The arm-crutch reason is because of the fact that its pretty much a "normie VN" and caters to morons who never got into the genre in the first place, because big streamers/youtubers got in on it because it was one of the first notable VNs on steam.
More defined and better reasons is because Nekopara for all intents and purposes, is a very flimsy moege. Even Koirizo has more depth to it than Nekopara. The conflict is petty and serves very little purpose other than a faint attempt at deriving some sort of emotion.
The artwork is immensely stellar, Sayori is by far,though one could say her artwork leaves a bit to be desired in its scope (she doesn't change much or have a specific trait to her works like karory),extremely high quality and detailed. She captures "moe" very well with her style. The problem though is that her artwork, at least to me, garners the same inherent reaction that asanagi's does, and that is that virtually every single character will garner some sort of sexual reaction. Her work on many nukiges beforehand, and notably Smile's Koikuma, gives it even more if you're familiar with her work.
From this they attempted to market, even while there is fanservice (which in comparison to most anime, outside of DXD, fanservice is the blood and bones of many VNs) the VN as all-ages when there are many damn factors that it isn't. Even some of the streamers/YTs had similar opinions.
I don't dislike nekopara, but for folks here who expect a lot more in a VN it doesn't deserve the sheer amount of support it has gotten off of its base value outside of the immense amount of moe it has.

Either they have credible and up-to-date market research done somewhere which indicates that making jap things "commonly understandable" to the west maximises their profits in the short term, since few companies nowadays think too much ahead of quarterly gains, or they hang on to an old and common misconseption that anything even the slightest bit alien in culture will drive away potential customers.

Eve Burst Error from 1995 had dual protagonists with scenes that eventually link the two characters together. That's really fucking neat.
Innocent Grey made some shitty attempts but their games had way too many bad endings and the time spent on those should have been spent to make the main scenario less shitty. Not to mention the random h-scenes used have with girls that were huge red flags.
Myth is a doujinshi game that runs on Renpy/Nscripter but the scenario writer made due with the shitty limitations and made a scenario that wouldn't really work in any other format. Even little character relation charts and notes go a long way.

I think it does. There is nothing wrong with it having the popularity that it does because while it started out as a meme it built up a solid fanbase.
Even if its as shallow as a spoon, I think its awesome that an indie studio who started out with nothing now has a chance to do something great. vol 1 was plain, but we're seeing improvement in their later releases even though the titles are still short.
In the end it does one thing and that is fill the readers hearts and minds with fluffy cuteness porn aside. For that alone, it deserves every bit of attention its gotten.

They probably thought it sounded fine simply because the guy who made the music was Abo Takeshi, who has a nice portfolio. He did the music for Remember11, which is some of the most fitting and genuinely good music in a VN.
