Let's say that actually was the case and not the fact that they actually bothered advertising the game. Awakening had no shitty waifu-related minigame and that was the game that "saved the series". Not Fates.

Fates actually didn't sell as well as it could have. They split the game into three routes and it didn't sell three times, or even twice that of Awakening. It was also generally less well-received overall, especially when it came to the writing and characterization.

I was talking more about Fates, which was a huge step up from Awakening and even some of the older games in terms of map design. It's also the most mechanically fleshed out, I think shuriken debuffs were an interesting idea that could be explored and balanced more, the revamped weapon triangle was much better. Every weapon having unique properties and pros and cons was much more interesting than weapons before. And while the story failed, it's clear that it was an attempt to experiment with more involved and in-depth storytelling, which is something I would really like to see in FE if they could pull it off well. I also thought the attack/defense stance was pretty good, definitely way better than Pair Up in Awakening, and I think if they tweaked it more it could make map strategy and positioning a lot more interesting.

I can agree that Awakening doesn't really have many redeeming qualities, but it triggers me when people throw out and ignore all those things in Fates and say it's bad just because of the waifu shit. A lot of them probably haven't even played it, they just know it from reputation as "that shitty anime waifu shit that's just Awakening 2.0".

Fates did a lot of good stuff and pushed a lot of things in the right direction that were lacking in Awakening. It's also clear that they are experimenting and pushing the envelope more, something that FE has really needed as I think it's been one of the most mechanically stagnant series for a long time.
