sounds like the perfect way to enjoy it.

Did I fuck up by buying a used unboxed version of HWL?

I had the WiiU version but it's kept in storage back at my parents' house along with my WiiU so I thought getting the 3DS version for cheap was a good idea. Except now I'm realizing that the codes to get the Legends exclusive characters came in the box?

Honestly? I think anon's screenshots from the GC version look less jarring than TP HD. The Wii U's resolution makes the textures look nicer, but highlights how primitive the models are. It's like those godawful Minecraft HD texture packs with realistic textures and lighting, etc., but the same chunky geometries—not a pleasant mixture.

Not at all, I've seen multiple posts across the internet regarding the visuals. In the end, it's a matter of personal preference. I think the best possible solution would have been to copy the Halo remasters that let you swap between the old and new visuals. But the Wii U just couldn't handle that if you were to ask me.

I have the gamecube versions of both and I've never felt the need to upgrade primarily because I've already played them to death and HD can only do so much to freshen up the experience. Besides, I feel the big flaws of those games were on a more fundamental level and can't be fixed with a swift sail or shorter bug hunts. Some of the fixes I even think were clumsily applied or introduced new problems.

My issues aren't particularly thrilling because I know I'm not the only one who has these complaints, but since you asked:

Wind Waker feels like too much content was cut. Whenever I get to Great Fish Isle it always feels like a part of the game is just missing, which I find is only enhanced by the story explanation that the place got destroyed. The Earth and Wind Temples slow to a crawl because of the Command Melody, when the ability to switch control to Medli or Makar really should have been a single button press. There's too many islands with near identical content, like all the reefs and fairy islands, and I would've preferred more locations like Fire Mountain and Ice Ring Island. The Triforce quest is obviously there as filler due to a lack of dungeons, and aside from the more interesting parts of it like the Ghost Ship, should not have been there to begin with. I'm glad the swift sail is in the game for people who want it I guess, but getting places quicker doesn't negate the fact that the late game content is boring.

Twilight Princess' main gimmick just isn't any fun. Much like Deku Link, transforming into Wolf Link is framed as a negative state from the start, and each time you're forced back into this form you lose most of your abilities and have an unfun task to complete (the tears of light) before you can go back to being human. You can choose to transform at will later, but it still remains the inferior form and I never found myself wanting to play as Wolf Link, save for when it was required (contrast this with Goron and Zora Link). Horseback combat was introduced in this game, but the fights are pretty lame and you can't call Epona to you from just anywhere so you'll probably just warp instead of spending any time traveling through Hyrule Field. Much of Link's equipment seems cool when you get it but becomes obsolete because of a new item you get later, or you'll find little reason to use something ever again (RIP Spinner). Also, the game is just overall too easy and boss fights that could've been cool are very straight forward and unsatisfying.

Examples of small changes that created new problems: Tingle not charging for the maps in the Wind Waker meant that having large amounts of money was useless outside of the auction house (and money being worthless also meant that treasure hunting for rupees was worthless, and so were all the maps you could acquire that led you to that treasure). In Twilight Princess, the addition of stamps didn't help small treasure chests feel more rewarding to open to most people, since most people don't use Miiverse.

While I agree, if they are going to make the Downfall timeline canon, this is the only way everyone will be satisfied. But it will never happen. Having a third timeline at all is too fan-ficy no matter how you spin it. I mean, what's the point? If you're going to make a new game that incorporates what many already see as a forced deus ex machina to account for your 2D games, why even do it at all? Might as well just work them into the back end of one of the existing timelines right? They already called post-WW kingdom "Hyrule." Just pull the damn trigger Nintendo. Seriously.

First of all, keep in mind the reply is to a post starting with "Bullshit theory time."

Second, the point is to explain the birth of Ganon/Demise's wrath's incarnation as something that preceeds the Gerudo man. I mean, "The history of the Calamity Ganon is the history of the Royal Family" kinda hints that both have been around for just as long, while that's just not true about Ganondorf. And from the glance I saw the man fighting the Calamity Ganon on the back of the map looked like Ganondorf to me. I'm not trying to convince you, just explaining the basis of my logic.


And I've thought for a while now that all the 2D games are their own separate universe/timeline. I mean, the Minish cap and Four Swords games all seem like a perfect backstory for the birth of Ganon and potentially soon to be the Master Sword.

I'm not sure how easy it is to use homebrew to get Four Swords Anniversary edition onto the 3DS, but it's incredibly easy to set up Nintendon't on a Wii U's vWii and play Four Swords Adventures. Not sure if you guys wanted to add that to the bottom of the OP.
